He was followed by Mr. N. Dumont,

future that this was but the beginning
of their life's work ; that upon the edu
cated colored man depended the eleva
tion of his race, a race without a his
tory, getting its tutelage from the most
active and accomplished people of
modern times ; that to these students
was charged the account of demonstrat-
ana whether it jb worthwaue to keep

to educate them. He pointedly advised
pointedly
them to independent lines of thought
and action, and a thorough self-reliance.
He was followed by Rev. JX J. San
ders, pastor of the Presbyterian church
(colored) of Wilmington, in a very hap
py speech in the course of which he
strongly advised the students to in all
cases take strong ground among the
colored people against migration, for,
said he, if we go out from the houses of

States, other agencies and laborers come

and correct logic and bore marks of
thoroueh study. His farewell to the

President Mattoon delivered to each
graduate his diploma, together with a
fine copy of the Bible, the gift of Mrs.
Mattoon, upon the conclusion of which
the Rev. Mr. Dorland, of Concord, de
livered the benediction. Large bou
quets and other presents were bestowed
upon the? graduates by their friends in
the audience. ' :

by the Charlotte Star Band at intervals

In accordance with a previous an
nouncement, the cadets of the Carolina
Military Institutegave an exhibition
the Central Hotel, yesterday afternoon.
Their appearance was the occasion of
the gathering of quite a large crowd of
spectators on the balcony of the hotel
and in the streets, and, the drill was
watched with keen interest The move
ments of the cadets, under Capt Wm.
Cain, were complimented on every
hand, especially by a number of old
soldiers, including many of our most
respected citizens, who know what good
drilling is. The execution of difficult
manoeuvres was frequently greeted with
