BEECHES. 05 THE SOUTH.
TM Moral Grandeur of the Southern
People Beecher Loves Them All.
' From Beecher's Sunday Sermon.
This great nation was divided by an
invisible line, morally visible enough,
on both sides of which the North and
South had stood in bloody antagonism
foToflve terrible years. In my own
judgment, when I consider human na
ture, when I consider that a proud peo
ple have seen themselves emptied out
of power, their political existence al
most annihilated, their property swept
out of their hands as by a consuming
flame, the ascendancy of the despised
slave established over them by what
was to him a foreign arm, I should not
haye wondered if there had been ten
times the resistance that there has been
to reconstructive measures.
. Never in history has a people borne
so. much with so much patience, gal
lantry and patriotism a spectacle of
moral grandeur and of substantial good
intent and honor in those who have
been so terrifically scourged which is
without parallel The spirit which
would set the North against the South,
the East against the West, the Germans
against thei -old Puritans or the old
Puritans against the Germans, the
whites against the blacks or the blacks
against the whites, is not only political
ly criminal, but it is absolutely subver
sive" -of the fundamental instincts of
humanity. There is yet the power and
the honor in this country to hold men
together in charity and unity. When
it was the need of the untempered
North to be nerved to resist the arro
gance of plantation domination I was
not wanting. yiiat .we need now is
loveV charity, union, I speak again.
Though-1 fcatslaVeryI did not hate
the slaveholder. I loved him and I
still love him. - I love all 'mankind, iot
only for what they are, but for what
they are going to be.
