has been notified by the Secretary of
War to nominate a cadet for appoint
ment at West Point. In order to give

Earp, of Johnston county, lost his house,
storehouse, stable and barn by fire yes-

portion of the furniture. In Mark's
Creek township, in this county, Frank
Ferrell's house and outhouses were
burnt to the ground. His little children
were saved by. a friend who eame up
just in time to save them.
Morganton Blade: A. M. Haskin and
K. L, Page, both discharged Yankee sol
diers, who married in this county, pack
ed their knapsacks and marched away

for themselves. Haskin's wife, we hear,
has been confined to her bed with rheu

Elizabeth City Carolinian: Judge
Avery insisted that it was, and is the
duty of the county commissioners to
build a court house, to furnish proptr
accommodations tor the courts and
county officers, and security for the
countv records. He instructed the
grand' jury to indict them for these
omissions.

ney and Lelia Robey recently establish

Enfield (N. C.) special of the 5th to
the Richmond Dispatch : The residence
of J. E. O'Hara, colored, Republican
candidate for Congress in this district,
and the contestant lor Tlon. Mr. Kitch
en's seat in the Forty-sixth Congress,
on the suburb's of this town, w;s "total
ly destroyed by fire to-day at noon, to-
f;ether with his furniture, valuable li
rary, &c. His wife barely escaped
with her life. The loss is insinuated at

i;ig last, Mr. Jas Eclwaiils, a respecta
ble citizen of Anson county, who lives
about four miles from Olive .Branch,
in this coanty, made an unsuccessful
attempt to commit suicide, but cutting
his throat. The deed was done with a
small pocket-knife, and although the
jugular vein was not severed, still a
wound was inflicted from which he
came near bleeding to death. Mr. Ed
wards has been somewhat deranged for
several weeks, and once before' made
an attempt to take his lite.
A Sampson county correspondent of
the Wilmington Sun writes of the
death, in that county, on the 27th ult
of Mrs. Martha Spell, and that it is the
general belief that she was poisoned by
her husband. Mi's. Spelt was sick and
her husband went to a doctor, who pre-

Reaching home he gave his wife a li
quid, telling her the quantity the doc
tor had prescribed, as a dose, and kh&i

corpse. The above facts, -.along with
other suspicious circumstances, being
reported, to the coroner, hasumraoned a
jury.who assembled at the late resi
dence of the deceased -Monday morning
last, and rendered a verdict that " Mrs.
Martha Spell came tocher' death from
the effects rof oisoiJt swallowed at the
instance of Jieiv husband, W. T. Spell,
and her death ' was premeditated, or
words to that effect. Spell was present
when the investigation began, but see
ing the evidences of his guilt rapidly
accumulating, he fled, and has not yet
been apprehended. The stomach of the
dead woman has been sent to Professor
Redd, at the University, for an analysis
of its contents. It is believed that his
investigation will reveal, the presence
of strychnine.
