Ammonia and WaUr,
WashingtosC Ajpril 15.- Tiber is at
the navy yard here an apparatus known
as the Ganigee ice machine. In fact, it
has.txo distinct name as yet,but when it
shall be completed some three months
hence, it.will be known as ' a Zero-Motor.
The machine has excited great in
terest among various persons, butPn
fessor Gamgee has only exhibited it in
motion opresident GarnlelaV gecreta
rieaHnhtarJdl Wlndorn and a few prom
inent offlciaiy'l tx J 2
Tfieirtmary Idea of the inventor was
to secure a machine for the economical
manifeJfo&Mltje, aiidlhQ fcp.ifsXusted
a cQinpoundrammoniacal . engine, to
which was attached a steam engine of
peculiar construction and an ammo
niacal pump, all three of which are con
nected oy the same shaft. The affair
represents a large turning lathe mount
ed on iron boxes, the latter servin g as
boilers or generators. ; The fuel consists
of gaseous ammonia, generated from
liquid ammonia by the heat in hydrant
water of ordinary atmospheric temper
ature. So far as making ice is concern
ed the apparatus has proven a success.
While-mating these experiments Prof.
Gamgee discovered that in his com
pound ammonia engine he could gen
erate a great, power,, and, without any
trouble it could be controlled so as to
be used for driving machinery. There
fore he has determined to cut off the
steam attachment, and will make im
provements by which he hop's in the
near futur to revolutionize the entire
motive power of the world and dis
pense;with steam, r s
Chief Engineer .Isherwood, of the
Navv Department, was detailed to in
vestigate tha machine, and he made a
Teport to Secretary Hunt, In which he
stated tbat,the,scfieme had an entirely
practical look about it. and be doubted
not but that if but a short time should
be allowed Gamgee he would produce,
motor capable qi furnishing power
without, the combustion of coal. It
was f or this reason,-and with a view to
securing to the government the use of
a motor of this sort.that the President
interested himself in it. .
Prof essox Gamgee exhibited bis draw
ings and explained ll the details, and
when the President, with critical and
mechanical eye, desired 'to know the
use of some mysterious looking tubes,
which extended about the engine, it
was shown that they carried water to
the joints and bearings, the aqueous

explanation of the details would be
bewildering and is therefore unneces
sary. The only ingredients for gener
ating the gas were liquid ammonia and
pure water from a hydrant near the
machine shop. In a short time the
pipes were covered with hoar frost,
which accumulated in great quantities.
The power of the vapor could be dis
tinctly felt when one placed his hand
near a gauge which was suddenly
opened. A small volume shot out, so
cold as to send a chill over the whole
body by mere contact with the hand,
and of sueh force as to knock it from
in front of the cloud.
No attempt has been made as yet to
utilize the power for motive purposes,
but the inventor asserts that he will be
able to run steamships and cars and
machinery without the use of coal, and
that the day for boilers is fast ap
proaching an end.
When Keeley first started, it was

forty-four horse-power, requires the
services of one man, some hydrant wa
ter and a small quantity of ammonia.
Gamgee has been at work only a few
years, and has expended but a small
amount of money.
The power of expansion and contrac
tion possessed by ammonia has already
been applied by the aid of othej me
chanism than Professor Gamgee's to
the running, of light machinery, but
whether it is a practical motor in ac
tual use or not is a matter for future
experiment.

The Plan Onat are Being' Laid In
Washington.
Delegations of Hepublicans from Vir-
gnia ana ioriaa were at tne White
ouse to-day. The Florida Republi
cans talked in a very pretty strain to
the President on-the fine prospect of
rescuing Florida from the hands of the
"Bourbon" Democracy,-which accord
ing to their ideas could be made cer
tain and sure if the President would
only give the offices to them individu
ally. The resident maae trie usual
stereotyped answer, that he would con
sider what they said. The Virginia
delegation was headed' by Representa
tive Jorgenson. These gentlemen spoke
generally in behalf f the regular Re-
puuucan party m v ugiuia, ap
pealed to uie rresiaeni in earnest ana
eloquent language not to cripple his
own party Dy giving any am or eounte
nancfl to the reoudiation faction of
Manone and RiddJegerber. The Presi
dent was informed that the Republi
cans of Virginia had always made a
gallant fight tinder the banner of Re
publican principles,' and that those
principles were not the principles of
the repudiationists. An alliance with
manone, instead or oentmbung lu xxtj
publicaa party,-would materially em
barrass it and give it a set back which
it would take many years to recover
from. The President listened atten
tively, but refrained from any decided
expression of opinion, except as to his
hope that the cause of Republicanism
in the South would increase. He said
that all that had been said interested
him and would receive the fullest con
sideration, as he regarded the whole
subject as of great importance.
An Agricultural Building Cheap.
Raleigh News and Observer, 17ht.
Yesterday the .National Hotel was
purchased by the State of North Caro
lina, the sum paid being $13,000. Fab
H. Busbee, Esq., represented the State
in the transaction. The action of the
executive committee bf the Board of
Agriculture was eminently prudent
and economical. For less than half
the cost of the ground and buildings,
and much less than they could possibly
have erected a suitable building (even
with the aid of convict labor), they
have secured permanent quarters for
the commissioners, the geologist and
the museum, and for the laboratory of
the chemist, Dr. Dabney, who will, we
learn, shortly remove to this city.
There will be, besides, ample room
for the accommodation of the Supreme
Court, and probably the State library,
whenever it shall be deemed advisable
to transfer them from their present
cramped quarters in the capitol. By
such transfer the Secretary of State
and the Auditor will be enabled to ar
range and care for their important re
cords in a more satisfactory manner
than is now possible in their single
ooms. The hotel building will afford
besides, rooms for the committees of
the General Assembly, and the grounds
are the proper place for the erection of
necessary buildings which would dis
figure the capitol square, and for the
storage of wood and coal.
The executive committee, uovernor
Jarvis, and Messrs. Battle and Holt,
demonstrated their excellent business
capacity by their prompt action in this
purcnase. ine opportunity ior sucn a
bargain does not often occur, and
should not be missed. We congratu
late the Board of Agriculture and the
State of North Carolina upon the pur
chase. Tit for Tat.
