One Experience.
The experience of all on new year's
day was not alike. There was Charles
Augustus, for instance, who has some
unpleasant recollections in connection
with the gilded pleasures of the occa
sion. The story has been converted
into rhyme; hear it:
Augustus had a new year's card,
Bevel-edged and gaudy,
Ami everywhere Augustus went
He swapped it off for toddy.
Augustus had a lavender pants,
He sat down once too much in,
And photo'd a curbstone view thereon
.Behind, like a bright escutcheon.
Augustus gave his cards around
I ntil he used the stock up,
And woke, a sadder, wiser man,
Next morning, in the lock-up.
Improving: e Sidewalks.
According to the resolution passed at
the last meeting of the board of alder
men, a called meeting will beheld with
in the next few days for the purpose of
receiving a report of a committee ap
pointed to ascertain how the sum of
$1,000 could be spent to the best advan
tage in improving the sidewalks. Since
the action of the board, the matter has
been considerably discussed, and it is
to be hoped that something will be done
immediately. Only a few days ago we
had an opportunity of seeing in what a
terrible condition the sidewalks off the
main streets could be brought by con
tinuous wet weather. Let the improve
ments be permanent improvements.
The moveable plank system, as pro
posed by some me in here of the board,
won't begin to do. Whv, half of these
proposed bridges for the" muddy chasms
would be stolen in two nights and
burned up before morning. Give us
sand and rock, and spread them out as
much as possible.

A Kow in a Cotton market.
The factors and buyers .in the Augus
ta cotton market have recently had a
quarrel which involves- a question of
some interest. The former published a
circular agreeing that on and after Jan
uary 1, 1879, they will retain in their
possession, duly marked, all samples by
which they may sell cotton, until the
cotton thereby represented shall have
been delivered to the purchaser, and
after the shipment of the cotton thus
represented said samples shall be held
as said seller's property.
In consequence the buyers held a
meeting on new year's day and adopted
the following resolutions':
Whereas, certain of the cotton fac
tors of this city have undertaken to in
augurate a new rate to-wit: That the
seller of cotton shall "retain the sale
samples, contrary to the custom hith
erto prevailing in this city, and in all
the principal markets of this State, viz:
Savannah, Macon, Columbus, Atlanta,
and in Charleston
1. Resolved, That the relation of buy
er and seller being mutual, no rule regu
lating trade can be established but by
mutual agreement or concession.
2. We do hereby bind and pledge our
selves not to submit to the above rule
and to buy no cotton at all unless with
right, as heretofore, of taking and re
taining possession of the purchase
samples after the cotton is shipped.

The Sacred Concert Last Night.
Notwithstanding the very cold weath
er last night by far the coldest we
have had this season there was a first
rate crowd at Calvary church to hear
the sacred concert given by the child
ren of Try on Street Methodist church,
under the management of Mr. A. L.
Butt, and what is still further worthy
of remark, all the children who were
to take part Jn the evening's entertain
ment, were also present The concert
was, in all respects, the same as that
given at Trvon Street church, Christ
mas night. Even the feature of Santa
Claus was retained. On this occasion
1 he came in with a bag of apples in his
ancient oack ana distributed them
around to the children who contributed
to the pleasures of the evening. Mr.
Butt deserves va great deal of credit for
the pains he has taken to bring the
children, some of whom are quite small,
up to the degree of perfection which
they have attained. The audience were
delighted with the entertainment, last
night, which went through from begin
ning to end without a balk of any sort.
A Case of Intimidation.
This thing of playing on musical in
struments has gotten to be rather a dan
gerous business unless you are going to
. play mighty fast. Not long ago a Wa-
Lauga uuumy uiaii was Kinea oy ms
host because he didn't fiddle fast
enough, in the opinion of his hospitable
host, to meet the requirements of the
occasion ; and only day before yester
day a drunken fellow inveigled our
new organ-grinder down into one of the
back alleys of the city, and was about
to visit dire vengeance upon him be
cause he didn't grind out more square
feet of music to the minute. We have
not said whether or not we consider the
summary annihilation of fiddlers and
organ-grinders justifiable or not on
general principles ; it has been said by
some that they cannot be included
among those who are "in the peace of
God and the State," and that therefore
to kill them is not a crime. However
this may be, the Teller committee might
take the cases in hand and see what
they think about it.
