The interesting experiment of run ning the fires of a locomotive by gas burned from gas bags in the tender is being tried on a half mile strip of rail road in England known as the Hyde Pier Railroad. In the Portuguese bull-fights thB horns of the animals are now encased in leather and the battles are bloodless. Thus advancing civilization takes the cruelty out of the sport and leaves some of the fun. On some railroads in this country cat tle suffer for water. The Arizona Leg islature has just passed a law requiring all the railroads in the Territory to fur nish water "to travellers and stoek free of charge." A bill introduced in the Wisconsin Senate, amending the law relating to crimes alid the punishment thereof, merely repeals that portion which makes it a misdemeanor for one person to designate another as a "d n scoun drel." The Sultan of Turkey isn't progress ing like a crab just at this time. He has ordered that newspapers be estab lished in Mecca, Bagdad and Aleppo. The world may shortly expect to see; the Mecca Mahomet, the Bagdad Beard of the Prophet and the Aleppo Alad din. .;The new Constitution of California has hardly proved so great a hindrance to the commercial prosperity of that State as was anticipated, leastwise there was incorporated ja. San. Francis cd'Tast year companies with a capital ot morel, han $800,000,000, and in the State enough more, probably, to make a grand tbfelpf fl,OlX)jtfaD,000. Nebraska is wrestling with the ques tion, "Can an Indian vote?" It seems that a Winnebago Indian by the name of John Elk put in a claim for the right of suffrage at the recent election, which was reluaed. and now Mr. JSlk hasput in a claim for $6,000 damages. The at torney for the Indian holds that under the fourteenth .amendment the Indian has a right to vote. According to a Boston lecturer: "Ja pan had beeai unduly stimulated, and had abandoned her old customs to imi- tatethosejif TEuropJahs, bJKhich she had incurred" a great national debt, while the Chinese believe China is bet ter than any other country. There are no railroads, no telegraphs, no raining, no press and ntnaXional debt in Chiaa, altljqueh ajje his, about 30000,000 peo ple,;ana t$het) people are. satisfied. Washington, Jan. 24 The execu tive committee on inaugural cermonies has prepared a circular for general-distribution to the many civiTand military organizations which propose to be present at the inaugural ceremonies in this city on the 4th of March next, signed by H. C. Corbin, assistant adjutant-general United States army, .cor responding secretary. The committee in this circular say : "This committee wifl do-all in its power t provide far the comfort of such organizations as may give1 it notice of their coming. Jt cannot, of course, furnish quarters or subsistence, and that there may be no trouble on this score it is earnestly re quested that each visiting organization send an agent to this 'city, ot: appoint some one already here to act as such agent, with authority to make contracts in its behalf for quarters and subsis tence. Such agent should report to these headquarters, where he will re ceive information - as to rooms and prices, and will be added in finding ac commodations for his organization, This committee cannot be responsible for any discomfort which result from failure to act upon this suggestion. It is also recommended that each visiting organization shall, when it arrives within three hours' ride of the capital, telegraph the fact to the committee." Astronamical Discoveries. A remarkable coincidence has occur red in the calculation of two astrono mers widely seperated. Prof. Forbes a Scotch astronomer, finds a peculiar, grouping at the aphelia or most dis tant points from the sun of certain periodic comets. The planets, as is well known, are great comet dis turbers and think nothing of turning comets out of their course. In the mind of the observer, this peculiar cometary grouping indicates the exis tence of two ultra-Neptunian planets, and the daring astronomer has mapped out their approximate positions. Mr. Todd, an American astronomer, from observations on the disturbances of Uranus, has also mapped out a postion for an unknown planet, closely agree ing with that of. Prof. Forbes. If the right place has been indicated, sharp eyed observers will not be long in pick- ing up the wanderers, and one if not two new planets may soon enlarge the boundaries of the system. There will be a grand scanning of the celestial depths in the region of planetry possi bility, and observers will vie with each ther in the hope of attaining the much coveted honor of adding anew mem ber to the sun's family. Fact Abut Ue Figure. The height of the human figure is six. times the length of the feet Whe ther the form is slender or plump, the xnlehold good; any deviation from it s a departure framthe highest beauty in proportion. The Greeks -made' all their statues according to this rule. The face from the highest po.iBt.,.of the forehead, where the naif begins, "to the chin, is one-tenth of the whole stature. The hand, from the wrist- to the end of the middle finger, is the same. From the top of the chest to "the high est point of the forehead is the seventh. If the face, from the Toots of thje hair to the chin, be divided into three equal parts, the diyison determines the place Where the eyebrows meet, and the se cond the nostrils. The height from the feet to the top of head is the distance between the extremities of the fingers when the arms are extended. Talaiag-e ao4 Bemlwardt. In his sermon last Sunday, in the Brooklyn. Tabernacle Rev. T. DeWitt Taimage said, among other thiBgsi "If has been stated all over the tjountry that I -had assailed the character of a celebrated foreign actress at .present in: Arrierica, while v on.all JOtow tfiak! haye never referred.to, heri ddreotlror indirectly.
