The grandest churches with alabaster and marble Columns, frescoes and mosaics, that Carry you to the very clouds. Then in the midst of all this granduer and mag nificence you come up with a painted Madona with" tinsel and cheap beads and the brassiest of ornaments all about her, or run up against some hideous figure of the cross, with a horrid image of Christ. Then, too, in the very centre of the grandest of churches, sits a bronze figure, stiff and ungainly, in a marble chair.
