Boston Journal. Rev. James Freeman Clarke's sub ject, last evening, in his course of lec tures before the Lowell Institute, was "The Christian Monks and Monastic Life." After speaking of the difficulty which we ot the present find m believ ing that in Christian lands and during long periods, it was universally held that the highest and almost only type of religion consisted in leaving the world and its business and retiring in to a hermit's cell or a monk s convent, the lecturer pointed out the tact that Jesus was "made perfect through suf ferings'sufferings endured while do ing His work among men. He did not retire into a eloset. He went about do ing good. He nowhere recommended monastic lite, jonntne .baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine. The Son of Man came eating and drink ing, and yet during many centuries the Christian Churcn took John the .bap tist, and not Christ, as its example, and as the type of the highest virtue. The worn monk means, etymoiogicaiiy, a solitary. The word hermit (or eremite) means, etymoloffically, one who lives in the desert. The monastic system was not found in Christianity during the farst three centuries. There is no trace of it in the Roman catacombs. Austere self-denial and renunciation of the world were not then considered the highest type of Christian virtue. They painted on the walls of the catacombs not John the Baptist in the wilderness, but Jesus sitting at the marriage least. The age of the monks had not yet come. That age began for Christianity in the year 311. and in Egypt in the appear ance of Anthonv the hermit. Dr. Clarke spoke of the fact that prior to the Chris tian era anchorites had existed in Egypt under the old religion, and gave some interesting illustrations of their life and the estimation in which they were held. The first monks were anchorites and ascetics, and as an example of then- practices the lecturer cited one saint who. having killed a knat which was stinging him, punished himself by sleep ing naked in a marsn, wnere ne was covered with venomous flies. Another one would onlv eat rotten corn. Anoth er slept forty days and nights in the middle of thorn bushes. St. Athana- sius relates with a thrill of delight that St. Anthony, the father of monasticism, was never euiltv of washing his leet. St. Simon Stylites, who was considered the greatest saint of all, lived on the top of a pillar sixty-five feet high. " " ' Wanted.' Lately a very remarkable and inter esting movement has been going on among the Irish Catholics of New York, under the leadership of Father McNamara, late a Romish priest and once a resident of this city. McNamara commenced the movement by openly and boldly opposing the Catholic Church, by showing up its intolerant spirit, its ambition and oppression, its deootism and imposition upon its votaries. At first he was bitterly op posed and roughs attended his meetings to disturb mm, out ne persevered, nis plan was to show up the Romish Church in its proper light, and to read and ex pound portions of Scripture. He suc ceeded in convincing the Irish that the Italian organization of the Komish Church had always enslaved both the soul and body of the Lrish people. Thousands attended his meetings and for the first time heard the true story of the Cross and renouncing the Romish Church, they gladly accepted the Savior in repentance and faith. One Sunday seven hundred abandoned the Old Church and in two weeks two thousand did the same. Several other priests have joined McNamara and they have ordained him Bishop. No hall large enough to hold his congrega tions can be had in. New York. A very Donular Romish priest and a D. D. of Boston, has joined the movement and Bishop McNamara has visited that city, and on the occasion of his visit many of the most intelligent Catholics of Boston endorsed and joined the move ment.
