Making Lumber Oat of Straw Trenton Gazette. sThaversatile ingenuity of a Western invehtor, who doubtless foresees the line in the far distant future when the 'orest shall cease to clothe the hills and dales, and the demand for lumber shall prove vastly in excess of the supply, has succeeded in devising a substitute for the natural product of the virgin or the cultivated soil. His plan is to use that fragile vegetable, straw, and Dy a peculiar process to compress it into a substance as hard and indestructible as oak lumber. It is claimed that this pro cess converts wheat straw into timber Which js susceptible of as fine a polish ana tinish as mahogany apd black wal nufc at a cost not in excess of that of theb'est clear pine. The straw is first manufactured by the ordipary paper mill process into straw board, and a safpeiehtinumber of sheets of this of (He right size are taken tcr'niake the re quired timber. They are soaked and softened in a chemical solution, which is, of course, the inventor's secret. Af tejf the fibre of the pasteboard is suffi ciently saturated, the pile of .sheets is pressed between a: series Of "rollers,' which couselidates them so that when dry. the whole is a hard stick. It is also cfalmed that the process renders this wood substitute impervious to water, and the chemicals used are such, as to make it fire-proof. But the sanguine inventor has only made samples thus far. VI. I ; "George Eliot V JTIarriaffe. It seems that George Eliot, the nove list, is John Walter Cross's bride, after all. A New York. "A SCATSDAL. . Over the Proposed Appropriation for Completing a War Vessel. Louisville Courier-Journal, j' Washington, May 25, There is a lively scandal about ready to break out in connection with the efforts to secure the completion of the. monitors inaccor dance with a recent report of the com mission. An effort will be made tc morsow to insert in the sundry civil ap propriation bill 34,000,000 for this purpose-:- How the report in which: this motion will be based was obtained, may be judged from the following state ment; J. W. Fralich, of Philadelphia, is a relative of a gentleman who is official ly connected with the President. A short time ago he made a contract with Cramp & Sons, of Philadelphia, in whose yard is' the uncompleted moni tor. Terror. 'The, contract was that Fralica should: Induce the department to recommend: the 'completion of the ironclads lor a consideration. The foV lewing is an extract from the contract: "The party of the second part agrees,, to ? pay the sum of frve per cent, for servi cerrenderedmnd td W rendered in se curing special instructions from the Navy Depairtntent favorable to secur ing an additional appropriation from Congress in the further construction and completion of the monitors now. on the docks." The eornrnission of experts was appointed and recommended- the completion of the vessels", and Secreta ry Thompson approved the finding. Pralich insists that all this came about through his and his relations'1niluence and deniandarHS per cetftage, 5'pet c6nt'.' of Cramp & Sons' expected profits.which would: amount to $29,000. Cramp & oons r?T"seu to pay, ana ranch began a suitvwhich has since been discontin uedj' presumably by compromise. This atiieast indicates what profits the con tractors expect to make from the com pletion of the monitors, which, are said to be utterly worthless for all purposes of defensive warfare : !
