ITIaitiked Men Take st Prisoner from a Conktable and Haag Her for Sua- pectedArabn. Dispatsh-to New York Herald. Chabxest6n, S. April 14.A 2es patcb,to the Kews and Courier gives the particulars f the lynching of Judy Metts, a colored woman,-at Martin's Depot, Laurens county, on the 9th inst. It states tha on Sunday night, the 3rd inst., the barn of Mr. J. S. Blalock, at Martin's Depot, was set -on fire and burned. The barn was near the dwell ing house, so near thatr the inference was that it was the purpose of the incendiary- -to ?buxn the- dwelling, also. Mr. ilalock made investigations which satisfied him that the incendiary was a negro woman named Judy Metts, liv ing on his place. On iSaturday, the 9th insU he went to Trial Justice N. S. Harris, at Clinton, and swore out a war rant against the woman. 'The trial justice placed the warrant in the hands of Constable Samuel Gary, who arrest ed Judy Metts about eight, o'clock on Saturday, night and started with her to Clinton. Two miles above Martin's Depot and opposite Mr. H. M. Hunter's a party of men on horseback ; overtook the constable1 and his prisoner. - The party were disguised, having cloth over their faces, with eyeholes to see through. Some of the party took charge of the constable and others took the prisoner, and they carried them off in different directions. The constable says that he was kept about an hour and was then told. to. "git," which he accordingly did "without, delay, going to Clinton. t . : ; JUDY HANGED. ' ' , j The woman: wa&. found tlier next morning about two hundred yards from where the lynchers ytook her, hanging by the neck taA tree about twenty feet from the ground. She was cut down on Sunday. The .coroner's inquest on Monday returned a verdict .that she came to her death .by hanging at the hands. of persons unknown to the jury. She was buried ott Monday by the col ored people. Nothing has been done, so far as I have heard, to discover the lynchers. The 'woman leaves' a hus band and children. The same woman was accused two years ago of burning the dwelling house of a Mr. Simpson, but she was never tried for it. Virginia ( Politic VTickham Won't Mix. The Washington correspondent of the Baltimore Sun writes : Friends of Gen. Wickham, the leader of the Republican party of Virginia, and chairman of the State committee, say that under no circumstances will be and other prominent Republicans abandon their separate and indepen dent organization, even in the event that the executive department of the government should follow the example or tne senate KepuDncans ana ma&e an alliance with the repudiating element They will run a straightout debt-paying Republican ticket in any event. It is said that Gen. Wickham and other leading Virginia Republicans contem plate issuing an address to the Republi cans of the United States, showing up the bargain made hy the Republicans ot the Senate, and exposing the insin cerity and untruthfulness of the alleg ed reasons for the condition, so far as they affect the pretense of "free ballot ana honest count in Virginia, it is to be hoped that Gen. Wickham will adopt this course. A Charlie Row In England. Col. John W. Forney, of Philadel phia, has just received letters from two gentlemen in England, the first, of whom writes to say that he believes he has found Charlie Koss, while tne sec ond, who is well known to Col. Forney, vouches for the reliability of the wri ter, and joins in the expression of the belief that the lost son of Christian K Ross ha3 been found in England. The boy is in the villiage of Loughton, a suburb twelve miles distant from the city of .London. A woman who has him n charge passes him off as her son George, but the boy says his name is not George but Charlie Ross; that the woman is not his mother, and that he was brought trom America m a big ship. The mat ter will be thoroughly investigated. Verdict for the Woman. Baltimore Sun. Ellicott City, Md., April 14. Ar gument in the suit of Miss Mary A. Murray against Gen. E. B. Tyler, post master of Baltimere, claiming $20,000 damages for assault, closed in the Cir cuit Court for Howard county, Judge Hammond on the bench, at 12.40 o'clock p. m to-day. The case was then given to the jury, who, after remaining out about three hours, rendered a verdict for the plaintiff, with damages of $5,000. Counsel for the defense filed a motion for a new trial, and if this is refused will, it is stated,' take the case before the Court of Appeals. This trial lasted six days. A. T. Stewart's Body. The body of Mr. A. T. Stewart ha?. according to the New York Sun'ot Wednesday, been found and deposited bv the mourners between two enor mous blocks of masonry in the crypt of the Cathedral at Garden City, secured with ponderous bolts and imbedded in cement, lest the wide-awake resurrec tionist should again appropriate it to his own nefarious purposes. Judge Hil ton declined to be interviewed in regard to the matter. Fratricide in North Carolina. Adam Bass, colored, employed by the Willmington and Weldon Railroad as a section hand at Magnolia, N. C, was instantly killed by his brother, Handley Bass, with a razor, his throat being cut from ear to ear. Cause, jealousy and whiskey. Handley has fled, and is pur sued by a party of armed men, who will doubtless bring mm to justice. Let's Hare More A boot This. Raleigh News and Observer. The Ontlook for the Vein mountain . c i 1 -Oold mining: Covnpanyt Marlon Lamp Post The hv4Htiliq jnpes for 'the Vein Mountain gold mines arrived at this de pot Saturday, and will be immediately conveyed to the mine when, as soon as they are In j&lace, the "com pany wftl be gin operations for separating the gold from the gravel. While running the ditches tqr conduct the water, many rich veins'' of auriferous gravel 'were cut through, showing a v much larger extent of gojd bearing territory than had at first been anticipated. That it will take years to exhaust the deposits of this valuable and extensive property is no longer a question of doubt, and that, from the numerous quartz veins feeding the gulches, it is evident the company will soon find it profitable to run a stamp mill. The lower part of this property, hear the river rna "what is known as the first, bench, has been worked with wonderful profit by the natives, but from ,want of water sup ply, they could hot work; to any extent, although tney found itj profitable to wheelbarrow. the griveLljP ttio water. The present company have, at great ex pense, succeeded in conducting the wa ter of "Broad river to the top of the gulches, attaining an altitude of about 200 feet, which enables them to work the whole surface from the head of the gulches down to the river, a dis tance of more than a mile. The com pany do not anticipate commencing work on their richest deposits ; , but from the richness of the mines, as al ready tested, down on the first bench, it is thought that any of the numerous gulches will, on their second and third. benches, yield beyond the most san guine calculations of the fortunate proprietors, some of whom are expect ed down shortly. Mr. Chas. Chr. Gran, No. 2 Tates ave. and cor. Graham ave. and Cook street, Breoklyn, N. T., says: With great pleasure I Inform yen that the Great German Remedy, St Jacob's OU, has been used by some of my friends' and acquaintances in severe cases of rheumatism, neuralgia, lumbago, and various accidents. It relieves pain and heals almost like magic; and I never knew or heard of, in my experience of many years, a remedy upon which such enthusiastic praise has been bestowed and which has had such an immense sale as the St Jacob's Oil. I put such confidence in the healing power of this family remedy, that I reemmend it for the various ailments which It is designed to cure, and always find that it is followed with the most wonderful results. The demand for the St. Jacob's Oil, In both of my drug stores, exceeds that for all other similar remedies combined.
