Someday, NEWS IN NORTH CAROLINA tiaiherlngn From ibe State Paper, GenerrlJ. D.Imboden, of Virginia, and Mr. E. K. Hyndman, of Pennslyva- nia, were in Wilmington Monday for the purpose of . examinini; the fac ilities of that port as an outlet for the immense coal posit of Southwest Virginia and the iron of Mitchell cotnrty, North Carolina. The Star says : "They met a number of the members of the Chamber of Commerce and Produce Exchange, at the rooms of the latter body. Gen. Imboden stated that the parties mainly interested are now engagefcjn in construction 01 a narrow guge railroad, connecting the iron and coal mines above alluded to, which road they expect to connect with the Cape Fear & Yadkin Valley Rail road, in this State, and also connect with the Ohio Valley and the system of railroads extending thence to the great lakes. He spoke of both the iron and coal as being the finest quality known any where, and almost inexhaustable in quantity. To give some idea of the im mensity of the ceal deposits, he said at the rate of two thousand ton per day it would probably take five hundred years to exhaust the supply. Then as to the cost of the manufacture of what is known as the Bessamer Die iron he stated that in Pennsylvania it would amount to $528 per ton, white in North CardHna it would only cost about $15 per ton. sKowing a difference in fa vor of $tir State of SISperton. In fact, he thought that the advantages were so great in favor of oar State that it would result in a transfer of the Bessamer pig iron manufactories from Pennsvlvania to Western North Carolina." The losses by the late fire in Durham were as follows: The drv eoods es tablishment of Messrs. Styron & Co, and was purely accidental. It is reported that two young men, Messrs. Washington and James Autry of Bladen county, lost their lives on a timber raft, which was carried into Brunswick river from the Cape Fear, four miles above Wilmington, Friday Avening. The Star says : "There were five rafts in company coming down the Cape Fear, and all were carried into Brunswick river by the strong tide and a gale of heavy wind blowing at the time. The men on four of the rafts managed to get ashore several of them making narrow escapes from drowning in doing so; but the two young men mentioned remained on their raft and hav net since been heard of, althoughe it, with the other raft which were aban doned, was found. The report of Dr. J. W. Vick, chain man of the board of directors ef the Colored Insane Assylum at Goldsboro, the reports of the superintendent of the institution, and of Col. S. L. Freemont, the architect of the building, state the the total coat of toe property is $42,000, which includes the price paid for 175 acres of land, the : cost of the buildings, and waterworks. It is now theiught that it will be very easy to light the tunnel of St Gothard, nearly nine miles in length, by electric lamps. Mark Twain says there is something , very iascmaung aoout science it gives you such wholesome returns of conjec ture for such trifling investments of facts. Mr. W. Barnet Le Van maintains that an air-line railroad can be built be tween New York and Philadelphia on which trains could make the distance in one hour,, and that the enterprise would pay. The use of iron sleepers is becoming general i in Germany. The Berg-Mark Railway exchanges all the- old,, worn out sloepersTfor iron ones. Scholten, the St Louis photographer, has successfully used the electric light in printing phete-negatives. During holiday week the sun was so obscured as to seriously interfere with negative rinting. In this exigency the electric ight was resorted to and proved supe rior even to the brightest of the sun's rays. .A French electrician has devised an ingenious electrical low-water signal for steam boilers, which indicates the existing water level at any distance from ithe generator, and when the water has sunk below a certain point rings a signal bell, while at the same time the sign "low water" appears en the indicating tablet. An,. Italian professor has made some very agreeable researches, resulting in the discovery that' vegetable perfumes exercise a positively healthful influence on the atmosphere, converting its oxy gen into ozone, and thus increasing its oxidizing influence. He recommends the cultivation of flowers in all marshy districts. A distinguished German Physician assured people a while ago1 that early rising was a great mistake, and did not tend to make men "healthy, wealthy and wise," but quite the contrary. But now the London Lancet says that brain workers should rise about six o'clock, take a very light breakfast, and then they caD enjoy the "luxury of work with a clear brain" for a few hours. In view of the disagreement of authorities, each one had better suit himself after carefully studying his individual nature. Saapentfsm ef jTfartthall tc Co. The Charleston News and Courier says: The suspension or tne dry goods firm of E. W. Marshall & Co. was an nounced in business circles yesterday morning. No assignment has, as yet. been made, and no statement of the af fairs of the concern has been given out. It is under stood, too, that the firm will discontin ue business. The liabilities of the house are thought to be about $60,000, and their assets about $100,000-, but the exact figures cannot as yet be given. "The house is one of the oldest and best known business concerns in Charleston. It was started in 1852." Thousands Use It, Why Hesitate ? Joy to the world! Woman la Free!
