The large body of distinguished ministers and elders Will represent a church in the strictest sense of the word, Calvinistic in doctrine, and probably the most thoroughly Cal vinistic church in the United States. The Southern Presbyterian Church, in fact, exists as much because-of an- in tense conservatism as regards distinc tive doctrine as because of the Eras tianism which in 1861 gave the South ern Presbyterians , notice that union with their brethren of the North was only thenceforth practicable or possi ble by heartr subscription to the doc- trine of loyalty and by servile subjectiv ity to the pronunciamentos of the civil government regulating the consciences of men. .. .r fg ff t is generally conceded to be f extremely1 11 . :tv. - 4-- the relations' meii sustain to the Deity,' is retained and taught by comparatively few of the churches which adhere to thq Presbyterian polity! f iThere I are atnnt. arH mnHorafj rtalviniofja 1-kAf.urctAn. whom there is the widest indifference of views on the subject" of - the extent of the atonement of Jesus Christ and oth- differences existed from the planting of tne nrsc cnurcnes in new x orK, jn ew Jersey. There are now 12 synods, 64 presbyteries," 1,117 ministers and li centiates, 145 candidates for ihe minis try, 1,878 churches, 528 elders, 3,452 deacons, 11478 communicants and 68, 121 Sunday school children, showing ah increase of churches and membership of oyer fifty per cent The contributions to all objects reported last year were $1,030,971. The Church has two fine theological seminaries, one in Virginia and the other in South Carolina, and a school for preparing colored men to preach the gospel, at Tuskaloosa, Ala. .Many of the most remarkable and distinguished clergymen of the United States have been connected with the Presbyterian Church in the Southern States, and to-day the roll call of the General Assembly which meets in Lou teyiUe Thursday will reveal a fine array of distinguished names men who not only think in the deep grooves of the Calvinistic system, but who can make such tough topics as -grace and free wilL" predestination and election, the eternal decrees, &c, attractive by their grace and eloquence of presentation. The Geneva theology compels deep thinking on the part of its votaries. It is a " hard and cruel system " according to some people, but probably they have not wrestled sufficiently with its mer its. It should be remembered, too, that the author of that system suffered ex cruciating agony, continually, from eight different diseases which had cap tured his body. The old Germans, in fact, used to say. uncharitably, that they would rather go to hell with Be za than to heaven with Calvin," be cause the latters temper was so bad. His system, however, is a marvel of in genuity and granitic thought, andtthe fact that it has- left its impress,-with more or less distinctness, . on he sym bols of so many-churches proves its monumental nature. . ; ; ;z , - , i Aitliough every year there is more or less talk of the re-union of the North ern and Southern Presbyterians, it is not likely that sucli j a consummation will be witnessed for sometime. About ten years ago the former co-religionists SliSi6 Southern Presbyterians in i the North, in afit of ipolitical' enthusiasm; jomed hands with the new school body, whose doctrines they, had formally con demned thirty years before. The Sou thern Presbyterian Church, therefore, remains doctrinally here its ministers and elders stood in -1888; . while their SS- i2 haye undergone a seemingly radical doctrinal change. t r t ; - .V- Tb Belligerent fionb Ctroliuiaiw.
