GRANT, THE STALWARTS AND THE SOUTHERNERS. Hon. A. K. McClure writes thus from Washington to his paper, the Philadel phia Times: In Kepnblican circles there are no developments beyond a growing feel ing that the; stalwarts mean to strangle Grant and Grantism because of his con servative attitude toward the South. The entire administration is in the most candid sympathy with anything to beat Grant in the nominating con vention, and there is now great confi dence felt among the stalwart leaders that it can be done. Meantime, the South is quiet and likely to be more quiet this session than in the past. What are called the tropical rhetori- pinna nf f!nncreK will be less fruitful of campaign battle cries for their ene mies this session than ever before. For lilies tuio acasiuii tiiaiicici uciuiu. j. - so much the country may also be thank- ful Of the first part of the above it may be said that we desire to see no man Dunished for a thine for which he is innocent, and therefore the strangula tion of Gen. Grant on the ground stated would not only be cruel and unusual but entirelv gratuitous. Of the three last sentences it mav be remarked that there are some Southern Congressmen who can never open their mouths with out putting a foot in it, and it is very desirable at all times that they should be muzzled. But if there are any Southern men in Washington who really know the sentiments of their sections and yet fail to speak these for fear of hurting somebody's feelings in the North, then it is about time for their constituents to call them off and replace them with men who have the courage of their convictions. "Tropi cal politicians" eh? Well, some of these have made the stalwarts, pay very dear in debate for their "battle cries," we notice. NORTH CAROLINA MATTEKS IN CONGRESS. On the opening day of Congress only four of the ten gentlemen who repre sent North Carolina in that body (two in the Senate and eitrht in the HouseX reported for duty. Neither of our Sen ators was there, and the only members wno answered to tne roil call were Messrs. Martin, of the first, Steele, of the sixth, Armfield, of the seventh and Vance, of the eighth districts. On the second day Messrs. Kitchin, of the sec ond, and Scales, of the fifhth districts, appeared in their seats, and Mr. Steele explained for his colleague, Mr. Davis, of the fourth district, that he was paired with Mr. Dick, of Pennsylvania. On Wednesday Mr. Ransom answered the Senate roll-call and Mr. Russell, of the third district, reported in the House, leaving only Senator Vance out of pock et, he, at last accounts, being still de tained in New Orleans. The following paragraphs are found in the Congressional Record's report of Wednesday's proceedings in the House: Mr. Russell, of North Carolina, intro duced a Din (ti. n. jno. 2470) to create a new collection district in North Caroli na, and to make Fayetteville a port of entrv: which was read a first nnrt con. ond time, referred to the committee on commerce and ordered to be printed, By Mr. Vance: A paper relating to the establishment of post-routes from Collettsville, via Mulberry Valley, to iwv;, nuiii a. on view, vict -tt.ruenf Lt. - - v .. v j j Vltca, IAJ AJCC Brittain s ; from Asheville to Riceville, via weaver uam aitd Hawk Creek all in North Carolina to the committee on the pQst-ofice and post roads. Grant and Col. Waddell. A Northern paper recently announced that Hon. A. M. Waddell, of North Car olina, a prominent Democrat and until lately a member of Coneress from the third district of this State, was in favor of Grant for President next year and was "openly advocating his cause." At the time we expressed the opinion that there was no word of trnth in the alle gation. Col. Waddell, having returned trom a somewhat protracted absence i - irom nome, nas made a final denial of all the charges made, concluding a let ter on tne subject to the Raleigh Obser ver in this language : Now, I ask space in your columns to WAV that f hofD u via 4 a luoiciAjuauuueu w, anu ajso to re- marK, ior tne tenelit of whom it may concern, mat it is early to commence ii ex i years campaign, and a mistake to do it by misrepresenting persons who are not before the Dublin a for office, and that if there is one thine Miumiuc jjciuwiauc party seems to have special need for at present, it is unity and harmony among its members.
