FROM WASHINGTON. 1 he Question of Congressional Adjourn ment Four Per Cent. Specula tions The All-Night Session of the House. Special Dispatch to the Baltimore, Sun.j Washington, May 25. A Democrat ic Senator, in conversation as to the prospects of a final adjournment, said he had noticed that all the presidential candidates in the Senate wej-e either indifferent as to the length of the ses sion or were actively in favor of pro tracting it. What of personal benefit these aspirants expect to gain by a con tinuation of the session cannot be imagined. THE SPECULATIVE JlANJA, The sale of the ten-dollar four per cent, certificates has been the means of putting into the hands of speculators throughout the country a great many thousand dollars, and it has been sug gested that there is good reason why the government should not have the benefit of this instead of the specula tors. The mania for buying these cer tificates to speculate in seized such hold of . the treasury clerks last week that many of. them were scarcely at their desks at all, and finally it was found necessary to remind them of the law forbidding treasury employees to deal in government securities, it is some what queer that from the time of the first loan of the war down to this dav all the legislation in respect to the gov ernment iinances lias naa tne enect to encourage and foster speculation, and in many instances enormous sums have gone into the pockets of individuals . which might just as well have been ijiaved to the treasury. THE ALL-NIGHT PERFORMANCE. The House sat in . continuous session from noon Friday till 9 o'clock on Sat urday ' morning. T Seventeen hours of this time was consumed in filibustering bv the Benublicans because the Dpmiv crats would not permit a certain amend ment to the Warner silver bill to be vor ted on. Tberwhole performance was eauallv sillv and absurd on both sidm. Both Republicans and Democrats knew tnat the amendment would not be adopted, and that it could be disposed " of in a very few minutes, and yet, be cause neither one side nor the other would give up, the undignified squab- Die went on tnrougn tne whole night, mere was no( excuse .tor the perrorm ance, and the Democrats, finally , com mg' to this conclusion:, permitted the amendment to be offered, t There were several calls of the House in the course of the nisrhL attended bv . the visual scenes of uproar. Mr. McCook, of New York, when brought before the bar of the House, made nse of certain offen sive and disrespectful language toward j sjthe body of which he is a 'member, which he afterwards found expedient T' 16 retract and apologize for. Mr. Chit ,r v.tenden also got into a contrite niood vesterdav. and beeped nardon. nf tha -House for usingihe-profarre expletives with which. he srecentljr garnished his financial speeches. Selling Williams Whisky. Stopped Eev. J. H. Martin In Springfield Republican. When George W. W'illiams, the Char- eston millionaire, was a young man, le became a partner in a wholesale grocerv house in Augusta, lia. The sale of liquors was a leading feature and principal part oi the business ear ned on by the hrm. Ihe thing went on until the death of a man was traced to a barrel of whisky that had gone out from that establishment. Being well grounded in the principles of religion and temperance, Williams was shocked and distressed by the sad event, and determined to free himself from further complicity in the liquor traffic. He put his foot down on that branch of the Dusiness, ana aeciarea that no more lquor should be sold by the firm of which he was a member. Friends remonstrated, alleging that the house chiefly made its money through the sale of liquors' and that if this traffic were discontinued the concern would break. Williams stood firm, the sale of liquors was abandoned, but the busi ness of the house, instead of declining, liicreiiseu. wimanis aiierwara re moved to ChariestoriT and has been steadily prosperous, j until he ranks among the richest men of the South.
