Vienra n Some t Alie Auediloa of the Day. f 4 This distinttuished gentleman, 'lieu tenant governor of the State from the time of Gov. Caldwell's death until the election in 1876, and now member elect of Congress from the seventh district, has been in the city for nearly a week past, being of counsel in the Pethel wife-poisoning case, and left, yesterday morning, for his home in Statesville to make his preparations for going on to Washington. He will leave home .next Priday m order to be present at the opening of the eitra'session on the I8th and in time for the caucus of the House Democrats should that not take place before Monday. A man devoted to his State and his section, Col. Armfield takes his seat in Congress with the idea that the Southern man is as good as any other man, and with the idea that the time when the South might with pro priety have held back and hesitated to assert its rights has gone by. He real-. izes that the South occupies a com manding position in the nation, and be lieves that it is its duty to avail itself of the advantages which its position gives it. Col. Armfield believes that the Un ion will never be fully restored until, the South has its full share of all ap4 propriations, of all foreign "appoint ments; and can feel Itself entitled and have its right recognised ;to Aspire to the presidency of the United States. As to the matter of the speakership of the next House, Col. Armfield has no opinions or preferences which are not subject to change. He rates Mr. Ran dall as the finest parliamentarian in the House, but as at present advised is rather favorable to Mr. Blackburn, whom he regards as abold,:able and ag gressive man. This is not a confirmed preference, however, and fuller inf orma tion may bring about a change of mind on the part of Col. Armfield. So far as the next presidency is con cerned, Col. Armfield regards anything that may be said on the subject now as mere conjecture. He is of the opinion, though, that the contest is between Thurman and Tilden; that if the hard money wing of the party should prevail Tilden will be nominated; if the soft money wing, then Thurman. The South will, he believes, support Thurman, the South favoring a liberal currency, and Mr. Thurman being squarely plant ed on that platform. , Up arhec, . point Col-., Armfield' speaks-interestingff. -He expects to see the day when "the Democrats ! of the South will be found battling iov the main tenanee-of the rights- otHhe negro against the .RepuWioans of the Norths He made this declaration upon his can vass last summer, and is fully persuad ofthexutti oMt f j r j - 61. While all bf orir tfeople knew Mm well5 by (repu tation before, many of them who had neVer known him personally met him during his recent stay here and were charmed with him, Naturally his peo ple have high expectations of him now as he is about entering upon his con gressional career. He is . recognized everywhere throughout the State no where more fully so than in his own dis trict as not only a most courtly and engaging gentleman but as a man of commanding abilities; and it is no more than truth to sav that North Carolina' will not send to the forty-sixth Confess -f a representative wno possesses jii n more eminent degree than he those qualities which Win t render him alike an honor to his State and a useful man to his constituents. ,' rrheWa(r 'Werk.
