OBSEUVATIOSS.
When Don Piatt was in New York he was enticed
into the opera house, when Her Majesty's troupe
were performing. The good man was evidently
shocked, for he wrote home: "I saw enough nak
enness to make the loose-jointed Talmage howl
with anguish. Women appeared in a style of dress
or undress tha,t would have made our grand
mothers blush to use as a night-gown.
A colored clergyman within the limits of our fan
city stepped into a grocery store on State street re
cently, and accosting the proprietor said: "Our
church Is out ob communion wine." "Very well,"
said the accommodating dealer, "about what are
you going to want?" "Well." responded the color
ed wearer of the white neckcloth, "we havn't got
'null communion wine to las de year fru, and some
of the ladles ob de congregrashun hab expressed a
preference for gin." New Haven Register.
"What's the woman charged with?" said the
court "She's a dead beat and vagrant, your honor"
said the officer who arrested her. Then the woman
spoke up, and said: If I can prove I'm all right
will your honor, let me go ?" "Of course," said the
court "Then," said the prisoner, "here is the
family Bible, by which you'll see I'm Moll Wright"
"Saw my leg off," shouted the officer, who saw the
point, "if she hasn't beat the court, too." And the
court rubbed its nose with its forefinger, and gently
remarked, "Discharge the prisoner."
FROM WASHINGTON.
The Korth Carolina Senatorial Contet The Cipher
Telegrams Congressional Contests, &c.
Special Dispatch to the Baltimore Sun.
THE NORTH CAROLINA SENATORSHIP.
Washington, January 10. A North
Carolina Democrat, of great prominence,
who has just arrived, gives it as his
opinion that all the Democratic mem
bers of the Legislature will go into the
senatorial caucus, and will be bound by
its decision, and that Gov. Vance will
receive a majority of the votes of the
caucus and be elected Senator. This
opinion is not shared by the friends of
Judge Merrimon, who still say they
think he will be re-elected.
THE POTTER INVESTIGATION.
The action of the Potter committee
to-day in deciding to proceed with their
in vestigation is in accordance with what
has been anticipated for some days.
The cipher telegrams will be first in
quired into, and then other matters. A
member of the committee states that
he thinks $5,000 will be sufficient to
complete the investigation. The Re
publican members of the committee
would not vote on the question of in
vestigating the cipher telegrams, for the
reason, as alleged, that they did not con
sider it was a subject which concerned
the Republicans, all of which is very
silly.
WILL NOT CONTEST.
Rainey and Smalls, the two colored
Congressmen from South Carolina, who
were candidates for re-election, have, it
is said, decided not to contest the seats
of their Democratic competitors who
have been awarded the certificates of
election. This indicates that neither of
them is inclined to think he has a good
case. The, seats of both Rainey and
Smalls in the present House are con
tested, and they appear to think they
will be fortunate if they are able to hold
on to them.
LOOKING AHEAD.
Mr. Blaine and many other Republi
cans are quite certain, so .they say, that
it is an impossibility for a colored man
in the South to vote the Democratic
ticket. . But if; seems there are colored
men in the South who are willing to
lio)d office under the Democrats. .About
this, time each Southern Senator, as he
opens his morning mail, naturally ex
pects to find ; a dozen , or more letters
from friends and, constituents generally
asking to be remembered when the Sen
ates appointments are distributed after
the 4th 6t March ; hesft j letters ? are
mostly from brigadier"generals, colonels,
majors and judges. But Senator Mor
gan was somewhat surprised to receive
a letter from' plain James S. Scott, a col
ored man, who is editor of a paper at
Montgomery, and who wants an office
under the Democratic Senate to help
him put his paper fairly on its ega.
Senator Morgan thinks he ought to do

BATTLES WITH THE GAFFS.
Shawl Necks, Chany Eyes, and Deminiques to
" : Mm in Deadly Strife.
; i New York Sun. llth. ; :
"The most gallant creature in this
world is a fighting coek," said a Ne w
york millionaire turfman latelv. This
turfman is now interested, with" others,
in the greatest interstate cocking main
e veE fought in this WHintry. The fight
isto be between Kentucky and Tennes
see birds on one side and Georgia chick
ens on-th other, including cocks of the
two; most celebrated strains in the Uni
ted :States-MJie Georgia shawl necks,
who lare reported never to have lost a
mainy and the fiery chany eyes of North
Carolina. The battle is to open in New
Orleans on February 20. Thirty pairs
of chickens are on the list, all to fight
that are matched, four to six pounds ;
$250 eachfight, with $2,500 on the main.
There is also to be a shake-bag fight for
$1,000.; Among the dangerous foes the
shawl iecs will meet are the Kentucky
dominiques, the pet birds of the blue
grass region.
The shawl necks will be followed to
the battle-field by 500 leading sporting
men and turf men of Georgia, while an
equal delegation will accompany the
Kentucky and; Tennessee fowls. The
birds will be backed up to the hilt, and,
as in all these Southern contests, the
betting will be enormous. Long gaffs
are to be used and slashers barred.
Mr. Charles Brown, of Columbus, Ga
will manage the shawl necks. They are
small black and red birds, with stout,
baggy necks. They are lively shufflers,
easily handled, have a good bill hold,
and are intelligent, going right to their
work and making a quick fight. In
shake-bag fights the shawl neck always
whips his bigger foe. They are said to
have won over $40,000 in prize money
the last eight years.
If the shawl necks conquer this time,
a main for $10,000 is talked of between
them and New York chickens on Long
Island. Many of the finest game chick
ens in the world are now being raised
on Long Island.
Important Ruling on the Homestead.
Lincoln Progress
Judge Schenck decided an interesting
case at chambers this week. Warren
Gheen and others obtained - judgments
in 1869, on debts contracted prior to 1868,
against R. R.' Summey, issued execu
tions and under them the homestead of
the defendant was laid off and the ex
cess sold. Since the decision of the
Supreme. Court of the United States,
declaring the homestead law unconsti
tutional, plaintiffs renewed these exe
cutions and were now about to sell the
homestead. The judge decided that no
appeal or any proceeding in the nature
of an appeal being taken from the al
lotment of the homestead it was res
judicata and estopped between the
parties, and he therefore enjoined the
sale. An appeal wras taken and the
final decision will be Tendered at this
term of the Supreme Court.
Ah Agtoatshiag Fact.
ilA large proportion of the American people are
to-day dying from the effects of Dyspepsia or dis
ordered liver. The result of these diseases upon
the masses of Intelligent and valuable people is
most alarming, making life actually a burden In
stead of a pleasant existence-of enjoyment and
usetulaess as it ought to be. There Is no good rea
son for this, if vou will only throw aside prejudice
and skepticism, take the advice of Druggists and
your friends, and try one bottle of Green's August
Flower, your speedy relief Is certain. Millions of
bottles or this medicine have been given away to
try its virtues; with satisfactory results In every case.
Tou can buy a sample bottle for 10 cents to try.
Three doses will relieve the worst case. Positively
sold by all druggists on the Western Continent
