Editor Charlotte Observer I have just returned from Yadkin county, where-1 have been a witness to and participant in the operations of Collector Mptt'a force of special depu ties, in charge of Captain Abram Bry an, against illicit distillers. And I must ear that it is not possible tor any set of . men to execute the laws, under the existingcircumstances, .more, efltt ciently ot arnanely than? they did. We found in a section of the county, about 16 miles long and 8 wide, 39 houses which had been used for illicit distilline. and with a few exceptions their contents had been captured ana destroyed twice, and some even three times before. Fifteen of these we touna either to be in full blast, or very re cently in operation. ;The distiller, trusting more to nis heels than his arms, fled instanter, leaving the work of demolition to go on without his as sistance. Although we found it almost impossible to get anyone in that sec- tipn to give us any lniorrnauon con cerning them, I am loth to believe that their operations meet tne approbation of the entire community. "No book of the library will be al lowed to be taken out, except by spe cial permission of the clerk, for use be fore some court in session, or referee, and the North Carolina reports, digests, and statutes will not be allowed to be withdrawn at all." Though the first district is assigned the first week, yet appeals therefrom will not be called until Wednesday of that week, as Monday and Tuesday will be devoted to the examination of ap plicants for license to practice law. The assembling and organization . of this court, as at present constituted, will mark a new and long and earnest ly looked for era in our State history. Composed, as it is, of jurists of emi nent ability and gentlemen of exalted personal character, it will not disap point the high expectations of the pro fession and of the people. Elected without opposition, and thus placed beyond the reach of partisan bias, it has before it a career of great useful; nees one that will redound to ttfe honor alike .of the judiciary and the State. IMPRISONED HIS OWN TOMB. The Late William Niblo's Accidental Night in Greenwood Cemetery. New York Mercury. About fifteen years ago the late William Niblo, of Niblo's Garden, built a handsome tomb in Greenwood Ceme tery. He expended a great deal of money upon it, and it naturally be came one of the attractions of that pensive resort. Among the eccentrici ties of the veteran manager was that of visiting this tomb on sultry summer afternoons, and sitting there, novel in hand, until the shadowing of the grand path before the door showed him that evening was near. One day Mr Niblo passed through the lodge gate as usual, saluted the attendant in his customary courtly style, and wandered away. JThat night Mr Niblo did not return to his home in this city. Nothing was thought of it as he had such a number of friends whom he might visit and re main until late, but when the morn ing showed the room unoccupied and the bed Undisturbed, then alarm seiz ed the household. Search was made : the clubs, the places of public resort, the theatres all were visited. He had not been there the night previous. Then one remembered the visits to the Greenwood tomb. When those who were searching for William Miblo reached the gate of the cemetery they were met by the man in charge. He remembered that Niblo had been there so many days before that it had become a s custom. What was the matter? Mr Niblo lost? "Come to think of it. I didn't see him go out of here when I locked up. He must be in the tomb." The tomb has an ornamental door let into the solid rock surroundings. It is massive, thick, uninviting and seems iust the aperture for a perpetual home of the dead. Beyond it is an airy apartment, in which the sunlight filters. When Mr William Niblo en tered his favorite resting place that summer afternoon so long ago, he sat in his accustomed seat, opened his book and fell to reading. The wind rose, the vault was filled with air until a propulsive force was generated, and then suddenly there came a short, sharp click, with semi-darkness after it. Mr Niblo was shut in. The vault door had sprung to. He was found sitting composed in the tomb, and by no means so much aeitated as was any one of those who were looking for him. He explained the accident, his shrieks for assistance, arid then the relapse into a calm and philosophical consideration of the circumstances. He knew that no one could hear him call, but he felt that the active brains of his friends would seek him out, and that sooner or later he would be liberated. The most prolific variety of iWinter.
