Dr. George M?Beard, who has given uiut-u atkciitiuii iv luc auujecu or. ner vous disorders, and nas written an ex haustive work onthe trance state, made experiments yesterday at his office, at jno. iy jiasc xwenty-nintn street, with tnree subjects, in tne presence of sever ai other physicians. The first subject was Charles A. Ro gers, a machinist twenty years old. He is of medium height, solidly built, and in perfect health, as he has been from childhood. His ability to go into the trance state was discovered in the course of some recent exhibitions mesmerism given in Masonic temple. jjt. lieara nrsc seated ine young man and bade him close his eyes, ana then pressed the thumb of the right hand against the forehead midway between the eyes. This was followed by a few strokes upon the arms and body, and the young man was in a trance. Many of the experiments usualy made by mesmerists were tnea witn success. and then Dr. Beard said that he would make the young man entirely rigid, Alter a iew stroKes on tne arms and limbs, and the announcement that he was now perfectly rigid, the yeung man became as stiff as though dead for hours. His color remained natural and the action of the heart and breath ing were accelerated. The young man while in that state was lifted by the head and heels, and his body was inflex able. It was held bv the doctors that in this condition any surgical operation might have been performed upon the young man more saticfactonly than with the use of. anaesthetics. But as the susceptibility of the trance-condition is limited to one out of everv ten human beings, it cannot be generally employed instead of anaesthetics. The young man was next tested, when partially in a trance, as to loss of sensibility. He was informed that his left hand was numb and feelingless, A pin was pushed into a finger of that nana, ana no sign or pain accompanied tne act. v? nen tne otner nana was pricked the young man started, with an exclamation or pain. Even to the con tact with an electric brush, charged with a Faradaic current, the left hand was insensible, thoueh in the norma condition the pain therefrom is greater tnan mat causea oy contact with a red hot iron. The slightest touch of the brush to the right hand or face of the subject caused unmistakable evidence of severe pain. On being awakened he naa no recollection of any painful feel ing in tne leit nana, tnougn in a mo ment he complained of the wound the pin had made. Anaesthesia of the left side of the face was produced, so that tne pulling of the hair and mustache was not felt. The same treatment on the other side caused pain and shrink ing. It was found on examination that the temperature was ninetv-six decrees on tne siae or tae iorehead which the patient imagined was anaesthized. On tne other side it was only ninety-four degrees. A bottle of bisul phide of carbon, which Dr. Beard said had "the worst smell under heaven.' was produced and uncorked under the young man's nose. When asked if it did not smell sweet to one nostril un der which it was held, he esclaimed x es, it is cologne. When held to the other without being asked as to its per fume, he discovered its true smell, and recouea. to one side of his tongue cit ric acid was made to seem sweet, and to the other It had its natural disaeree- abie sour taste. In the test for color blindness, after beinz informed that if he closed one eye he could not tell the right color of anything he saw, he called a ball of pink cord white: a white card. he said, was blue; a piece of cloth of several shades, he said, was pink. The patient was brought out of the trance, and Dr. Beard was conversing with the other physician, when the yountr man cried out: "Doctor, did von tint. fix this eye. I can't see right yet." The doctor waved his hand hefnrA the eye, and said: "It's all richt now." The young man smiled, and said : "So it is." Prom these and other exriflrimpnta Dr. Beard holds that the trance condi tion is subjective. It depends upon the condition of the one who experiences it. Any one who can inspire the person ca pable of trance with the belief that he can enforce the condition upon the sub ject of trances can succeed in brineine it about. It is not a matter of will pow er in the manipulator, but of suscepti bility of the one who goes into mesmer ic trances. Similar experiments to those d ed above were made with Sames Wil son, 21 years old, a clerk in & bookstore, and David W. Wright, about 30 years old, who. Dr. B.eai d said, was the best subject known to psychologists any where. Both Roo-era and Wilsnn wr able in some small dpo-rpfl tn resist tho enforcement of the trance condition. but Wriebt bad no nnwar wrtvr in that directien, Wilson, when in the trance, was informed thaf, h wm h. fore a large audience, and it was desired mac ne should declaim for their pleas ure something from Shakespeare. Aris ing and stepping out into the middle of the. room, he began Hamlet's soliloquy. While; bfr was in the midst of his speak- Ins V Jk -1 1 Vl 1 3 ' l ur iiq uitsneu ma lianu across nis rore ,head and started forward, but his pow-1 er of speeoh was gone. His lips contin ued moving. Dr. Beard had touched the back of the speaker s neck. After, a short interval when the trance subject's face had grown red and the veins of his neck stood out like whipoorda with his vain, effort to spsak aloud, another slight blow -from the- doctor restored the power ' f audible speech, and the soliloquy was taken up at the exaet point wliicl the speaker had reached in his pantomimic efforts. Wright, who has weak evA pen men.ted with 1 UT' Ivenaorf, an oculist Tht subitet. when in a trance,, sat wattoiess for ten minutes, with wide pen eyes, as Dr. Mitteadorf peeved steadily into tbe pu pil with sin optieaT instrument which ! threw; a bright ray of lightupon the re tina. 'The doctor said thatsuch steady, unflinching gajse was barely possible to the strongest willed man in his normal .state, : ", Who Drew tie Last $100,000. 3 Is!
