Dr. Chatard, one of the owners of the
Brewer mine in South Carolina, about
fifteen miles from the city, returned
from the mine yesterday afternoon,
having been engaged for the last seve
ral days in locating machinery with
which to begin operations on an exten
sive scale. They are greatly encour
aged with the prospects there, and the
general belief is that they have a bo
nanza. Dr. McCombs, another of the
owners, went down a tew days ago to
inspect the ore, and in the first panful
he washed he found a lump of gold
worth about $20. The mine has not
been operated for several years owing
to litigation as to the ownership of it,
but several families have been main
tained there by simple pan washing.
We expect great results from this mine
when the present owners get to work
ing it with a full force.
Military aieetitiK.
The object of the meeting of officers
of the State Guard in Raleigh on the
10th is to elect certain officers to fill va
cancies, and also, according to the iVews,
to prepare a memorial setting forth the
merits of the Guard, its adaptability to
the needs of the State, and its capacities
in a military point of view. The mat
ter of aiding State troops is now receiv
ing special attention all over the Union,
and it is in view of the necessity for
proper action as to the matter that the
meeting is called.
The News also states that the report
of the adjutant-general, which is now
in the hands of the printer, will show a
vast improvement m the organization,
efficiency and numbers of the troops,
wnicn now rorm a torce of nearly 3,000.
The Representatives in Congress from
this State will doubtless be asked to

Hungry and Suffering People.
What has become of the aid society
organized in Charlotte some years ago ?
There is a special call just now for the
class of work in which it proposed to
engage. Our information, gathered from
reliable sources, is that there are many
needy persons in the city, some of whom
are suffering greatly from hunger and
cold during this trying weather. We
responded nobly during the summer
months to the call for aid from the
fever stricken cities of the South. We
have in our own midst many people
honest and worthy people, who are in
mucji greater need to-day than were
many to whom we willingly gave what
we were even hardly able to spare. This
is afact, which any one who will take
tneitrouble to investigate the condition
of many squalid homes on the outskirts
of the city can ascertain for himself.
There is no necessity for a lengthy ap
peal to the charity or the humanity of
our people. We simply call attention
to a matter which many of us in the
enjoyment of the comforts of life are
prone to overlook. Let the aid society
be called together at once and steps be
taken immediately for collecting funds
to provide these people with wood and
bread. The Young Men's Christian
Association will doubtless undertake
the distribution of these. Whatever is
done must be done at once. Who will
take the lead

Mr. H. R Stevens:
Dear Sir Three years ago I was suffering terribly
with Inflammatory Rheumatism. Our minister's
wife advised me to take VEGETINE. After tak
ing one bottle, I was entirely relieved. This year,
feeling a return of the disease, I again commenced
taking it, and am being benefited greatly. It also
greatly improves my digestion. -Respectfully,

I
SAFE AND SURE.
Mr. H. R. Stevens: .
In 1872 your Vegetlne was recommended to me,
and yielding to the perauatlons of a friend,
I consented to try It At the time I was suffering
from general debility and nervous prostration,
superinduced by overwork and irregular habits.
Its wonderful strengthening and curative proper
ties seemed to affect my debilitated system from
the first dose; and under its persistent use I rapid
ly recovered, gaining more than usual health and
good feeling, since then I have not hesitated to
give VegeUne my most unqualified indorsement,
as being a safe, sure and powerful agent In promot
ing health and restoring the wasted system to new
life and energy. Vegetlne Is the only medicine I
use; and as long as I live I never expect to find a
better. Yours truly, W. H. CLARK,

The following letter from Rev. 6. W Mansfield.
formerly pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church,
Hyde Park, and at present settled in Lowell, must
convince every one who reads his letter of the won
derful curative Qualities of Vegetlne as a thorough
cleanser and purifier of the blood.
Hyde Park, Mass., Feb. 15, 1876.
Mr. H. R Stevens:
Dear Sir About ten years azo mv health fattad
through the depleting effects of dyspepsia; nearly
a year later I was attacked by typhoid-fever in its
worst form. It settled in my back, and took the
form of a large deep-seated abscess, which was
fifteen months in gathering. I had two surgical
operations by the best skill la the State, but receiv
ed no permanent cure. I suffered grfat pain at
times, and was constantly weakened by a profuse
discharge. I also lost small pieces of bone at dif-
ierent times.
Matters ran on thus about seven Tears, till Mav.
1874. when a friend recommended me to eo to
your office, and talk with you of the virtue of Veee-
tine. I did so, and by your kindness passed through
your manufactory, noting the Ingredients, kc., by
which your remedy is produced.
By wnat i saw and neara l gained some confi
dence in Vegetlne.
I commenced taking It soon after, but felt worse
from its effects; still I persevered, and soon felt it
was benefitting me In other respects Yet I did not
see the results I desired till I had taken it faithful
ly for little more than a year, when the difficulty In
the back was cured: and for nine months I have
enjoyed the best of health.
1 have In that time gained twenty-five pounds of
flesh, being heavier than ever before in my life, and
was never more aoie to per rorm labor than now.
During the past few weeks I had a scrofulous
swelling as large as my fist gather on another part
of my body.
I took Veeeune faithfully, and it removed it level
with the surface In a month. I think I should have
been cured of my main trouble sooner II I h d tak
en larger doses, after having become accustomed
to its effects.
Let your Datrons troubled with scrofula or kldnev
disease understand that it takes time to cure
chronic diseases; and. If they will patiently take
vegetlne, it will, in my Judgement, cure them.
