Capt Alexander, of the Grays, came up yesterday to say that his company does not favor the idea of consolidation and will certainly not disband under any circumstances. lie says that al though the company is small, it is in good condition, and lias recently re ceived several valuable acquisitions. At a recent meeting, Mr. Edmond Ba con, formerly captain of the Spartan burg Rifles, was elected first lieutenant and C. W. Alexander, late colonel of the Second Regiment, was chosen second lieutenant. The company now has thir ty men in good standing, and expects to have a full turnout on the 20th. Concert To-Night. The tickets for the Gounod club's concert to-night will be put on sale at the Central Hotel cigar stand and at Tiddy's book store this morning. The price of general admission is 50 cents ; reserved seats in the first row of the balcony, 75 cents. The programme of the evening is a very attractive one in deed, containing the names of those who represent the best musical talent of the city, and who have often delight ed Charlotte audiences. They have never appeared to better advantage than they will this evening, having en joyed for months the superior training at lrof. liiaez. we trust they win he greeted by a full house. It ail road Notes. Mr. H. W. Sibley, president of the At lanta & Charlotte Air-Line, arrived in the city with his family, yesterday, and after a short stay at the depot, left on a special train for Atlanta, accompanied by Col. Foreacrergeneral manager. Work on the Winston and Salem & MooresvUle Railroad is progressing very satisfactorily , indeed. It is given out now that it will be completed to Mocks ville by the last of August. A ne -a.ir-JLiine, witn us ciiaracierisuc enterprise, is now advertising to carry passengers to Atlanta on the 15th, to hear Henry Ward Beecher lecture, for one fare for the round trip. It is said that the Richmond & Dan ville Railroad has printed new sched ules which may be put into operation next Sunday, though the time nas not been definitely nxed. According to tuis schedule the night train will leave about , a fhalf hour later, that is, 8.45 a. m and arrive about 11.25 p. mM an half hour earlier than, at present. MM I Indian, Itenaalna and Relic Excavat- ed. For some time past Capt. Sage, super intendent of the road-bed of the At lanta & CharlQtte Air Line Railroad, with a force of. workmen has been en gaged in filling up the trestle at Paw Creek bridge, about six miles from the city, digging into a hill on the west side of the roaa to procure me uirt iur mis purpose. Mr, William Dobsbnl of Philadelphia who, by the-way, was on a visit Jiere recently writes to an acquaintance in this city asking if he could rent, in or around Charlotte, a room 24x30 or 82 feet, suitable for machinery, having about three-horse steam or water-power. The SlnipMom mining Com pan-. We have received from the Simpson mining company a pamphlet contain ing interesting certificates of assays, and other statistics of the Simpson mine, in Clear Creek township, this county, about ten miles from Charlotte. The mine with six hundred acres of land was purchased by Boston capital ists several months ago, and on the 2d of April the organization of the compa ny was completed. The principal office is in Charlotte, with a branch office at 46 Devonshire street, Boston. . In February, Mr. W. L Smart, a min ing expert of Boston, made a thorough examination of the mine, and his report is published in the pamphlet referred to. He gives a full description of the veins, their composition, number, &cn and concludes by saying that if the mine doesn't pay handsomely it will be the fault of the management. In the course of the report he makes the following estimates, from which information valuable to the mining in terest of this section may be derived : "An average of all the ore from this property, will, in my opinion, run from $30 to 640 per ton, but I will base my estimate at $20 per ton a figure less than the assay of the poorest ore that has at the present time been taken out. This ore can be taken from the mine, milled and all other expenses paid at a cost of $5.00 per ton, (which is a very large estimate,) this will leave a net profit of $15.00 per ton. Now if your mine was well opened so that stop mg could commence on the ore, from a two-foot crevice, you would be able to take out fifty tons in twenty-four hours, at least, which would give a profit of $750 a day. I have made an estimate of this one vein for three thousand feet, allowing that the ore body is one foot wide, and should only reach the depth now attained.fifty feet, I make it from ten to fifteen thousand tons which can be extracted at once, and would net in cash $150,000 profit. It shows if you had a twenty stamp mill, with all the modern im provements, which can be built upon the ground nt a cost of about $15,000, you would have ore enough on the property at a depth only of fifty feet to run your mills lor several years at a capacity ot ntty tons per day. THE WIFE ABDI CTIOX. Jeffernou in Reply to SampnonS ter. To the Editor of The Observer: In your paper of to-dav I see a letter from J. P. Sampson in answer to a state ment furnished by me to Tiie Observer last week, in reference to the abduction ot my wife from her home in this city by said Sampson. As the writenxf the letter does little more than enter a gen eral denial of the charge which I have made against him, there is little left for me to answer: Out some points made by him may be alluded to here. As to his letters of recommendation, the gentle men who wrote them cannot be ac countable for Sampson's conduct at a time subsequent to their writing, and besides, recommendations, as is well known, frequently fall into very bad hands. As to the grounds of my charge against Sampson I have to say that I have good reasons for believing that he visited my house more than once during his stav here, and certainly he was seen with my wife upon the streets twice. He knows that I remonstrated with him about his attentions to her, and it is a known fact that mine is not the only house in Charlotte where he made himself too familiar. He will hardly deny having told my wife that she was too good for me, and this being the case he is at least liable to tne charge or hav ing poisoned her mind against me, even if he did not decoy her from home. As to this last, however, I claim to have sufficient ground for that charge in the fact that he visited my house clandes tinely during my absence, turned my wife against me, ana that he haa scarce ly gotten out of the city before she fol lowed in the same direction. Sampson claimed to be a phrenologist and a for tune-teller. Among other things he told her that she would travel, and this Erophecy, I know to my sorrow has een verified.
