Mr. McAden is one1 of the most progressive business men of the South, and has done more, perhaps, than any other individ ual in stimulating the development of the French Broad route to the West, which all who are not blind as moles concede to be the route which it is the policy of South Carolina to foster in the interest of its metropolis and the con venience of the entire State. Even our Charleston contemporary, which ap peared to have been laboring under an attack of the Blue Ridge delusion, came limping up yesterday with an admission that perhaps the way to the West via Asheville was the correct thing after all." The Telephone to StatevUle. The Statesville American is disposed to encourage the movement looking to wards the building of the" telephone line from Charlotte to that place, which the Atlantic, Tennessee & Ohio Rail road will do if the people will furnish the poles. It says : "By all means let them construct the line, and that with out delay, and it is to be hoped that proper steps will be taken at once to secure it. True we have telegraphic communication With ' Charlotte but round by Salisbury, fcudiis we know it, takes a long time to reach either point for not long since a dispatch was sent byacertain party who was belated? in Charlotte, (it has such winning ways) to this poiut, and it took about thirty hours to reach here. Gentlemen, those of vou who are holding potton. f 0 higher prices, may. aiue yeur expectations, yet reseenjs loenc mat, coances are againstyoa.?i ve civen Darticatar attwdion to tne atUa Bftfevetnenti fotheV4asv fifteen yeai-s, and if we are to be governed by the past there is, no possible chance for an advance. Prices were equally as good last December as they have been since. To-day we are 400,000 bales ahead of last year, all manufacturers through out the world knew. With this great excess of cottou ahead, how can we possibly look for higher prices. Besides there is a universal efiort on the part of produper to (f increase their -.planting, and nevevHvere more commercial fertili zers purchased up to this time. The re cent heavy rains seem to have no effect on receipts. Charlotte has about 1,800 bales of cotton stored, owned by buyers and planters, and I am reliably inform ed that throughout the cotton belt more cotton is being held than usual for this season. Tlie staple has been sell ing jt6 long at IS tol3-ki New York, and at proportionate prices in the inte rior, that wj&have (become accustomed to it, and are nardly ready to agree that it is even a fair price. I remember verv well, earlv in the falh when cotton sold here, at to 934c, a good many rarmers who sold at the above figures said 10 epnt? w,oul he a fair priced and tnajru woufcLuay lp raise cotton at iu cents. To-day Charlotte merchants are payingi2Kc to I2jc for besjt gradesJlf cotton, winch Is only a,Mato c less than the highest prices paid during the season. At one time prices ran up to 13c for some fanev erades. but onlv re mained so for twenty-four hours. -J The only gi-ade of cotton that has declined much is stains, and we all know they naa ampie room. However, the tumble in.stains will not amount to much, as most planters have sold them, and held their better cotton. Ten cents now would look low for good cotton, but be careful you don't sell for less before the summer is gone, W-. A Denial frm Dr. Chrivtiancy. Dr. Victor H. Christiancy. son of ex- Senator Christiancy, has published a card in the Leavenworth (Kansas) Times, making a strong denial of the allegations ot his. step-mother that his father sold out the senatorship to Sena-1 tor Chandler. Dr. Christiancy says he overheard the conversation, in which his father expressed a desire to retire from the Senate, as he had lost interest in politics and hi3 business was embar rassed, and he thought it adyisable to accept a position in which he could save something," which' he could not do in the Senate. Senator Chandler stated that he wras enthusiastically interested in politics. Dr. Christiancy savs he never heard a dishonorable word from either of them, and never made a state ment to Mrs. Christiancy that could be so construed, and that her statements are entirely drawn from imagination.
