The deed was done with a small pocket-knife, and although the jugular vein was not severed, still a wound was inflicted from which he came near bleeding to death. Mr. Ed wards has been somewhat deranged for several weeks, and once before' made an attempt to take his lite. A Sampson county correspondent of the Wilmington Sun writes of the death, in that county, on the 27th ult of Mrs. Martha Spell, and that it is the general belief that she was poisoned by her husband. T. Spell, and her death ' was premeditated, or words to that effect. Spell was present when the investigation began, but see ing the evidences of his guilt rapidly accumulating, he fled, and has not yet been apprehended. The stomach of the dead woman has been sent to Professor Redd, at the University, for an analysis of its contents. It is believed that his investigation will reveal, the presence of strychnine.
