Tne Prices of 1831. From ah ''-old paper, issued in Char lotte in October, 1831, we make a few extracts from the market reports. which are of interest as compared with those of to-day, published in The Ob server of tfiis morning. It is a little singular that in many of the articles tne prices are so nearly the same. Here are a few of the articles with the prices on the Fayetteville market: Bacon 9a 10: cotlee, 14al5: cotton, 8a8M; corn, 40; flour, 4a4); lard, 9al0; molasses, 32a35; oats, 28a30; wheat, 75; sugar, I prime, 9, and lump, I5a20. The great est ainerence is in tne price or peacn and apple brandy, the one being 50 and the other 40. In Charleston, at the same date, prices ranged from 1 to 3 per cent. higher. Most of the business of this section, at that time, was done in Char leston. Po liceman Famngton reports that Mason was drinking, and. intact, was so drunk that he (the policeman) had to take him home. He says he found Mason near the court house, holding an argument wiui tne pump relative to his beinsr al lowed to pass that point. The police men further state that Mason was seen to stagger and fall two or three times, and they have no doubt that he broke the bone of his arm in this way. They would . not have, felt the necessity of thus exposing him had he not misrepre sented the facts in the case, thereby re- necting upon tnein in their omcial ca pacity. i i In tbe Court. They nave had several hearings before the magis trate, but have repeatedly been recom mitted in the. hope that evidence might be adduced which would involve other parties. They had a final hearing yes terday and were each ordered to give bond for their appearance at the next term of the Superior Court. Failing to give bona tnev were returned to jail. Our lady readers who have not tested the magic properties of borax, says an exchange, have been losing a great help and comtort. It once used, you will never be without a bottle on your toilet table. It removes the stam and dirt from . the the hands better than soap, and at the same time softens and smooths the skin. It is splendid for washing the hair, and will, without in jury, cleanse brushes and combs m a lew moments. For washing purposes it saves both soap and labor. It will extract the dirt from articles of delicate texture without rubbing, it being ne cessary to put the articles m a solution of borax over night, and will need only to be rinsed in the morning. Two ta- blespoonfuls of pulverized borax dis solved in a quart of water, to which wa ter may be added to cover a pair of blan kets, will cleanse them beautifully. It also saves great labor m washing paints. 'Tis said to drive away ants and roaches if sprinkled on the shelves of safes or pantries. "Patriotism and Charilf." To the Editor of The Observer: This is the heading of an article that appeared in yesterday morning's paper, and that I endorse as every word true. I do hope that our people will manifest their liberality and celebrate the 20th of May in a way that will show the patriotism of our people on that day that ought never to be forgotten by North Carolinians. But I do hope they will not forget our poor that we al ways have among us. There are some impostors. I am sure, that obtain some of the poor funds by deception, but the systematic plan on w7hicn tne renei so ciety has been organized prevents much or that, Decause tne committees visit all and know generally to whom they distribute alma. In the last two days, I have visited some twelve or hlteen families, including forty or fifty per sons, and if I have ever had my heart moved, it has been during these visits to some of those families. I will men tion one especially in which I found a .man with, a .wife . and several small children. The wife had been sick for twelve -months.: and about four weeks ago she partially recovered in the prov idence ot God, lust in time to wait on her husband, who was taken down with the typhoid fever. He is a hard -working and rindustrious man, but all nis savines nave ueeu caiisiuslbu, so that it is a family literally with noth ing. 1 had a small amount on nanci irom tne reiiei society, ana wnen a toia him I could give him with it medicine and nrovisionsk he Durst into tears and modestlv and reluctantly received the needed help. But what I gave can not last them long, and now, while I Write. I have calls for help and visits from three families; I am going, and trust in God the good people of the city of Charlotte will supply us witn some thing to help these poor creatures.
