The mails cannot begin to keep pace with the vagaries of the weather. And this has its advan tages. On the days when we are being grilled our ejjanges chatter of cold, sleety rains, frosts, etc., and when we are pinched with our cold spell, then do the New York and Philadelphia dailies regale us with fervent tales of sunstrokes and aspiring thermometers. Thus does the weather of each day have its countertrrftant. j?os. Trans. McCiary to the f Special Dispatch to the Baltimore Sun.J Washington, June 9. The nomina tion of Secretary of War McCrary to be judge of the eighth judicial circuit will, it is not impossible under certain cir cumstances, be confirmed. But from present appearances no definite action is likely to be taken on it until it is known what is to become of the appro priation bills. It is known that Secre tary McCrary of course stands side by side with the President in refusing to consent that there shall be no military interference with the freedom of elec tions, and this being the case it would be somewhat strange if a Democratic Senate should be in haste to put him in an exalted judicial position, where he may be called to pass upon cases of grave importance growing out of this very issue. The views of Secretary Mc Crary, as published in these dispatches on the 31st ult are attracting great at tention among Senators now that his nomination for high judicial position is before the Senate. Secretary McCrary there declares for national supremacy and against State's rights to a degree which will satisfy the most extreme be lievers in and upholders of a centraliz ed government The Democratic par ty, as determined by its leaders here, will make for the future asithegreat issue btjf ore the country whether elec tions are to be conducted under the shadow of the bayonet. In the proces sion which marched to Willard's Hotel the other night to serenade Gen, 13 wing in honor of his nomination for Gover nor of Ohio, the one single transparen cy, which appeared to the popular heart and which called forth enthusiastic demonstrations of popular disapproval, was the ballot-box transfixed by the bayonet. This is an issue which eveiy man in all the broad territory of the United States can understand. The President and his party have declared in favor of bayonet supervision of the elections. Secretary McCrary is hearti ly in accord with the President and with his party in this matter. Demo cratic Senators are therefore, quiteight in the view that Mr. McCiai-y s nomina tion should ba earfuUyxoiisuiered be fore it is acted on Notwithstanding that since the-4th of March the Presi dent has thrown himself into the close embrace of the most radical element of his own party, and has set himself against the measures sent to him by those who represent a majority of the people of the country, there has oeen no scrutiny of the nominations which he has sent to tbe Senate, and they have been passed almost without exception. It is deemed proper that this unappre ciated generosity should give way to a different policy, and that in the future nominations shall be disposed of ac cording to their respective merits.
