Special Dispatch to the Philadelphia Times. New York. June 27 While direct ing their search for testimony in the Hull murder case aeamsuxnemuraereQ woman's husband, the police say they were influenced much by the averments of a man whose name they decline to. give. Sficjs the negd Cox; confessed the crime d6uDtr have TbeeTr5 expressed of the existence of such a person. The police said that this man stood ready to testify that Dr. Hull had approached urn with propositions to rra. mm oi Mrs. Hull. To-day under pressure Su- erintendent Walling gave the name and address of the man and the report ers hunted him up. He turns out to be an ex-convict, convicted of stealing a oad of furniture ifi New Y pru. wniie he would say little he adhered to the original story of being approached by Dr. HulL Me was present at tne inquest and was ready to testify. He would have been put on" the stand but for the arrest of Cox, and it is conceded that his storv would have" added much to the very strong circumstantial evidence ai- readv round against tne aged nusDanu But as it would have been necessary for the Governor to pardon him before he could testify legally, inasmuch as he is an ex-convict, a scheme was put up Dy the police to put him on the stand un der the assumed name he has taken since his release from prison. To this the coroner and all the police authori ties' assented, but District Attorney Rollins objected, and his objections were what kept the man oil the stand for three days of the inquest. This in dicates strongly the police desire to con- yict Mull. The mans name is u. Aicott Pwdy. He says that the police have gjyea him arway. and that he. has it in las power to tell an ugly story about them. In fact, he hints quite strongly that they have gone to unwarranted ex tremes in their search 'for testimony. Yet he will not go into details, and when brought back, to his ,ws aver ment that.-IIull approached Him insists upon its truth. Altogether it is a puz zling development of the case. A DUSKY HEIRESS. Mrs. Swineford encouraged his advances, and the two became fast friends. Gray had a wife, young, charming, talented and beautiful;' " What need, then, had ,anyman to feel jealous of him? So thought Mr. Swineford, and so he, too, made friends with Gray, and installed him in the Nettling mansion as a wel come visitor. The jealousy of the husband was at last aroused by overheard gossip, and on Saturday night he armed himself and, concealed near his own house, awaited events. He saw Gray and Mrs. Swineford talking together at the rear cratft nf their rfisinp.nfifi. and raisinff his revolver, and taking good aim, blazed awav. The first shot served to alarm the individual, who ade a hasty re treat, closely followed Dy the intimated husband. iA. second shot followed, but, like the first, missed his intended mark A third whizzed Dast the fugitive's ear, and the fourth took effect in the tack iust above the hip. "When, pray, did Charles Fos ter become a Republican?" said the waning Senatorial leader in a tone that made Mr. Robinson retire with a ring ing in his official ears that seemed very much like a big flea, and without receiv ing a direct reply to his polite invita tion. This simply means that Grant, Conkling & Co. do not intend to let up even temporarily on Sherman, Garfield, Foster & Co. And then comes a report from Ohio that the stalwarts there urn abusing Garfield savagely, and tlu-ir leading organ declaring that no such cowardly Republican can ever represent Ohio in the United States Senate. In the meantime Keif er is making his stal wartism conspicuous, and indulging the hope that Jie is to supersede Garfield as the leader of the Ohio Republicans. The Act of Laughing. Exchange. No doubt the sound of laughter is one of the very earliest and oddest of hu man cries. It is certainly an astonish ing sound, and one that is very difficult to listen to and analyze without preju dice and a remote feeling of sympathy. The best way to study it that I know is to seize on opportunities when one is being constantly interrupted, say at one's club, in reading a serious book, by shouts of laughter from a party of strangers ; one can then note the curi ous vanetyof spasmodic sound, produc e&and marvel that men in the midst of rational conversation should be com pelled by necessity to break off sudden ly their use of language and find relief and enjoyment in the utterance of per fectly inarticulate and animal howls, like those of the "long-armed gibbon. m I i Another North Carolina Walker.
