Mr. Randolph traced the animal towards town and finally found it with out bridle and saddle, just on the out skirts of the city. The same night the animal was stolen, a negro disappeared from the neighborhood. Mr. Randolph was in the city all day yesterday in search of the supposed thief, but the most diligent inquiry of the police fail ed to discover his presence or where abouts. Mr. Randolph accordingly loses a saddle and bridle. THE MAIOUALI1, Col. Jhn E. Brawn for the Place. To the Editor of The Observer: As the time is near at hand when we will be called upon to vote for some worthy citizen for mayor of our city, we desire to suggest the name of Col. itleman. Of the men. two are charged with murder Logan Hoover lor shooting a negro woman at a frolic about two months ago, and Jesse Wal ton, charged with complicity in the murder of the negro who was found dead on the railroad near the countv poor house. Another character of some prominence is Adam Johnson. known as the Liberian negro, charered with collecting funds for the proposed expedition and appropriating them to ns own use. Besides Ben Lane, whose case was recently acted upon by the Supreme Court, the decision being af firmed, the remainder are held for trial for larceny or some minor offences. Railroad Note. Railroad men complain that Char lotte is the only place of its size on any of the lines that has no policemen at the depots on the arrival of trains. Are they not oftener needed there than up town V There is serious talk of a chance of schedule on the through lines about the loth ot April, ihe report is that the night trains from the north will arrive earlier and leave later. On one of the Georgia railroads a re frigerator car makes trips every other day, supplying each station along the line with tresh meats, tropical fruits. &c. It is a new enterprise and might be made to pay on some of our roads. The car could be attached to freight trains so as to stop long enough at each station to fill all orders. AVe learn upon crood authority that the management of the Charlotte. Co lumbia & Augusta Railroad propose to open an eating house at an early day at Fine House, and to have it run by a Kichmond man. The eating house is at present at Graniteville. Another mail agent has fallen umter the retrenchment rule of the postorlice department. This time it is Mr. YV. A. iMnith on the run irom llmmgton to Charlotte. The nan to Handle tbe money. To the Editor of The Observer: - From the communication in your paper thii hwrning signed "Enquirer," it seems that what this city needs is a mayor who can take care of and ac count for all the funds levied and col lected for taxes. To fill this bill entire ty, there is one whom we will pit against the world one who has made his own mark in the handling of money, and now owns some valuable real estate, which he, like the majority of tax-payers, wants protected, improved and lightty taxed.- To handle, manage and account, faithfully, honestly and prudently,-for all money or bonds put in nis charge, we vouch lor our man ; all that is necessary for his election is a little help from the other wrards, for we intend to give our man, Col. J. II. Baker, a big vote in Ward No. 2. Charlotte, N. C, March 26th. Worthy to Receive the Cloak, of Honor To the Editor of The Observer: As nominations are in order for the mayoralty of the city of Charlotte at the approaching election, we beg leave to say that there is . none more worthy to receive the cloak of honor for the important trust than our young towns man, E. K'P. Osborne. This being the wish of many who have already ex pressed themselves in favor of this worthy young man, we wish in this mornings issue to bring his name to the front. Many Citizens. One in Every Respect Qualified and Worthy. To the Editor of The Observer: Since the mayoralty has become a subject of general discussion, and sev eral names have been suggested in your paper, we beg leave in that connection to mention for the consideration of the voters of Charlotte the name of Maj. W. W. Flemming, who is in every re spect qualified for and worthy of the position. Citizens. Strike Antony Factory Haads. Three weeks ago tne owners of the old Woodlawn cotton nulla served a i notice of a reduction of 10 per cent tip- on their operatives, ana Tuesday, the time at wluch the redaction took effect, the weavers struck, all except two or three leaving the factory in a body. The owners gave them notice to return to work next morning or quit their quarters in the evening, and yesterday morning all came back except a few of the ring-leaders wrho remained away until noon, when they, too, returned. These, however, were met with the in formation that their services were no longer needed, and that they might seek work elsewhere. Occurrences of this character are very unusual in this section of country, and all concerned are to be congratulated that this has resulted in such unimpor tant consequences. Blind Torai has been asked to give a benefit, at Columbus, Ga., his old home, for a colored church which is being built thei e. At last reports, Mr. Barrymore.who was shot at Marshal, Texas, at the time when Porter was killed, was in a very critical condition. It is quite evident that the dramatic season is very nearly over. Pew or no companies are starting South, and all that we shall see between now and au tumn are those that will be returning Northward. Nothing has been heard for three or four years of the Wildman troupe, which used to impose upon Charlotte when we were young. Mr. F. C. Bangs, who made such a nrnfnnnd imDression in Charlotte as Mark Anthony, began a week's engage ment as Virginius, at the Walnut Street Tbeatrej Philadelphia, last Monday night, and the intelligent and highly critical Times, of Tuesday, says of the manner in which he played it: "Mr. Bangs gave a very well studied and highly impassioned impersonation of the title character. He is an actor of the old school and clings very closely to the old heroic methods. That the old school still has its admirers was shown by the marked favor with which all the strong scenes were received. At times the audience was uproarious in armbinse and Mr. Bancs was called be fore the curtain with hearty unanimity. The general support was good and the performance clean and impressive. Mr. Bangs will play Virginius again this evening." The Trader in Brass Filing; Released Yesterday the young man Smart who was recently confined in the county jail for selling brass filings for gold dust to several persons in South Caro lina, was released from confinement. This is the result of a compromise made with the injured parties, through their attorneys in this citv, bv the father of the young man, who has been in the city for several days trying to effect the arrangement. It seems that the young man on starting out upon his plan of fraud assumed the initials of his father, L. II., his own name be ing T. M. Smart. The scheme could have been worked very successfully had he left the country as soon as he dis posed of the brass, that is, before it could have been subjected to the test of the crucible. The fraud was decidedly a clever one, and could not have been detected except by experts. Brass filings bear a striking resemblance to the gold dust as it is obtained from the mines in the western part of the State, and it is 'said that by way of making the deception more complete, the young man had mixed with it a few grains of quartz, of the kind in which gold is fre quently found imbeded.so that had sus picions been aroused by the lack of re semblance the appearance of the few grains of quartz would have allayed all fears. - Death of ITIrs. Dora. Greg-ory. At 4 o'clock yesterday morning Mrs. Dora Gregory, "wife of Mr. W. II. II. Gregory, died at her home of erysipelas, after a very painful illness. She breath ed her last surrounded by the surviving members of her family who had been called to her bedside. It had been known for several days that it would hardly be possible for her to recover, and sorrowing hearts awaited with painful solicitude the results of the disease, whose progress willing hands could not arrest. The loss of Mrs. Gregorv is not only sorely felt in her own household, but is universally re gretted in Charlotte. Of a cheerful, hopeful and happy disposition, she bore the trials ot lite with grace and pa tience, and her broad sympathy enlist ed her labors in many good works in which her services were always valua ble. She was scarcely thirty-five years of use. and leaves three small children. Her remains were taken last night on a special train to V umington, her old home and birthplace, for interment, and were accompanied by her broth er. Mr. James Brown, Mr. anu mis. .j. E. Lippitt and the members of her family, with a few friends. The train will arrive in llmington to-tiay, ana the funeral will take place at 4 o clock to-morrow afternoon.
