ITIiues, mining- and Miners.
Mr. Wm. Richards, who was in the
city yesterday, reports the Duffy mine
booming. He brought along with him
eight or ten pennyweights of gold, which
he had taken, just before starting, from
a couple of bushels of ore.
A gentleman from New York, a rep
resentative of large reduction works, is
expected in the city this morning. He
comes with a view to the establishment
here of a branch of the works which he
represents.
A party of Northern gentlemen, rep
resenting large capital and themselves
interested in mining, arrived at Thom

special car, and are prospecting among
the mines of Davidson county.
The new owners and corporators of
the Simpson Gold and Silver Mining
company, of this county, are to meet at
the Central Hotel in this city on the 2d

and carry out the plan of incorpora

The Charlotte rat is noted for his
boldness and his ability to multiply.
There is a daily, or rather a nightly, il
lustration of this latter characteristic,
but the former is not so frequently ex
hibited. Occasions make rats as well
as men. So it has been reserved for
the rats in the Central Saloon to exhibit
a degree of personal daring which is
worthy of record. To be brief they at
tacked and ate up John Bixby's wild
cat. Tis true the cat was dead, but
how were the rats to know this? Its
skin had been stuffed with bran, and as
it sat there, the intelligent human eye
could hardly discover that it was not a
living cat in repose that seductive re
pose which has cost many an unsus
pecting rat his life. It is not proposed
to detract from the justly earned repu
tation of these Charlotte rats for person
al courage : far be it from us to rob them
of one leaf of their crown of laurels ; but
would it not add something to their
discretion to take account of the fact
that they are bar-room rats, that the
tanks in which the remnants of the
tod are X)ured, are frequently left un
covered and that rats have been known
to innocently drink from these. The
evil spirit of envy has suggested a con
clusionthe rats were drunk !
Navigation of tne Yadkin.
A gentleman in this city is the own
er of a farm on the Yadkin river, and
on his recent return from a trip to a
portion of the section of country drain
ed bv that stream, reports that the peo
ple are confident that in a short time,
at least that portion of the river be
tween Salisbury and East Bend, about
forty miles above, will be navigable by
small steamers, lnrougn ine exiraor
dinary exertions of ex-Congressman
Robbins and others, an appropriation
of $20,000 has been secured. To this
Capt. John Dobson and others who have
especially interested themselves in the
matter are confident that an equal
amount will be added by the owners of
land alonsr the banks ot the river, ine
difficulties to be overcome between Sal
isbnrv and East Bend are said -to be
slie-hi. At the latter point and above
it thpi-p. ar numerous obstacles. Ex
actly what these are and the expense of
overcoming them is not vet known, as
the report of the engineers sent to sur
vey the stream has not yet been pub
lished. In a letter explaining the delay.
in laying the report before the comniitt

Parties from Rock Hill, S. C, tell
how, a few days, ago, Mr. A. Friedham,
a merchant of that place, sent for a

Friedham, "it non-exblosive. I show
you." He took the top off of the can,
and struck a match on tfhe leg of his
breeches. By this time the tinner was
three blocks away. Friedham stuck
his match down in the oil, expecting to
see it go omVas had been the case be
fore, and it wasn't a second before the
people next door thought there had
been an earthquake in town, attended
by a volcanic eruption. When Fried
ham got through with his business in
the back-room, during the transaction
of which he in some manner or other
lost his eyebrows, he appeared at the
front door and remarked to a friend
that he had to throw every ounce of
meal in the house into the can to put
the fire out, and was short forty gallons
of oil besides, but it was better that
than to have let things take their course
for he wouldn't have gotten a cent of
insurance on either house or stock.
The tinner rates himself as the most
far-seeing man in Bock Hill.
TRIBUTE OF HCSPECT,
Whereas, It has pleased Almighty
God, in his infinite wisdom, to take from
our midst our beloved member and late
chief, James H. Orr; now, therefore,
be it
1. litmolced, That in his death this
department has sustained a great loss.
In every relation which he bore to it, he
discharged his duty with unexceptional
fidelity. As a member he was prompt
and efficient ; as chief of the department
he was firm, laborious and faithful, and
at the same time kind and considerate;
as a comrade in our organization he was
always zealous, alwavs watchful and
jealous of its rights and honor. Few
members have been more faithful than
he, and few have left us with higher
claims to pur affectionate remembrance.
2. Resolved, That we tender to his
family and friends our sympathy and
condolence.
3. Resolved, That the rooms, engine
houses and truck houses be draped in
mourning for thirty days, and that each
member of the several companies wear
their usual badge of mourning for thirty
days.
4. Resolved, That The Daily Ob
server be requested to publish these
resolutions.
