"The Cock-eyed Child of Destiny" is what the Cincinnati Enquirer calls Ben Butler. Bismarck's official salaries do not exceed $25, 000. Any ordinary railroad receiver does, better than that - The Chicago girl says: "Mamma, Just look yon der at that man we took for a stranger. May I never, if he wasn't papa last year." A man will brag. It may be of his physical pow ers, his profound wisdom, his morality, his deprav ity, or even his sickness, his violent cough, sore throat, and all that sort of thing. Boston Tran script. The Boston Post asserts that Annie Cary used to live in Durham, a little village In Maine, and the neighbors say they often heard Mrs. Cary at the woodshed door shouting: "Annie! Annie Louise! Annie Louise Cary ! Come into the house this min ute and chop them kindlings." Considering that "Don" Cameron sold "Ros" Obnkrlng out at Cincinnati, It Is very kind and Christian like in "Ros" to try and soothe "Don" in his present affliction In Pennsylvania Washington Post. - - The way in which Bob Ingersold manages his children Is quite characteristic of the ColoneL He says: "I place a well-filled pocketbook In an open drawer and the children go and help themselves to money whenever they want it They eat when they want to and what they want to. They may sleep all day If they choose, and sit up all night If they de sire. I don't coerce them. I never punish, never scold. They buy their own clothing and are mas ters of themselves." The doctor In structed a colored boy In his service to knock at the bedroom door of the lord bishop early m the morn ing and say: "My lord, the boy." Accordingly the next morning the boy, somewhat dazed by so much grandeur, knocked at the bishop's door, who called out: "Who Is there?" The boy responded: "The Lord, my boy." "Oh! my husband Is quite a paragon of perfec tion,'.' said Mrs. A. to Mrs. B. . , "Ah, Indeed ! Don't he drink any more?" asked Mrs. B. "No," said, Mrs. A. "About two months ago he came home intoxicated and I told him if ever he did so again rd go home to ma, and he don't drink now." "That accounts for It" said Mrs. B. "The other night my husband met him In the street hanging to a lamp post and asked him why he didn't go home, and he said he would as soon as he got sober." The second assistant postmaster gen eral has addressed a letter to Mr. VaU, superintendent of the railway mail service, as follows : "In addition to the verbal answer made to your letter of August 5, 1878, stating that you had notified the proprietois of such roads as have furnished additional facilities for the transportation of mail, that this de partment would allow them, July 1, 1878, an amount equal to the abatement of five per cent out Of the specific ap propriation of $125,000,1 desire to say that the amount appropriated for the railroad ser vice is so much less than will be required that unless Congress makes sufficient anoroDriations much of the service now in operation will have to be discontinued, in order to oring tne cost for 1879 within the appropriation. It will be necessarv. therefore, to notary the roads at once that the allowance can onlv be made for the period from July 1 to December 31, 1878, and that be yond this, this office will, of course, be governed by Congress."
