Among the persons who con tributed to the fund were members of both political parties, and one of the most prominent gentlemen ! connected -with the 'movement is a prpnoun6?d Democrat One of the subscribers to the fund in speaking of it yesterday said . , -: f ... . "The idea originated amoncr General Grant's personal friends, irrespective of poiiues, woo aesirea 10 esiaoiisa a iuna solely for hrs benefit as a fitting xesti monlal. It was kept Very quiet, and tne first intimation or it whicn nas ap peared in print was published in to-daj'a Times. I am sorry that anything has been published regarding it, as none of tne gentlemen wno contributed to tbe fund desire any notoriety and were moved solely by their warm friendship for Gen. Grant. The money has all teeen Subscribed and can be 'drawn wherrde- sired. It has not been presented 4o Gem Grant yet, but will be handed over to nim snoruy. The other movement, which began in New York some time after the Phila delphia project had been started, was originated by George Jones, proprietor of the New York Times, and had for its object the establishment of a fund of 8250,000 for living ex-Presidents, in the order of their retirement. Upwards of $20,000 were raised in a short time by means of appeals to the public through the columns of the New York Times, and it was subsequently made known that four gentlemen in that city bad agreed to contribute the entire sum of 8250,000, if desired. The atteh tionof John Forbes, a wealthy citizen of Boston, was attracted to this and he agreed to raise 850,000 as the subscrip tion of New England to the fund and declared his desire to contribute the whole amount himself. In the mean time the projectors of the Philadelphia plan, knowing that Mr. Forbes was a personal friend of General Grant, ad dressed him a letter asking if he wished to contribute to the fund here, without knowing of his other offer. It is now probable that efforts will be made to combine the three funds expressly for ex-President Grant-and present him with the entire sum, which will reach upwards of 8400,000. .-M , mmm ; , . .,;,T A SLY ITALIAN ...) tfUo Has Been Going About Seekioa; ffhom ne May Swindle, and SWInd WASHfNQVoB'ec.4 The' ;ciitf ,pf the secret service to-day received a let ter from a cotton and commission merr chAntfih Holly Springs, MissstattM; that he-was one of the. Such a law would, be of doubtful CQnstitutiouality and it would not be right even if constitutional. ' North Carolina is just as fully protected in the development of her iron, and coal as is Pennsylvania, and if lher manufac turing interests are not advanced, it is the fault of the; people and not the fault of tbe law. . j: tj, . i,,.- , 2. There are two remedies for the complaint of our correspondent The tax laws of: the State rnay be made to discriminate in favor; of .the develpp xnent of coaLand the manufacture of iron, but that is not Mlsely tj b accep table to the people who would thus be compelled to pay more than their just share of taxes. In Pennsylvania the discrimination in our tax laws is the other way. Our coal, iron and i other corporations pay all the State tases and .our land-owners are exempt ; The only other remedy, and the proper one under all circumstances, is to make iron and furnish coal cheaper or as cheaply as Pennsylvania can, and that can de done if you have the facilities you claim. Y bu have a better climate and cheaper labor, and if you have the coal and the iron, you want only capital, energy and good business direction to supply your own people and send your surplus to Pennsylvania and undersell our pro ducers. You don't need local Jaws to protect your coal and: iron interests, but you do need to eommand capital bv proving that it: will pay, and to: make cheapiron and coal by hard work, and good management instead of seeking the aid of special legislation, Ed.
