Raleigh, SepteiBfaer 23, 1879.
To the Editor of The Observer:
While the announcement of an Iude-
endent movement, made in your
iVashington correspondence of the 19th
inst., took many readers by surprise,
the existence of such a plot is nowhere
denied. On the contrary, one of our
dailies here at the capital avows arrfW
openljL4eclares it. Taking the atalLslio, hftviag
ments or your corresponuent, ana re
viewing the course of this paper for the
past six months, it is readily seen how
this movement or policy has developed.
itself, and the prominent actors in it
stand out in bold relief. But your cor
respondent has gotten matters slightly
and justice to the Observer, edited by the
chairman of the State Democratic ex
ecutive committee, and, therefore, jus-
tice to the Democratic organization as
well, requires that the proper state
ment of the case he promptly made.
The Observer is certainly subject to no
extraneous or other influence that can
wield it against the regular organiza
tion of the Democratic party. But oth
erwise the statements attributed to
Judge Tourgee appear to be well-found
ed, and while it is a matter or aeep rr
gret that it is so, it is, nevertheless, to
the manifest interest of the Democracy
of North Carolina that the whole mat
ter be promptly set before the Demo
crats of the State and the nation.,

M That a nartv thus officered can be
successfully organized is a moral im
possibility. The more keen-sighted of
its members already perceive this fact,
and in it lies the danger of the Demo
cratic party. That the successful can
didate will be a Democrat, is more than
probable : that he will be the nominee
of the Democratic party in convention
assembled, is a matter of grave doubt
That there will be no Republican nomi
nation, is very nearly a certainty.
THE TRAIL OF THE SERPENT.
The reader is requested to note the
striking similarity between the expres
