Removal of George Pethel. When ii was found that it would be impossible to try George Pethel at the late term of Meckleifbnrg court, Judge Kerr ordered the shariff to return the prisoner to the jail of Rowan, in which county the killing occurred. Sheriff Waggoner, of Rowan, came over yester day and got the prisoner, taking, him over on the evening train. It is not likely that he will be tried before Au gust, as it is not probable there will be -m extra term of the court. 'I he I.inkliaiv lUurder Trial, The trial of Miss Linkhaw for the murder of Ed. Ilartman in Lumberton, will be begun in Robeson Superior Court this week. TsJudge McKoy will hear the case. The defendant has em ployed Col. Foster French, of Lumber ton and Col. Duncan K McRae, of Wil mington, as her counsel. It is under stood that the defence will endeavor to prove emotional insanity. The trial will excite a great deal of interest in this section of the State. Personal. ' .Indge Kerr is still confined to his room and is really very weak. He will he unable to hold Cabarrus court. The physicians are putting him through a course of treatment the results from which they hope will appear in a few da vs. His wife is expected to arrive to day. Mr. S. Mr. John Wolfe, whose venerable form has been missi Jg from our streets for some time past, has been very dan gerously ill, but yesterday was slightly improved. a . . Kailroad Note. The contest between engineers as to who shall have the honor of having pulled the largest number of cars is still going on. George Garrison of the Car olina Central is now ahead. He went into Wilmington Sunday morning with forty-five freight cars, drawn by the engine "Cape Fear." As an evidence, of the abundance of the water supply on the Western North Carolina Railroad, it is stated that there is not a single wittettank west of States ville supplied by a well. The water lank pumper is a character unknown ip there. ; As engineer Baskfcrvill-e, of the Garo lina Centralwas cotoiftgup, yesterday morning, he was presented, on the line, with a bill for 12.50 for .a yearling bull which he v.A killed on the last trip down. Mr. liasketjville, however, was "not buying any bef to-day." The bill to make engineers' &md conductors on this road pay for cattle killed by their trains, failed in the House. The enormous sale ofXr. bull's Cough Syrup has had the effect of bringing out numerous similar remedies; but the people are not so easily Induced t make a trial of the new article, when they value the old and reliable one--Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup. CITY FATHERS. 'Flie Regular nontbly meeting: of the Board of Aldermen. The board met in regular session yes terday afternoon at the mayor's office. Present, Mayor Smith, Aldermen Mil ler, Tatem, Moore, Sanders, Nisbet, Wilson, Butler, Weddington, Dowd ard Scott. . . , . , . , .Aldef man MUlei of th firiancecqan mittee, reported that he had purchased two copies of Emerson's city directory for the use of the city clerk and mar shal, the matter of the purchase having been left to the committee. The question of the taxation of Chess, Carley& Ctfs oil tank came up for discussion. 1 - , . . 1 Alderman Moore explained his posi tion in reference to the subject under discussion, and moved that the report of the committee at the last meeting, making the tax $25 for the current year, be adopted. h motion was Put and carried. i . b . Harrison, representing the fire department, appeared before the board with a bill for five hundred feet of hose tor the Neptune fire company, for ap proval, stating that the hose was guar anteed to last for three years, if proper ly taken care of, and to stand four hun dred pounds of pressure. It w;s understood that the city treas urer would pay the bill ($475) if the committee to whom the purchase was entrusted would approve it, after the test had been applied. Alderman Dowd presented a petition from the Pioneer fire company, asking that the city place them on an equal footing with the Hornet fire company,, in reference to the feeding of the horses which they propose to purchase at an early day. The company had on hands funds for the purchase of the horses and for preparing stables, &c, which funds had been collected by con tributions. The petition was granted. Mr. C. F. Harrison, representing the lire department, also, in behalf of the Pioneer and Hornet companies, stated tld the companies were sadly in need ot Jiose ; that what they had on hand was not sufficient for ordinary uses, and was liable at any time to burst. He therefore asked that six hundred feet be purchased for each companv. Alderman Scott moved that the re quest be granted and that the hose be purchased in the same manner as that for the use of the Neptune company, and the motion was carried. It was understood that the old hose and fixtures could be sold for a small sum and that the receipts therefrom would be devoted to defraying the ex penses of this purchase. A petition was read from the cotton buyers of the city, requesting the board to continue the cotton inspector in office for two or three months, if not for the entire year, on the ground that nearly all the cotton brought to the city by wagon wras taken to the platform between the hours of 10 a. m. and 1 p. m., and that the weigher would not be able to inspect a; id weigh the cotton with out great inconvenience to farmers by the delay which would necessarily re sult. The board, on motion," resolved to continue the inspector for one month longej-. Alderman Scott introduced the fol lowing