The Zodiacal igbt
The Zodiacal ight hW been unusu
ally brilliant during many evenings in
February, its vivid coloring making
the surrounding heavens dark in com
parison. This interesting phenomenon
may be seen on any clear, moonless
evening in March. It becomes visible
about an hour after sunsei as a column
of soft white light, the base of the cone
resting on the part of the horizon where
the sun went down, and the apex reach
ing to the Pleiades. The soft glow of
the mysterious light differs from every
other appearance in the sky, and no
words can describe the etherial delica
cy, the tilmy texture, and softened bril
liancy of this celestial visitor, as
strangely incomprehensible as it is ex
quisitely beautiful.
Hi
of Ulr. Vlsvtl. B. Walker.
The Wilmington Sun of yesterday
contains the following: "A telegram
was received here by the relatives of
Piatt D. Walker, Esq, night before last,
from Raleigh, stating that he was quite
ill. Yesterday, Mrs. Walker, his mother,
accompanied by Mr. Junius Davis, went
up to Baleigh, and in the afternoon a
second telegram happily relieved the
anxiety of nis fridnds. He was then
doing very well. Great solicitude has
been felt on his , account, and we are
truly glad that we are able to give thus
early such favorable intelligence."
Mrs. Walker, his wife, left. Charlotte
the middle of last week for Raleigh,
but at that time he was not reported to De
sick. His many friends here will regret
exceedingly to hear of his condition.

Chas. Emerson & Co's city directory
of Charlotte has just been issued Jrorn
The Observer job department, litis
a book of 160 pages and is a complete
index to the residents of the city, also a "
classified business directory, to which is
added an appendix containing useful
information as to city, county and State,'
besides miscellaneous matter, together
with a street directory, census of Char
lotte by races and sexes in addition ; and
a gazetteer of Mecklenburg coun
ty and a postoffice directory of North
Carolina, The directory has been got
ten up with great care and is remarka
bly accurate and complete in all par
ticulars. The facts concerning the population
are f much interest, the census taken by
them being the tirst made in Charlptte
since 1870. The population is given by
wards as follows:
Want 1. White males, 674; white fe
males, 719; total, 1,393.
Colored males,' 303 ; colored females,
447 ; total, 750.
Ward 2. White males, 351 : white fe

Colored males, 1,440 ; colored females,
1,824; total, 3.364.
Total inhabitants within the corpor
ate limitsr 7,107. ."j a 0 7 :j
While this is the copulation of Char
lotte proper, it is a well known f ac that
tne corporate limits do not inciuae a
arge number ot persons, who, to all in
tents and purposes, except in the matter
of paying city taxes, are citizens of
Charlotte. The parties who maae up
the directory assert that there are be
tween1 a thousand and fifteen hundred
persons who live so close to the imagin
ary lines constituting the city limits,
that our actual population may he
)Ut down at something over 8,000,
