The action of the board of aldermen in retaining the extra police force is generally endorsed. Several merchants were receiving large supplies of spring goods yesterday. They look for a good , trade during the coming season. Mr. Rookehas just placet! upon the lake in Elmwood eemetery .two beauti fuly, snow-white Sebastopol geese. They came from, New, jtlampabire. " The enlargement of the jurisdiction of magistrates doesn't seem to have had any appreciable effect in increasing their business in this city. It is reported among the mining peo ple here that the largest sale of mining property ever made in the State is pend ing in Davidson county. Yesterday a negro man employed at the Air-Line depot as a car coupler got caught between two of the cars and had his leg broken above the knee. The Observer has received an invi tation from Messrs. G. T. Stronach and Ilussey & Jordan to attend a "dinner harbecue" at Swift Creek, Wake county, on the 1st of May. Tlie recent warm weather brought t lie snakes from their winter quarters. A party of ladies encountered one a few evenings since on One of the main streets. It still lives. If tramps read the newspapers they will gi ve C harlotte a wide berth. Thirty days on the streets ! This is more work than many of them ever did in the whole course of their lives. The keeper 'of Elmwood cemetery wishes it said that any one desiring to visit the old cemetery in rear of the First Presbvterian church, now since the stile has' been taken down, can find keys at each of the city drug stores and at Tiddy's book store. street Commissioner Hunter has completed two substantial culverts at the intersection of Tryon and Kinth streets, one on the north and the other on the east side. The improvement is very marked, as those who have occa sion to drive along there happen to know. W. II. It is singular, too. to notice How confident some are of their walk ing abilities. "Rejoicing as a strons? man to run a race." now ha irmiio tiio expression and signiricance it ever had before. No doubt a score of men 'nnii be found in Charlotte who would un dertake a match of the matter is too young men went ut to iiie i ace iracK sunaay and tried their speed around the circle, and two more went out Mondav morning. The fastest time yet made is a half mile in minutes, 55 seconds. If Charlotte had Gilmore's Garden she wnnld havp w alkincr match next week She ma v ave one even without this. Fhe Pioneers and Their Horses. At a meeting of the Pioneer lire com any, held last night, a trade was closed with Mr. J. W. Wads worth for one pair of his iron-trrevs. The horses were litched to the engine vesterdav after noon and driven over different parts of the city, up hill and down, for the pur pose of testing their speed and endur ance and learning how they worked together. The horses gave entire satis faction and will be taken charge of by tne company to-dav. A committee was appointed to so advise Mr. Wadsworth and also to collect up the subscriptions made for the purchase of the horses, and this canvass for collections will be gin to-day. The horses cost the compa ny $2 to, and in addition to this there is the expense of preparing stables for them in the engine house, buying har ness and putting a tongue, seat for driver, &c.,on the engine ; but the mem bers of the company expect to be able to defray all these expenses, out of the subscriptions, without the necessity of calling upon the city government for assistance. 4 Breaking- tlie Caffs. The board of aldermen has emphati cally put its foot down on the practice of cock fighting within the corporate limits a practice which had be come so prevalent in the citv as to cause much unfavorable comment at home and abroad. The ordinance goes into effect on the 1st dav of April. Its introduction in the meeting day before yesterday after noon was evidently a surprise to most of the members. Some ot them exhibit ed profound and pitiable ignorance on the whole subject and wanted Alder man Scott to explain certain phraseol ogy or the pit used oy him, out inis gentleman retorted by calling for the ayes and noes on the vote, lhe call was sustained and to speak figuratively, fho li'np w;ia nn A rirv father mav cri aroun3 the back way, or stand in a dis tant window and view the bloody con test, but is hardly ever willing to put himself on record as endorsing the sport. But it is probably unfair to sup pose that any who voted "aye" on the ordinance were bulldozed or wrould have voted otherwise under any cir cumstances. It is sufficient to know that cock-fighting has been forbidden in Charlotte by its board of aldermen with only one dissenting vote. Railroad Notes. "NTnrth Carolina has nineteen railroads that are