Nearly One million Dollars In Sonde Carried Off A Quantity of Jewelry Stolen. New York Herald, 17th. One of the most startling and exten sive robberies that have ever occured in this city was perpetrated yesterday, under circumstances wnicn evidence al most unparalleled boldness and skill on the part of the thieves. In broad day light two or more men succeeded in en tering a large apartment; nouse tilled with people, on a populous street, evad ing the servants with which the house was supplied, and Drea&ing into tne apartments of one of the occupants car- rieu on Douua, ceruucaies ui block. uiu lewelry to the value of. nearly $1,000,- 0X). After completely ransacking the rooms in the absence of the occu pants, they escaped without detection with their valuable Dooty and leit abso lutely no trace behind them. Tne matter was reported to tne po lice authorities as soon as the gigantic theft was discovered, but it was not un til an early hour this morning that a Herald reporter was enabled to learn the circumstances' of the case, which the detectives have made every effort to conceal, for reasons best known to themselves. HOW THE KOBBERY WAS EFFECTED. Mr. Abram E. Simons, a stationer and printer, doing business at No. 62 J ohn street, resides with his wile in a suit of rooms on the second floor in the lartre apartment house at No. 177 East Seventy-second street. .Between 5 ando o'clock last evening Mr. Simons and his wife were absent from home for a short time. On their return they found that their rooms had been broken open and literally every article of furniture and every closet or other receptacle where valuables could have been con cealed, had been thoroughly ransacked. Jivery room was in contusion and tne floors were covered with the contents of the drawers of the bureaus and sec retaries. Mr. Simons had been print ing the bonds and stock certificates for some railroad company or companies, whose names have not been learned, and nearly $1,000,000 worth of these securities he had taken to his rooms for safe keeping and concealment They were unsigned by the proper offi cers, but it is said were otherwise com plete. Every one ot these bonds and certificates were taken, together with $2,000 worth of jewels and valuables belonging to Mr. and Mrs. Simons. AN INGENIOUS DEVICE. An investigation by the detectives, who were speedily summoned, satisfied them that the thieves had evidently en tered the house by tne basement doors and climbed into the enclosure wnere the dumb waiter runs. By means of this machine they had hoisted them selves up to the second floor, where thev had easily broken down the frail doors of the closet opening into Mr, Simon's kitchen from the lift or dumb waiter, which is used for sending coal, ashes, food, garbage, etc., to and from the cellar. Once in the apartment they seemed to know where to look for their booty, and had made the most of their time and escaped successiuuy Dy tne same way in which they had entered. The securities, as stated, were un siened. but if the thieves succeed in skilfully forging the necessary signa tures, they may be enabled to negotiate the stolen paper. LEASING THEIR BEAUTY. How Some Good LooKing- liirl iu New York Make a Living:. New York Correspondent Cincinnati Enquirer. Hundreds of girls thus turn their good looks to account in this city, not onlv in retail places but in the whole sale departments of the largest houses, A cloak will sen iar quicKer wnen ais played on the form ot an enchanting live figure than when a dumb thing or wire and cotton, with a pasteboard iace is inside of it. This may be a mild prostitution of female beauty, but it has the countenance or tne best nrms in several lines of business. The in mates of a nasha s harem are not more carefully chosen than are these mer cantile models. They must not only possess fineforms and faces, but a grace ful carriage ana pome manners are also reauired. f or a lady-like aspect is as beautv for this purpose. The wages are never less than the same person could earn with the needle, and usually more, One particular blonde, with the sweet face of a Marguerite, and the tall, wil lowy, long-legged form of the gentle maidens in water color pictures, is said to receive $40 a week in a Murray Hil robe and cloak concern. Anything and everything looks well on her; no style or garments is unbecoming, ana sne has the deportment of an ideal princess, She is the daughter of a German beer salooner in Avenue B. At sixteen she applied for work in this concern. Her suitableness for a model was seen at a glance, and she was engaged at $5 a week. Her pay has oeen irequentiy raised. in consequence of enticements from rival shops, until in has reached a hizher figure than is paid to any other emDlovee. She is now twenty. She is considered wortu more tnan ner cose, because foolish buyers, seeing her at tractiveness in a garment, fondly imag ine its possession would somehow make them look the same, sue is a good gir and saves her money. The same can not be said of all who are similarly ex posed to flattery and temptation. Some of them get vain and giddy with the conciousness of their beauty, and desire to own such finery as they wear. Then comes disgrace and a plunge down ward. In the millinery and hair stores the requirements in a model particu larly concern the head, and severa stores contain wonderful exhibitions of facial loveliness of various types. In one millinary concern this feature of the business has been thoroughly elab orated and svstematized. it a brunette customer appears a brunette girl waits on her. so that she may see the colors in conjunction with a complexion like her own. Blonde girls, in turn, attend to blonde shoppers. For showing dresses, shapeliness of bust and waist is the chief requisite. At the time of closing a certain millinery store in 14th Street, the scene at the door is like that at the rear or a tneatre during tne run of a ballot spectacle, by reason of the fellows waiting to escort the girls home.
