The trial of young Stlckleather on tjie Charge of rape, in the Superior CourtSf Iredell, is attracting a good deal of In terest in Statesville. There are fully fifty witnesses, among whom are five Shysicians. These were examined Fri ays evening, when Judse Graves ad journed the court. He said it would re assemble yesterday morning at 6 o'clock as -he was determined, if ; possible, to conclude the case before Sunday. Eight lawyers are engaged in it, four on a side. Miss Ward, the young woman who is alleged to have been assaulted, was on the witness Stand, and was sub jected . to 1 a -rigid examination. She claims that chloroform was used. Mrs. Potts, the walking woman, was expected to arrive in Atlanta about 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon. . When last heard from she was only a few miles from that city, and was putting in some of her . lengthiest strides. Atlanta, al ways ready for a sensation of any sort, awaits her arrival breathlessly. It is reported by telegraph here that she will be met by -2,000 people. Arrange ments have already been made by which she waa to walk there last night in a large hall against time. Her trip from Charlotte was without accident She made the 266 miles in less than 10 days avpraorinor Aver V7 miloa rwr rlnv Sho was treated with the utmost kindness along the road. In connection with the sanitary move ments now on foot under the direction of the city authorities, we quote the fol lowing from Dr. Snow, an eminent physician and registrar of the city of Providence, R. I., in his last report : In connection with this subject 1 think it my duty to ask the attention of the people of Providence, and especial ly oi parents, to the following state ments: 1. No case of dipththeria occurs with out an adequate cause. This is self-evident 2. The cause of nearly all cases of the disease exists in the houses or premises, or within a few feet of the houses where the cases occur. 3. The cause of nearly all cases that occur in the city is breathing impure air from privy vaults or sink drains, or cesspools ; or drinking impure water. Much observation and long-continued and careful investigation have perfect ly satisfied me of the truth of these propositions, and they are applicable to all cases, whether in the tenements of . the poor or in the mansions 'of the rich. Branch House. We have Georgia, Florida and South Carolina pretty well stocked up with Branch Houses, but there seemed to be a vacancy in North Carolina and so we captured Charlotte and con verted It into a grand musical depot from which our "Tar Heel" friends can be supplied with our Instruments and music. This hew Branch will be known as the "MeSmith Music House" and be un der the management of Mr. and Mrs. McSmlth, who have made our Greenville (S. C.) Branch such a success. A fine store room has been secured and a large and complete stock of Pianos. Organs, Music and small Musical Instruments will be kept on hand at prices and terms precisely the same as at our central Savannah House. All stock for this House is shipped direct from Factories and hav ing the advantage of our large cash purchases they are enabled to sell as low as we can and to com pete with any other House in North Carolina or the South. Our North Carolina patrons will hereafter find it to their interest! to: patronize the Charlotte Homse tathei than Urselves, inasmuch as by so doing they will save largely In freight and receive their goods In one-half the time. "Happy McSmlth" is so well Known in ana arouna unanotce uiat we have no need to endorse him. but to those who don't know hfm we will say that when he is selling a Piano or an organ he is as nappy as a man can be, and as selling Instruments is his daily business he is happy all the day long. He has a happy faculty of making everybody else happy and if Charlotte is not full of happy people before he has been there long it will be because happiness ain't contagious. With this magnificent chain of Music Houses and our Grand Central Depot, we are now able to supply a solid musical South with Musical Instru ments and Publications. We are progressive men and it Is our aim to extend our facilities with, our steadily increasing trade and thus ever maintain our acknowledged supremacy as the Leading Music House 01 tne soutn. - 1 1 r f m. iWrl .