ordinance and asked its adoption- ORDINANCE IN RELATION -TO COCK KIG1ITING. Be it ordained by the Board of Alder men of the City of Charlotte: That it shall not be lawful for any person or persons, within the limits of this city, to engage in the practice of cock-fighting with gaffs, whether such fighting be accompanied with betting or not; and every person who may hereafter engage in such practice within this city, 'shall, upon conviction thereof, be sul ject to a penalty of !?25 for each and every offense, to be recovered as other fines and penalties for violation of the ordinances of this city. Be it further ordained. That any per son who shall suffer or permit any other person or persons to engage in snch fighting of cocks on his, her or their premises, or at any place occupied by them or under their control, shall be subject to a like penalty for each of fense. And any fighting of cocks as aforesaid within said city, being proved shall be accepted as prima facie evi dence against the owner or occupant of the premises wherever such fighting takes place. This ordinance shall take effect and be in ftrce from and after the 1st day of April, 1879. The ayes and noes were called, the rules were suspended, the ordinance put upon its three readings and passed, Alderman Tatem casting the only vote against it. The Alderman Scott also introduced the following ordinance, which passed its three readings under the suspension of the rules, and was ordered to be re corded : AN ORDINANCE IN RELATION TO TRAMPS. Be it ordained by the Board of Alder men of the City of Charlotte: That hereafter any person coming into this city, whether with the intention of re maining, or merely as a "tramp" or temporary sojourner, and who, being without visible means of support, shall attempt to beg his way, or shall be found skulking about the premises of any citizen, or shall be shown to have stolen his transportation to this city by secreting himself about the cars or trains of any railroad leading to the city, or who shall be proven to be acting as a vagrant or tramp, and does not show in a satisfactory manner his hon esty of imrpose, or otherwise disprove presumption that he is a vagrant or tramp, as aforesaid, shall be taken to be one of the army of tramps, and shall be subject to a fine not to exceed 30 and imprisonment not to exceed thirty davs, at the discretion of the mayor; anil that he be placed at work on the public streets of the1 city under super vision of the superintendent of streets. The ordinance, which prohibits any person from depositing the carcass of any animal on the streets was modified so as to give one-half of the fine for such offense to the informer. The board also instructed the marshal to consider dead fowls as falling under this head. , In this connection, Alderman, Moore, chairman of the sanitary committee, called the attention of the mayor to the fact that this was the time to begin fwo tli ft saiiitarv regulations in relation to cleaning up premises, open ing out ditches, etc. He said that al ready disagreeable odors had been no ticed, and that unless the proper steps 4-..Vr. Stevens, at.3 o'clock yesterday morning. --j services at residence corner 10th and Cemetery Avenue, this morning at 9 o'clock.: - A Frightful Death. Death yesterday overtook Mr. Thos, Neal, a young man of Sharon township, under shocking circumstances. The youth, aged about seventeen years, a son of the late Wm. Neal, had been plowing during the morning, and after dinner started to the field to resume his work, riding a spirited horse which had on him only the plow gears. About a hundred yards from the house, up the public road, the horse took fright, turn ed around and went running back down the road. The young man was thrown, his feet catching in the gears, and a moment later, his sister, standing on the piazza, saw the animal shoot past the house at fearful speed, and heard with horror the frantic shrieks of her unfor tunate brother as he was dragged along the highway and tossed from side to side. From the residence of Mr. Edgar H. AValker, toward which the horse was going, the road is perfectly straight for some distance in the direction of Mrs. Neal's, and Mr. Walker, standing in front of his lot, saw the riderless horse charging toward him and soon discern ed the form dangling by his side. Call ing a colored man to his assistance, the two placed themselves across the road, and springing at the affrighted horse as he reached them, they threw him upon the fence on the side of the road and held him fast. The foot of young Neal was disengaged from the chain which had held it, but his release came all too late. He gasped thrice and died. The horse had run with him half a mile, and the face and bodv were shock ingly bruisad and mutilated. The skull was broken above the left eye and again behind the left ear : the nose had been split in twain; the clothes had been torn from the upper portion of the body, and from the waist to the neck there remained hardly a square inch of skin. What agony he must have en dured during the few brief moments while dashing helplessly along by the horse's side, can never be known nor imagined. The tragic affair created intense com motion in the neighborhood, as the news of it spread from house to house, and the grief of the mother and sisters of the young man is perfectly uncon- ironaoie. m their great and sudden affliction an affliction rendered doubly severe by its suddenness and its shock ing character the family have the pro foundest sympathy of the entire com munity.
