Democrats cans, as the case may be, have always Deen so, ana before them were. These are the kind of men through whom revolutions are effected, and never did a political party have better material for such a purpose than the Republicans now have. That- Gen. Grant will be nominated by the Republicans seems to be at least hrghlyprotablej and there are many thon3and$rf peep& at. ,the. South, and doubtless other thousands at the North, who believe that his election for a third term would practically . effect a revolu tion in -system of government, and even His' candidacy would, or might, su perinduce a very dangerous crisis. For suppose, being nominated, he should be defeated by the solid vote of the Soutb ad bftoW enough Northern voteg'tp .elect ,-rua -jcompeior. v.. The question is, would the Republicans ac cept the situation and "step down and out?" AVhile I hope I may be mis taken, I believe that his nomination will indicate a purppse pu the part of the Repifclicatis hot to accept, defeat at the tallot box. It ought to be remem bered that almost a generation of Re publicans have grown up, accustomed by tair means .or roul, to uninterrupted success, and who have manifested a disposition not to submit to defeat. In the event.-then, of : an i electron close enough to furnish a pretext for another dispute about counting the electoral votes, a few men certainly, if not one, would have it in their power to plunge the country into, civil wnr, unless the majority, for the-1 sake of peace, again submitted to be counted out. Peace is very precious, but if 1 were a JNortnern man instead ot a quondam rebel, i would venture to suguest that it would be dearly purchased at such a price. It is true, that the, happening of the fore going contingency might be avoided by making no opposition to the electi-on of Gen. Grant; but would it not be neces saijtXQJ the same reason, to elect him again and again t Gen. Grant has already had conferred upon mm an tne Honors and distinc tions that Washington had. If he de serves, more, the question will come up, and aa sure as fate will have to be set tled ih a -practical way, vfhat does he not deserve i I have read history in vain if it has not taught me that any free country has. arrived at a danger our crisis in its history when it comes to consider any one man s services as indispensable. It ought to be considered, too, by all who think the security of our institu tions of more importance than the exi gencies of party, or than any ones in dividual interests, that the Democratic party, the only obstacle in the way ot Gen. Grant's ambition, will, notwith standing its-wonderful tanacity of life. infallibly fall to pieces in the event or his eleotion for a third term, and after another census shall have greatly re duced the comparitive political power of the South. Even now the Southern people, if they hated the goyernment as thousands of Northern people honestly believe, would have it in their power by the very act of these infatuated fools to utterly subvert and destroy it. But the truth is, the Southern people love the Union no less, and the constitution a great deal more, than the Union- shriekers themselves do. And contra ry to common opinion, they are a great deal more cautious and conservative than their fellow-citizens of the North, both in their domestic and governmen tal affairs. Hence, their adoption by the Confederacy of the Federal consti tution," and their refusal, even as a war measure, to make Confederate notes a legal tender; and hence their compari tive lack of private as well as public enterprise. This is perhaps to be . ac counted for by their hotflogpneity., -;A homogeneous people "are always more conservative, and more patriotic, too, than a heterogenous. In the United States there is proba bly now, as there was four years ago, a large majority of Democrats, but there Appears to be a certain proportion of these that can any time be frightened out of their senses by an out-cry against "Confederate Brigadiers."
