A. Cumniings has established a Republican paper at Marshall, Madison county. It is said that Winston manufactur ers will manufacture a million more pounds of tobacco next year than ever b afore. The Winston Sentinel says that rat terriers, from a natural instinct, can easily be trained to become excellent squirrel dogs. Wadesboro thinks it will have a graded school after the 1st of January. About $1,000 have been raised for this purpose. The large quantitv of mast in the woods about Winston is attracting numbers of wild pigeons. A sportsman, according to the Sentinel, some days ago bagged forty in a short time. The Review says that a negro boy was washing windows in Wilmington Tuesday when he fell from the second story of a house, gashed his chin and had two of his teeth knocked out. The Raleigh News denies editorially a statement which, it says, has been cir culated in that city by irresponsible parties, to the effect that it is to be sold to and merged, wun tne Kaieign uoser-tei: The Farmer and Mechanic states that Cant. Stewart, an ex-armv officer. and Miss Rebecca, daughter of the late Dr. T. S. Duffy, of Rutherfordton, N. C, were united in marriage in New York City a few days ago. The Farmer and Mechanic says Dr. Gnssom taiKs to some or ms mends as if no amount of money would induce him to canvass the State as a political candidate. His tastes and ambition run with his profession. The Fanner and Mechanic says that at denton Steet M. E. Dr. Burkhead, of the North Caro lina Conference, was united in mar riage to Miss Dixie Gayles, of Raleigh Long life and happiness. Wadesboro Herald : Last Wednesday night some person entered the dwelling bouse or Mr. u. m. nurns, out was dls covered before he succeeded in getting anything, m jumping out of the win dow, he lost his hat, which we hope will lead to his detection. On the same night, some one entered the residence of Mr. Samuel Shepherd and took his trunk out of the house and rifled it- leaving the trunk in the yard The Gleaner says that Miss Sallie Long, quite an aged maiden lady, liv insr about a mile and a half from Gra ham, was found in her house, burned to death, last Monday evening. She lived alone, save a negro woman who lived in the yard, and who was absent that day. She was found in the tire nlacfe where it is supposed she had fal len. She was old and feeble, and was at the time sick. It is said Governor-elect Foster, of Ohio, is going to Massachusetts to square some old accounts with Gen. Butler. Secretary Evarts and Senator Blaine delivered Republican speeches at Coop er Institute, New York city, Tuesday night At a Republican meeting in Salem, Mass., last Thursday night, Representa tive Loring advocated strongly the nomination of Gen. Grant near year. The Springfield (Mass.) Republican says: lr Bayard were nominated the best campaign documents in his favor would be compiled out of the leading Republican papers for years." When Kearney sent up his card to Gen. Grant the third time the "quiet man" remarked: "I would see any workingman or any man in California but I won't see a ruffian." Indianapolis Sentinel, Mr. Ilendrick's organ, says that State will present his name in the next Democratic national convention, arid adds if there is any thing in the drift of publie sentiment he will he nominated. At the Republican primaries held in New Orleans for choice of delegates to the State convention, the Colored Men's Protective Union, whose battle-cry is "Grant and Kansas," seemed to have everything their own way. Ex-Gov. Gilbert C. Walker addressed a large Democratic meeting at Bing hampton, N. Y., Monday evening. He arraigned the Republican party because of their cowardice in declining to join issue with the Democrats on questions of State policy. There was a smile which soon became audible at the Kelly meeting, at Roches ter, last Thursday night when one of the orators, by a slip of the tongue, said : "In electing John Kelly Governor you will honor him more than you honor yourselves." The Mobile Register warns the De mocratic party of New York, that, while thev can anord to be beaten, thev can not afford to let Tammany Hall dictate to the Democracy ot the State or the Union who shall or shall not be its can didate for Governor er for President Ex-Gov. Hubbard, of Connecticut having been asked to stump New York for Robinson, has answered that while he sympathizes with the regular Demo crats, he has not the time to give them his services. He denounces the Kelly men as a "mutinous faction." The New York Sun says "he would be blind to what is going on who should not have observed of late a growing feel ing in favor of nominating some Union general as the Democratic candidate in 1880 ; and Wmfield S. Hancock is the Union general principally spoken of as the fit and available man." Congressman Felton, of Georgia, a leading independent, in a recent speech, said that he would be a candidate for Congress so long as his constituents might wish them to serve them there, but under no circumstances could he be induced to accept the nomination for Governor, or to Toe a candidate for that position. Senator McDonald, of Indiana, says : "There are three things, in my judg ment, tending to the result in Ohio the cry of a solid South had a tendency to revive the old war feeling; secondly, many would not vote for Gen.
