A Sad Pictafe of Affairs in the Crescent CHy . New Oeleans, September 4. New Orleans is in the gloom of the shadows Of, deth ; bronze John, that dread phantbrn spectre of the South, is stalk ing in the air. We have not been af flicted, fortunately, as have the people of: (irenada, - or possibly of either Vicksburg oriMemphis. The propor tionate death rates have certainly been largely in our tavor. now long they tnay. so continue remains to be seen. The fever with ua has unquestionably been largely curtailed by the liberal and somewhat systematic use of disin fectants. It has for the same reason Undoubtedly been -made to assume a less malignant type than is elsewhere experienced. The fever is bad enough, none the lees, as seen here in New Or leans. A large proportion "of the cases are neyer reported. : Our Creoles have their jjieculiar notions of treatment. Their sick, unless dangerous, are kept 10 tnemseives. xne scourge is every where and in epidemic form. Busi ness of every kind may be said to be suspended. The business houses are open.: it is true, and men still put in an appearance betimes in their offices and upon 'Change. All might as well be closed, however were it not for the mere matter of appearances. Save it be in the way of actual daily necessi ties, there-eannot be said to be a show ing even that Icoks like trade., BUSINESS AT A STANDSTILL j Canal streeti tne'Broadwav of New I Orleans-is the only thoroughfare that T 11 . , presents auytning use tne appearance of life. Even here the showing at its best is sombre enough. It is much as though shadowed with a veritable pall. The, large and fashionable stores are aim ost'whollv bereft of their customers. The few remaining clerks ; are loung ing listlessly about, gloomy and deject ed, and sadly in want of something t d.O." -There': is ao fashionable crowd. nobodyln want of fashionable creods. The men are neither' iq crowds, nor in a hurry. There are no longer any groups Of idlers at the street corners. Everyone that is able, seemingly, carries an urn- oreia, n.is not mat ids air is not; it is, on the contrary. ' decidedly cool. Ther,e is, none the less, a scorching sun. xnere .are also irequeut ana dashing showers. One has a dread of getting wet. The umbrella is raised at every crossing. Th6re is no jostling. no loud talking, no show of any bustle. V STAGNATION" AND GLOOM. The people they are but few and scattered at most pass along soberly and quietly. The street is the general centre for all of the various lines of street cars. Everybody, from no mat ter what part of the city, is put off here. JNo one thinks just now of walking who cab pay for a ride. The cars withal have but few passengers. They come and go with their accus tomed, regularity, but they come and go comparatively empty. The people, it is evident, save of a stern necessity, r ' i . m .; a . u remain at nome. mey urs uuv w wj seen most certainly, even' upon Canal 8 tree t. Here is the one avenue of all others, too, for the fashionable drives. There are none of the usual fancy turnouts to be met. "There can be no' driving for pleasure under the shadows of pestilence. The one thing wmcn casts the final gloom is the appearance of the long and well nigh .continuous lines ' of Furiefal processions.
