Alexander -TrirrentineJ colored, has been in the service of "the firm of u W. Wriston & Co, ever since it was estab lished, over ayear RgQ, and waar regard edas aid intelhntj f aitlrf ul anrl trust worthy netrro. One of his duties was to charge the sodV fountain, which he has done regularly when it was iu use ever .since he has been in , the employ of the firm. He was i little late beginning the task yesterday morning, bat went about it as, usual. Between 8 and 9 o'clock persons standing near the door leading into the cellar of the store where Turrentinewast working with the fountain were shocked by an ex plosion, which resembled the sound caused by the falling of a heavy piece of timber. Dr. T. J. Moore, who was standing near the entrance to the cellar, ,wet down and found Turrentine lying near the fountain in a dying condition. As soon as an examination could be made, it was ascertained that the bones of his skull immediately around the eye had been badly broken and mashed in. He died in a very few minutes. The fountain had barst in the middle where it was encircled by a band, and from the surroundingcircumstances it was readi ly seen that the upper part of, it had struck Turrentine while he was stand ing over it. A mark on the joists above indicated that the upper part had been thrown against it, while the lower: por tion was forced in the other direction. Persons in he store distinctly felt the jar caused by a part Of the fountain striking the floor, ,; ; k . :. i t The explosion was, not loud enough to attract general attention in the street; but in a few minutes great excitement prevailed. The doors had finally to be closed and subsequently the body was removed to a house on Fifth street, where the cor.ojder'a inquest was held,. Only a few witnesses were examined and the facts' developed1 were substan tially those stated above. Mr. F. Ketis ter testified that he had recently been' working on the fountain and that he considered it perfectly safeand in reply to questions said that .he was an expert in such matters, haviaff- been working with soda fountains regularly for the past eight years. The jury ; rendered a verdict of death by the explosion of 'a. soda fountain. One of the firm of L. It. Wriston & Co., who carefully examined all the cir cumstances, gives this as an explanation of the accident; That Turrentine, being late in beginning his workjb-ad eharged the fountain very rapidly, subjectmg'it to sudden press we that he had just finished the process of "churning" the liquid bo as to mix the gas thoroughly in it, and was in the act of turning on more gas, when "the pressure becoming too great, the .fountain .burst at its weakest point where the upper and lower parts are joined together by a band: There is no way of telling how much pressure was on the fountain at the time of the occurrence. This is the fiist case of a soda foun tain bursting in Charlotte, and accidents of this sort are rare. Tax QuehUoUM Annwered.
