Editor Charlotte Observer : The difficulties in this district were, m a. great measure, solved at Mocks villeon Wednesday last, where and when J M Browert Senator-elect from Surry, declared himself a candidate for Congress, against Col Armfield. Brow- er is a pronounced Radical,'.and this, 1 presume, ends Capt Crawford's candi dacy as be is too good a Democrat to divide the party in the face of Radical opposition. And now, if Col Armfield witt silence his injudicious friends, notably .your correspondent "Civis," the party will unite pretty solidly on him. ' A strange feature brought to light to day by the comparative statistics of convalescent and fatal cases, was the fact that the mortality among the negroes attacked is nearly 60 percent.; so fatal indeed is the disease, that when a full blooded negro is seized he abandons hope at once. In illustration of the extreme nervous prostration during the stage of conyalescence, a young lady on St Charles street, who was already able to move about the house and was considered totally out of danger, was severely frightened by a vivid flash of lightning this afternoon, relapsed into fever within an hour, and died with the black vomit this evening; at 9 o'clock. Years and years ago there lived in Wadesboro, Doctor P. : an amiable and good , man, zealously devoted to his profession, in the practice of which he was skillful and experienced, : One day aV messenger came for kim, in hot haste, to visit a man living a few miles from town, who had been bitten1 by a rattlesnake. Ever prompt and ready, (and some physicians of the present day inight learn a profitable Jesson from him in this respect,) the good old doctor mounted his horse and -went at full speed leaving the m essenger far behind ; because that was f'hw way,", and because he knew that the life or death of the bitten m an might de pend on'a moment's time. The suffer er did not live directly on the "public road : apd to reuch his house, in the ordinary way, it was necessary to pass around a large field of his) which lay between hid house and the road. Te-aoid-this extra half mile of travel; Dr P On reaching a point 1 opposite to and only a short distance from the, residence: dismounted, dashed down the;v fence sped like , a thupderbolt aoroes the field of cqrnr-rushetf to the bedside of the desperately suffering and almost dying manwent heroically to work and.hy his 'skill and attention saved the I patient's ; . life rescued him from the very brink of the grave, and went home rejoicing at his success in an emergency eb critical, i ' But' '' some cattle got in the field where he did and destroyed a few stalks of corn : and the rich man. whose life he had saved indicted him for trespass or sued him for damages because he the doctor -left thefence down! If anybody doubts ' this' the court record of our county, about 1S30 '35 will prove the truth1 of the story. ' The snake-bit man did not receive any damages. ood Digestion. "Give us this day our daily bread" and good medicine to digest it, is , both reverent and human. The human stomach and liv er are fruitful sources of life's comforts; or disordered and diseased, they tingle misery along every nerve and through every artery. The man or woman with good digestion see beauty as they walk, and overcome obsta cles they meet In the routine of life, where the dyspeptic sees only gloom and stumbles and growls at even imaginary objects. The worla still needs two or three new kinds of medicine before death can be perfectly abolished ; but th it many lives have been prolonged, and mmy sufferers from Liver disea"e, Dyspep ia nhd Headache, have been cured -by Merrell s Ht patine, is no longer a doubt. It cures Headache in twenty min utes, and there is no question bat what it is the most wonderful i iscovery yet made in medical science.
