she intended to make Atlanta by Satur

Pedewtrianism Through ther Alonn
tains. A popular mode of traveling over the
mountains in the . western part of our
State is to go on foot, taking it leisurely.
Parties are formed, of three or four
persons, who start from some point on
the railroad and walk till they have
seen all points of interest, stopping on
the way for fishingtind hunting as often
and as long as they canfiTM amuse
ment. -A party from Cabarrus, com
posed of three young men returned two
weeks ago from an extended trip, taking
in Warm Springs, Asheville, Black
Mountain, and many other points. A
week or two ago Mr. J. S. Manning,
Robt Strange and A. C Springs, recent
graduates of the University, left Char
lotte on an expedition of this sort. They
were in Lenoir the early part of the
week and were joined there by two
other parties. They carry a change of
clothing in a small wallet, tne whole
not weighing over six pounds, and ex
pect to be out six weeks or more. Those
who have tried it, say it is full of ; fun,
and affords advantages which cannot
possibly ne enjoyea by tne ordinary
methods of travel. It is likely that
there will be many parties of this sort
in the mountains this season.

As yet, so far as we have been able to
learn, there is no evidence to warrant
the belief that the negro is dead, ex
cept the mere fact that he has not

But public opinion demands that it
should be investigated thoroughly and

Indig-nation Againt theHang-ed illaii
The indignation against J. J. Moore,
the man recently lynched in Spartan
burg county, S, C, was very gre,at la the
neignbornooa wnere ne uvea. A citi
zen of that community writes that all
the churches in that neighborhood-refused
to allow him to be buried in their
errave vards. His remains were accord
ingly deposited in a field near his house.
Trie writer, who participated in the
lynching, says he has nothingto regret,
but much prefers the'' position he occu
pies to that or the man who allows
such a crime to go unpunished for one
day longer than could be helped.'
it may be mentioned m this connec
tion that Governor Simpson has " issued
a proclamation calling upon the law
officers and all good citizens of Spartan
burg county to take all steps within
their legal capacity as othcers and citi
zens to bring the lynchers of Moore, the
ravisher and murderer, to punishment.
and thereby vindicate the majesty of
the violated law.
Children's Concert. ... ;
The opera house was crowded last
night as it was on the occasion of the
children's first concert there under the
management of Mr. Arthur L. Butt.
Mr. .butt seems to possess a peculiar
fitness for training children for such
occasions. At any rate, they always do
well, not unirequently surprising their
parents. Added to this, is always an
artistic finish and completeness about
the ditierent features ot the programme
which is very pretty and attractive.
The entertainment last evening
consisted of two cantatas, "Grand
pa's Birth-Day" and faThe Mav Queen,"
interspersed with various songs. The
little children were all very prettily
dressed, in white or bright colors. There
were nearly a hundred of them on the
stage at once, and the scene was a very
attractive one indeed. The concert was
a success and was heartily enjoyed by
the large crowd that assembled to
hear it.
