' PAIN fl HUB Iiuprre4 3f qdjiatm anAJcospcta el Oar Seaport In TiTe 'Feare. - t WUmlngton Review. ; Let us retrospect and see what has beerx4one iu this city in the past rive velar: A new saw mill, the best of its site in tlie country, has beem built; an- otiier, wmcti; wasi Durnea,:fuus been rebuilt. A sash and blind factory has been rebuilt and enlarged. A rice mill, second to none in the country, has been duuc ana is in successful operation. Besides in the past five years the fol lowing enterprises have been establish ed: Cotton factory, tobacco factory, steam laundry, four steam peanut es tablishments, cigar factory, steam sau sage factory, marine sectional floating uock, new marKet-nouse, turnpike, tele phone fire alarm, , telephone exchange, two cotton compresses, two steamers to Smithville, pine-straw packing es-" tablishment, root and herb depot; car riage factory, harness manufactory, steam dying and scouring establish ment, two lagar beer bottling estab lishments, oil tank depot and two cem eteries. Among ' the literary produc tions are the North Carolina Medical Journal and At HorWaltd Abroad. The depth of water on the bar has been increased and New Inlet closed up, a public hospital will soon be built,' a stock company is now at work on the Duplin canal ; and the work of erect ing the Holly system of water works will be commenced in a few days. There are strong probabilities and hopes of a narrow gauge railroad, to "be run in connection with the coal and iron mines in the Western part of the State, terminating here and of having rolling mills establisded in this city. There are hopes of the fibre works be ing reopened and a paper factory being built. Truck farming -has gained a new impetus and the rice interest is on a big boom. ' Land in and adjacent to the city, which a few years ago was ly ing in waste, has been utilized and a large number of handsome stores and comfortable dwellings have been erec ted. The improvements on the sounds are due to the improved condition of the city. Hotels and boarding houses nave been estaDiisnea on wnghtsville and a company is now forming who propose to build a railroad to the Sound, "mere are now forty-one ves sels over one hundred tons burthen in 1 -port and fifty-four sailed for this port. At least one nunorea vessels, exclusive of steamers, have arrived and cleared this season and the. fleet of tug., boats have been kept busy. Besides the in creased number of vessels which have loaded here they are of a larger class and carry larger cargoes than vessels drawing 12 tons. It is not at all unusu al to see vessels of over 400 tons at our naval store yards, compresses and saw mills taking in loads twice the size of those carried over the bar five years ago. J! orty-two business enterprises have been established, which gives an aver age ot eight a year or one for every forty-hve days. The capital invested in establishing these branches of trade will amount to at least 8500,000. This does not include the money spent here in establishing the oil tank depot, for we have no means or ascertaining the amount, nor the telephone exchange, telephone fire alarm, pine straw pack ing establishment, money received from the trucking- and rice interest, nor the government appropriations tor the har uor ana river improvement, ana nsning interest, shipping of sturgeon, etc. The money expended in establishing these industries was taken out of banks, 1 J f 2 a j r 1 bonds, etc., and put into circulation. The money brought here and placed in circulation Irorn the sale ot pine- straw, rice, early vegetables, etc., amonnts to a good round sum, and is no doubt far in excess of the amounts received from similar sources during the first half of the past decade. A Political Seaeatien. The New York Herald's Washington special says there is seme quiet talk of a coalition between the Democrats and Greenbackers, in which the Democrats are to drop their party name and call themselves Greenbackers, and the ratter are to make the platform, while the converted Democrats may Tiave the mass of the offices. "Down with n a tional banks and check to the rule of corporations, is to be the new party cry, with which this coalition hopes to sweep the country next year, lireen backers say thatin the. West they have maintained their organization : that in the South they have shown themselves strong enough to give the Democrats trouble; that in JSew iork, 1'ennsyl- vania and the -East they control an im portant vote. Their proposition to the Democrats is this: "Abandon your Democratic name, . which is already odious,' join our Greenback orgamza lion, auu wiin tins cuauuun we can carry t&e nue next yea and Presidency in 1884. We Greenbackers will make the platform and you Demo crats may have the offices. What we, as the Greenback party, shall appeal to the people for is the repeal of the na tional bank law. the substitution of greenbacks for national bank notes, th reiital of State banking, and strict an rigorous dealing fitli oorparatid,: Orl that, if you' Democrats will join us and drop vour party name we can together sweep the country." The proposition, it is siid,: gets a great d&l of faVot.frbia the western and southern Democrats. A Corner in Ef Bal;imore Sun. The Raleigh Farmer and Mechanic' reminds us of the fact that "Col. Best- has now only five months in which' to build his railroads to Wolf -Greek and Waynesville. Seven months have been lost in 'negotiations.' We truly hope he may soon begin in earnest. We have a very warm interest in the completion of that railroad and more so than any other on the globe." It will be supplied with two fountains, etc, and will be neatly enclosed. Capt Barrow informs the Winston Sentinel that as soon as orders are re ceived to commence operations on the North Carolina Midland railroad, he can readily secure the services of over two hundred able-bodied laborers to put on at this point. The treasurer of the State has repeat edly decided that no municipal corpor ation in the State has any right to im pose a tax on drummers. It appears from articles in the papers that in some places in the State the law is openly violated, and drummers are made to pay a city tax. Twenty thousand Schoodie (land locked) salmon eggs were received at the Morganton fish-hatchery on the 24th inst., from Grand Lake Stream, Maine. They were forwarded in wet moss per express, and sustained a direet loss of only twenty-five eggs. Winston Sentinel: The erection of a paper mill at' this place is contemplated by gentlemen who have the capital. Paper, like cotton goods, is always in demand, with an increasing consump tion that insures sale. The Bobesonian says Capt. W.S. Nor ment will return to Lumberton to live, having formed a partnership with Col. French for the practice of law. Rev. R. M. Brows, of the North Car olina Conference, died very suddenly on Monday. He was on Uwharrie cir cuit. There is not at present a vacant dwelling house in the town of Salem. A Chicago Senvatlonal Suicide, A Sensational suicide was committed in a saloon iu Chicago, Tuesday , night. Joseph Stearrvv a 'workman in the Brunswick billiard fctory, entered the saloon and ordered a glass of beer. Taking it; to a table be drank it quietly, and then, drawing a short pocket-knife, he opened it and - ran ma thumb cooly along its , keen .edge, bat without caus ing any apprehension among the people in the saWon.
