ItS humiliating to confess it," but they
say it is true that somebody stole the
shoes and hat of Jule Davidson, the
lynched Mooresville negro, while the
body was yet dangling from the tree
The photograph of the hanging body
shows it hatless and shoeless. Had
heard of stealing coppers from a dead
negro's eyes, pasturing goats on the
grave of one's father and sundry other
similar amenities, but this overshadows
them all. Hope there is some mistake
about it

Railroad Wotea.
Slight changes were made Sunday in
the schedules of mail trains on the
through lines.
All the talk among the railroad men
just now is about the new union depot.
The route agents are interested in the
talk which comes from Washington
about reducing their numbers and sala
ries. The basis upon which the num
bers of these officer are now regulated
is one to every 50 miles.
The recent convention in Chicago of
representatives of the leading lines of
Western railroads, resolved to with
draw the passes heretofore issued to
large shippers, thereby putting all
classes on the same footing. There has
been a good deal of talk at various times
of tills sort of action being taken by the
railroads of this section.
AVho will be the general ticket agent
of the railroads when the union depot
is built? AVe answer this conundrum
with the opinion that the first letter of
his name is Col. John Henry Baker.
Eighteen route agents run into Char
lotte. Of these two are colored one on
the Charlotte, Columbia & Augusta
Railroad and the other on the Carolina
Central.
Probably Fatal Cutting Affrays In
Gatttou.
Two serious cutting affrays occurred
in Gaston county, last Saturday, both
of 'which will, in all probability, prove
fatal. In Dallas, George Bowman was
stabbed by Jason Huck, once in the arm.
and again in the side, the knife pene
trating to sufficient depth to cut the
liver. The two men got into a difficul
ty, when Hucks went off to get a pis
tol to shoot his antagonist. The partv
from whom the pistol was obtained
unloaded it without the knowledge of
Hucks, who returned to Bowman and
began snapping it at him. Bowman
made his escape, but subsequently
learning that Huck's pistol was not
loaded, returned and began to beat him.
During this scuffle, Huck inflicted the
wounds above described. Bowman's
condition is extremely critical.
The other difficulty occurred at or
near Cherry ville. No particulars have
been obtained except that a man named
Van Sellers had his throat cut so badly
that his condition is regarded as hope
less. fhe Dead Body. Found in the Wood.
There have been some new develop
ments in reference to the body of the
negro found in the woods about four
miles northwest of the city in a partly
decomposed state, a few days ago.
There are two stories: one that about
the time when it is supposed that the
man died, judging from the condition
of the body, two negro men passed by a
house a short distance from the spot
where the body was found, and that a
quarrel was going on between them in
reference to a ten dollar bill ; that short
ly after this a pistol shot was heard by
several of the neighbors and a scream,
both sounds apparently coming from
the direction ot the spot where the body
was found.
Another storv is that about the time
that the negro lunatic escaped from the
county poor house, an unknown negro
appeared at the residence of the Misses
Todd, who live in the neighborhood of
where the body was found. His con
duct was very peculiar and frightened
the ladies, who called to a young man
living with them, to come and drive the
negro off the premises. The young man
drew a pistol or gun on the negro, and
tailing to trignten mm on Dy tms means,
fired at him several times. After the
first two or three shots the negro ran.
and the young man continued to shoot.
He is under the impression that after
the negro had gotten some distance
from the house, he fell. When last seen
he was going in the direction Of the
place where the body was found.
Both of these stories" "vlll be fully in
vestigated at the adjourned coroner's
investigation to take place at tne court
house, in this city Thursday.

be issued by H. P. Jones & Co, dealers

Broadway, ew York," copies of which
have bfeen mailed to large numbers of
people In this section of .North Carolina.
This crcnlar recites that the senders
are thef agents of a lottery which the
circular describes. "I enclose you a
ticket, pvhich is good for any one of the
drawings, with this understanding, that
I will arrange itj so that you wirl draw
a large prize, if you will agree to act as
agent fpr the sale of tickets. I am sure
that if ja large prize was drawn in your
State and shown around, that thousands
of tickets could be sold." .
The Sew York Sun exposes this steal,
fully and effectually. It shows that
when tte person addressed responds to
the letter he receives a ticket and short
ly thereafter notification that his ticket
has dr$wn a wiatch and chain worth
$300, which will be shipped upon re
ceipt of $3, which is necessary to pay
the expenses. Here is the cat in the

wants . the goods, sent C. O. D., and so
writes, he received the following:
"Deart Sir Your letter of instant

are entitled to th prize upon the pay

not received in fifteen days your watch

New Yearn Calling-.
The new year's callers will be on the
rounds to-day in lull force and the many
hospitable residences in the city will be
thrown open to visitors. It was the
Romans who first made the day one of
festivity, offering sacrifices to Janus,
whose principal testival occurred on
this day, amd taking care that all thev
thought said and did should be pure
and favorable, since everything was
Ominous for the occurrences of the
whole year. They appeared on the streets
in festive garments, exchanged kindly
salutations; and gave td each other
presents, consisting mostly of cilt dates.
figs, honey cakes, and copper coins.
The aay continued to be observed m
different wys as a holiday through the
middle age$. x or many years in conti
nental Europe the day was one on which
friends exchanged gifts, but gradually
congratulatory wishes have been substi
tuted lor tine more substantial expres
sions of esteem. The custom of mak
ing the day jthe occasion of social visits
by gentleman among their friends and
acquaintances was hrst introduced in
New York city, and dates loack almost
to the settlement of the town by the
Dutch. It has been imitated with more
or less success in different parts of the
United States, but until recently has
not been very generally practiced in the
South. The custom, though sometimes
abused, preseuts many pleasant fea
tures, and the young people of Char
lotte will enjoy these to-day on a more
extensive scale than on any previous
occasion.
The young men will go out in parties
of three or tour, the most of them start
ing about 2 o'clock, though some will
begin at an earlier hour.
The Observer has been able to gath
er the following information concern
ing those who will receive, which, how
ever, must not be taken as including all
the houses which will be open to friends
and acquaintances. Under the existing
circumstances it has been impossible to
