The board met in called session yes- teraas afternoon, mayor smitn, j&Jder- men Miller, Scott, Tatem, Sanders, Wil son, Weddangton, $utler and Moore were present. Mr. Ahrens, who petitioned for the privilege of removing his shops and planing mill from their present lo cation to tne rear ox nis residence on Fifith street, was present to urge the J- i 1 " 'A granung or uih request. On motion of Alderman Scott, the request was granted, provided, in the .opinion of the city attorney, the City may noi oe neiu uaoie to any aamages that may result from the mill being in a thickly settled portion of the town. Aldermen Wilson, of the committee appointed at the last meeting to ascer tain if there was not an oil tank loca ted in the city, the owners of which are are liable to taxation, reported that Chess, Carly & Co., had such a tank, and were doing quite an extensive business, having increased the oil trade five-fold; also the company were purchasing oil barrels and creating a trade which had not hitherto existed. He recommended that a tax of $25 be Imposed on the company for the privilege of doing busines in the city. Mr. A. T. Moss, agent of the compa ny, appeared before the board and made a statement in reference to the compa ny's business, saying that it was doing a legitimate business, and was willing to pay a tax of 625, which he thought was sufficient. Some little discussion followed, and on motion of Aldhrman Moore, the, matter was refeered to the February meeting. The mayor announced that Capt. V. Q. Johnson, on his invitation, would meet with the board later in the even ing to discuss the removal of the Caro lina Central Railroad shops to this city, and on motion, the board adjourned till 7:30 o'clock to hear the proposition of Capt. Johnson. EVENING SESSION CAROLINA CENTRAL RAILROAD SHOPS. The board convened pursuant to ad journment at 7:30 o'clock, the mayor, Aldermen Dowd, Miller, Moore, San drs, Scott, Wilson, Weddington and Walker being present. The mayor introduced Capt. Johnson to the board, and stated that he was present on his (the mayor's) invitation to make a proposition from the road in reference to the removal of the shops. Capt. Johnson addressed the board, saying he was satisfied that the shops would be moved to Charlotte if the city would give the company the sum of $20,000 and the land upon which to erect them. He read a letter from Mr. Edward Matthews, the owner of the majority of -the bonds of the com pany, saying that if the city would con tribute the amount already specified, that the receivers had his consent to the removal ; otherwise, tlie question of removal was left to their discretion. Capt. Johnson went on further to describe the exact character of the buildings which the company propose to erect, stating that they would all be of brick with iron roofing, and would cost between $34,000 and $36,000. They only proposed to move one building from Laurinburg, a wooden structure which had recently been built. In reply to inquiries, he stated furth er that there were regularly employed at the shops 120 hands, and that the board could see from this to what ex tent the population of Charlotte would be increased. The company did not propose to erect but one dwelling house on the land granted, that was for the master mechanic. In reply to further inquiries as to what guarantee the city would have in case the road should by any means change hands, Capt. Johnson said he supposed such a guarantee could be obtained by having it included in the decree of the court which authorized the change of location ; for the road be ing in the hands a receiver, a decree "must be issued before anything can be done. After an informal discussion of -some length, in which the details of the sub ject were fully gone over, Maj. Dowd submitted the following: Whereas, A proposition has ,been made by Capt. V. Q. Johnson, superin tendent of the Carolina Central Rail road, to locate the shops of that compa ny in or near the city of Charlotte, for the consideration of $20,000 in money and 20 or 25 acres of land, therefore Resolved, That a committee consist ing of the mayor and two aldermen be appointed to confer with the authori ties of the said railroad company as to what are to be the terms, conditions and details of the proposed subscription, with the view of giving this board defi nate information for their future con sideration and action. "The author of the resolution stated that his object was to secure a definite proposition to submit to the voters of the city : that as the matter now stood this could not be done. The resolution was then put to the board and carried unanimously, after which the board abjourned. i i i A Temporary Aattociation for the Re lief of the Poor. A meeting was held at the rooms of the Young Men's Christian Associa tion yesterday to. take into considera tion the relief of the poor of the city, Gen, Jno. A. Young presiding.
