Sad and drear.
So sad and drear, fen
So full of sighing seems
This Autumn of the year,
This, rustling of the leaves,
The soughing of the trees; ! ;
So lone and cold.
This Autumn time of year.
Dark and chill.
So dark and chill;
- The nights &re dismal now,
And mournful sounds the rilL
The clouds sweep o'er the heaven
As though ay furies driven;
The Summer's o'er.
And Fall can work his wOL
Heart of mine,
This heart of mine.
I fear has reached its Autumn,
I feel my hopes decline;
They once were bright and fair,
Like Summer flowers are,
Some power hath seared.
As frost doth blight a vine.

- Valuable Invention by a Nortk CareUoiaB.
N Y. Correspondenoe, gist,. Raleigh Obsecveivi
-.Last evening I spent an hour lor two
at the annual exhibition of the Ameri-
can Institute. It presented an animar
ted scene: Thousands of people filled.
its spacious nails ana galleries; which
coyer an acre or two of ground, brit
liahtly illuminated with electric lighty:
where almost every imaginable ma
chine, and useful and ornamental handi
work, i are on exhibition and on sale.:
My principal purpose ; was to feee the.
sewing! machine ehair, invented, by a
North Carolinian, Mr. J. B. Underwood,
of Fayetteville, and-I found it general
ly surrounded by a small crowd of curi
ous .ladies . and their: escorts, Kiany , of
whom tried it and appeared to be satis
fied with its perforinance. Its object id
to confine the strain upon the muscles,
of the operator to the ; feet and the low
er part of the legs, instead of the great
er part of the body, as heretofore,' by
which many of the organic diseases of
women have been produced, so that we
have heard a physician" say that the in
vention of - the sewing - machine had
been a curse to the sex. The chair of
Mr. Undetwood, remedying that great
evil, iaa counteracting blessing. Though
only exhibited for a' few days and as
yet scarcely adverfised,at all, orders are
coming in from agents and, others, and
it is hardly too much to say that Mr.
Underwood will reap a fortune from it.
The price of the chair is $8.
I suppose the i inventive faculty is
born with a man. Whilst some people
and especially one that I could name
-have not the slightest idea of ma
chinery or the most remote conception
of an invention, Mr. Underwood sees at
once through the action of the most
complex machine, and. jumps .to a con
clusion as to how it may be improved.
There is, for instancer-a ; darner at
tached to some of the sewing machines.
Looking at One Of these a few days ago,
Mr. Underwood saw how it might De
improved by a very small addition. He
spent an hour or two and invested 40
1 cents in perfecting a model, took it to a
sewing machine maker, who had it ex
amined by his lawyer; an Expert in pat
ent matters, rouna that it was ongnai,
and at Once bopght it for $3d0, agree
ing to be at all! the expense of getting
the patent This darner, as improved
by Mr. Underwood, must be a blessing
to mothers who have a house full of
children with stockings to darn every
Saturday night. How unfortunate that
it was not invented earlier may be in
ferred from a story I heard a good many
years ago, of a widower with seven
children who courted a young lady and
was rejected for the reason that she
had "no . notion of undertaking to darn
seven pairs of socks every .Saturday
night" Only to think of the happy
family that "might have been" if this
only objection nad been obviated in
time by Mr. Underwood's invention.

When 412 Fahrenheit was reached the
darkey suddenly sailed fifty feet through
the black air, landing at the mouth of

cooly back to the fire and recovered his

had served as an onament to his head

he was put to bed; no apprehensions
are entertained that serious injury
