Ford said, when here Tuesday, that Charlotte was decidedly . the best show town in the State, and that in spite of the distance by which it was removed from other elitrible stoooin? points, it paid him very well to come here, ifroni this source this is auite a compliment.- Although there nave not' been a great many "bright particular still s" of the tirst magnitude, the. most marked improvement in the constella tions is observable, and this indicates a permanent reputation as a good show town, for the starring comuanies een- erally calculate on a good house for one night wherever thev co. while the well selected companies oulv visit those places at which they are confident of an audience. Since the 15th of September Charlotte has been favored with no less than twenty first rate dramatic companies. Four of these gave from two to five performances to houses ranging from $150 to $500. One of the twenty, Tony Denier's Humpty Dumpty company, had a house worth $750. Barney Ma- canlay, on January 8th, played to a $300 house and returning March the 3rd. just after Jos. Murphy had played a two days, engagement to fair houses, was greeted with a $3o0 audience. The average house of the season for a legiti mate dramatic performance has been worth, as nearly as can be calculated. slightly over $300. Four of the twenty troupes have shown their appreciation by returning. The management of the opera house have leased it both on per centage and stated sums, and the re ceipts since the first day of December, I87y, nave been over $i,ooo. They cal culate that the whole season has been worth double as much to them as any previous one. This, for a citv of 10.- 000 inhabitants is, we think, a first rate showing. Among the more noted of these com panies comes .first, MiTFord s comedy company, winch in their three appear ances here played "The Galley Slave, a new and popular play, "Fun on the Pa cific," and "Dr. Clyde." Belle Macken zie and Geo. Denham were the favorites, in this troupe. .Next, Barney Macau ley, as Uucje Dan'l in A "Messenger from Jarvis Section," met with the most enthusiastic appreciation, although Joe Murphy as the Kerry Gow was almost as popular. Although Paulding, the new namiet, was not lavored with a very large house, yet those who saw him admired his acting much, and fan cied they saw the outcrop of extraordi nary talents. Additional interest is en listed for this young actor, whose fam ily name is Dodge, from the fact of his North Carolina derivation. In the historical drama "Queen Eliz abeth" by the Bowers Thompson troupe, we presume to think Miss Charlotte Thompson as Lady Jane Grey did not nave a rote wnicn suneu uer peculiar style, but the superb acting of Mrs. Bowers as the "Bloody Mary" was uni versally admired. In opera, Alice Oates was the most distinguished singer we have had. She is somewhat less at tractive than when she was younger. Black cork has been at a sad discount, and Tony Denier's Humpty Dumpty is the onlv thing like "varieties" that has drawn the old men to the orches tra chairs, but from the house he had there is no danger that Charlotte will forget this delightful feature of the foot lights, before Mabel Santley is al lowed to return. i - . Two Women. Alderman Dowd presided yesterday mornine in the absence of the mayor. . .. . - Austin Lane and wile, colored, and an other woman a little less colored, ap peared. Austin s wife and the -other . rt.- a a woman had been ngutingover Austin, The other woman was fined $10 and coats. She couldn't pay it and went to the euard house. Austin's wife was fined 81 and costs. A white man named lioyie, wno, frnm his reDresentation. was "a Citizen nf the world " was fined a penny and cost for being drunk and disorderly. The irilnt Money. It is learned from Col. Cowles, Super- intAnrlfiiit of the Mint, that the sum unaccounted for bv the Mint in this citv to the United States government, - -a 1 A. 1 A nam w (1 .
