Thellate Sen ator Carpenter was buried this after noon at f orest Home uemetery, near Milwaukee. The funeral pageant sur passed any former burial in Wisconsin. JN ot only did the entire population of the city assemble to pay a last tribute to the deceased, but almost every locality in the estate was represented by its most prominent citizens. During the rorenoon, wmia the remains lay m the Court House, the throng of visitors was so great that all could not gain ad mittance, and when the hour of 2 oclock arrived and the doors were closed a thousand were yet waiting their turn. The funeral cortege start ed from the Court House at 2.15 P. M., with a column composed as follows : Marshal and aids, band, Sheridan Guard, South Side Rifles, Milwaukee Cadets, uniformed, Patriarchal Circle, Knights of St. Patrick, and other uni formed organizations ; the remains and guard of honor, consisting of the Mil waukee Light Horse Squadron, clergy and physieians, family of the deceaseq, Congressional committee, State execu tive and judical officers, State Legisla ture, Bar Association, civil and milita ry officers of the United States, city and county officers, Chamber of Commerce, Merchants' Association and citizens. The column extended about one mile in length, besidrs an almost intermina ble line of p-iv .te carriages. At the grave the ceremony was brief, consis ting merelvof the readins of the ritual Of the Episcopal Church by the Key Dr. Ashley. The circular of the Mercantile Agen cy of R. D. Dun & Co. shows the num ber of failures in the United States during the first three months of 1881 to be 1,761, with liabilities amounting to $24,447,250, against 1,432 failures and $12,777,074 liabilities same time in 1880, and 2,524 failures and $43,112,665 liabili ties same time in 1879. The increase this year is. attributed partly to the se vere weather in the Western and Nerthern States, and the unfavorable condition jn the Southern States, and the attending hindrance to business and agricultural operations.