either wholly or partly within her borders, the aggregate length of which, in the State, is about 1,465 miles. The Sunday law, just made by the T.ecrislar.nre. nrovides aerainst the load ing of freights and the running of trains on the sabbath between sunrise ana sundown. It does not apply to mail trains. A Charlotte railroad man walked through the Swananoa tunnel on the Western North uaroiina iwuiroau wiui- : the last few days. lie reports that Mai Wilson is now doinsr ramd work clearing out the tunnel preparatory to iving the tracK. As the Carolina Central local freight , m 1 ' LI nnlnnnJ was on the up trio ouimay, cwuibu train hand was lost. At the first station after he was missed the section-master ,-as enr. back and found the darKey sitting by the side of the road. He ex plained that he naa unaeruiKeu iu gvi, down to the rear platform of the ca boose car, from the top, when .the train, which was' running twenty miles an hour, gave a little jerk and snot mm on, headf tremost, upon the cross-ties. When he had finished his story the darkey rubbed his head again, followed the section-master back to the train, got on and resumed business. Bemoved on a Requisition. Sheriff Cole, of Darlington, S. C ar rived in the city, yesterday, accompa nied by another county officer, with a requisition from Governor Simpson for Dozier Flinn alios E. G. Smith, who is charged with being one of a band of negroes who attempted two years ago to burn the town of Darlington. There were eight or ten in me gang, auu wui of these were captured and convicted in the courts. Flinn came to Mecklen burg, and was caught jaboutf two weeks ago. As noted by The Observer at the time, a letter which he wrote from this county to friends at home was the f fiio .iiioAAVArv of his where- abouts and identity. When the South Carolina officers went to the jail yester day morning they at once recognized E. G. Smith, of Mecklenburg, as Dozier Flinn, of Darlington, and the recogni tion was mutual. The officers left the city yesterday at noon with Flinn heavily shackled. It is believed that he knows and can be induced to tell the whereabouts of the remainder of the gang whft escaped with him. Sheriff Alexander will get a reward of 050 for the arrest. Personal. J udge Kerr's condition was not ma terially changed yesterday. The phy sicians report his symptoms more favor able. His wife arrived in the city yes terday morning and is now at his bed side. . . Mr. Heber Dunham, representing a company at the North recently organ ized for the purpose of operating a method of reducing sulphuret ores, has been in the city and vicinity four or five days, examining the mining pros pects, lie said last night, just before his return, that he had been much pleased, and would recommend to the company he represents to put up works near Charlotte. Maj. Jas. C. McRae, a prominent citi zen of Fayetteville, was in the city yes terday. State Auditor Love was registered at the Central Hotel yesterday. Mr. J. S. Davant, general freight agent of the Port Royal Kailroad, left the city yesterday morning, after a two days, visit to his old friends. Mr. Walter T. Miller, one of the old est and wealthiest cotton buyers in New York, was in the city yester day. He has several warm friends among the cotton men of Charlotte, 20th of May Celebration A Meeting of Citizens Proposed. During the last few days the subject of the annual celebration of the 20th of May has been discussed a good deal among our citizens. The celebration of the day has become one of the cus toms of the place a custom which the citizens of Mecklenburg will not allow to fall into disuse. It has been a notice able fact, however, ever since the cus tom was inaugurated, that the citizens of the town have always had to take the management of it" into their own hands. This ought not to be so, and the town people are particularly anxi ous that it should not be. The occasion is one in which the entire State should feel a keen interest. Taking this view of the occasion and its significance, a number of citizens who have tak en an interest in the matter, have decided to ask the citizens of Mecklen burg to meet in the court house in this city at 12 o'clock on Saturday, the 29th of the present month, and make the necessary preparations for the due oh servance of the day, that the people of the both and county meet on that day and combine their efforts to render the celebration worthy of the occasion ; let the firemen, military companies and all other organizations be represented. Remember the day Saturday the 29th of March. No greater guarantee of the excellence of Dr. Bull's Cough Syrup could be furnished than that It Is recommended by all the leading druggists.
