Statesville Landmark: We do not know whether the Danville, Mocks ville & South-Westem Railroad Com- Eany, which announces its purpose to uild a narrow gauge line from Dan ville to Statesville, means business or not, but we notice that it advertises in the Winston Leader for 20,000 cross ties. Concord Sun : Christmas day, Hamp ton Phifer, colored, who lives near the poor house, weut off to spend the day, leaving his two children alone in his cabin, the consequence may be guessed. When he returned, the ashes of his chil dren were smouldering with those of his cabin. Maj. R. C. Badger, vhile engaged in a trial in the Superior Court, in Ral eigh, Thursday morning, had a slight paralytic stroke and fell to the floor. He soon recovered sufficiently to be taken home, but was, at last accounts, yet quite ill. Hog cholera is raging in portions of Alexander county. Some of the citi zens have lost a great many. Tht Funding: Bill. Washington, Jan. 6. The funding bill was taken up in the House to-day Totsgeneral debate, and although there were tew speeches made, it was demon 'Strated that the bill as reported will be seriously opposed and that there is quite a wide diversity of opinion as to the proper shape in which a fuuding measure shall be passed. Mr. McLane made some remarks on the subject, which were listented to with atten tion, and evidently mde an impres sion on the House. He said that he recognised the obligation and responsi bility to rftaintaln xlie public credit of the)ountry, The best interests of the people were more involved in that than in anything else. In the last few years we had reduced the taxation of the people nearly forty millions a year. The simple issue to-day was whether we should pay the debt due in 1881 with a long or a short bond. He fa vored a short bond, and was willing to fojldw the recommendation of the Sec retary of the Treasury and, pay the maturing bonds of '$81 in ten years. This debt after July, 881, would amount to! about ' $637,000,000. The Buma due the sinking fund in the game time would amount to $520,000,000 which would leave a very small sum to be met. He had no doubt the surplus revenue would in the ten years exceed the aggregate of the sinking fund as above stated by three or four million dollars. This would leave really to be provided for the 4 per cents maturing in 1SP1 and 4 per cents in looe. The first amount only to about $250,000,000, anc) there would be money in the treas ury, after paying the debt of 1881, near ly sufficient to coyer this, independent of the special sinking fund, so that taxation could.be reduced asfter 1 nearly &50,0QQ,0QQ a year. The regular sinking fnfl as provided by law for the 4' per cents would be sufficient to meet that debt. He denounced the proposition to pay off the debt in silver when that rnetal was at a discount as a for hi of repudiation, disastrousto the public credit, rand therefore most in jurious to the people of "the country, and appealed to both sides of the House to sacrifice individual opinions and unite in support of the public credit. Crfre Ellot'a Hatband-Th IumubI . tf ol OlWi Craa The London Examiner, in its notice 61E tha death of George Eliot, tells of the insanity of her husband, of which no previous public mention has been made. It says: "It seems but little mor than a year since we lost George Henry Lewes, her first and most trust ed counsellor and companion, and hard ly a twelve months eince. the world learned, with perhaps some degree of surprise that she had married a gen tleman af the Stock Exchange named Cross. While they, were on their v?ed jding trip it. is no use to conceal the sad fact he lost control over himself at Venice, and : threw himslf from the balcony of their residence. Happily, the sea and not the ground received him, and he snrvived, but only to be placed in a maison deisante. . Bravely Mis. Cross, set herself to face her now doubly lonely Jife, but the struggle, not surpassed in intensity by that of any other heroines, did not last long, and she has now gone, at the age of 60, t the rest that must have come to her as a relief,"' : ""The New, 'Vtrk Swi says' of lilss Anderson's I6h ; Her garb of an Ar give youth1 is tasteful and correct to artistic traditions, but it does not in a strictfjr lady-Hke sense, become Miss Anderson. One receives the impres-Bioh-of yery charming voice proceed ing from an unnatural and uncertain elevation.
