Mrs. Garfield, who speaks French aud German fluently, is said to be the first President's wife able to talk with foreign diplomats in the , court lan guage of Europe. The wife of Secretary Windom is the daughter of a Congregational clergy man in Massachusetts: In her vouth she was a teacher in Ohio, and she now teaches her own children. Mrs. Mary liBlfel, oi Columbus Ohio, has given $10,000 tolfenyott College for the erection of a new halMn the Col lege Park, to be called Hubbard Hall, in memory of her dead brother, George Hubbard. Thirty days after a Michigan man got a divorce from his wife to marry one with a handsomer face the divor ced woman fell heir to $287,000. You bet that ex-husband feels like a man with the jumping toothache. A soft voice in woman alwavs eroes- with a gentle spirit. A gentleman, sit ting in a friend's parlor engaged in con versation with him, was startled by a noise down stairs, and paused to ask : "What's that a crash of crockery?" "No ; that's my wife calling to me." A woman will work a month to if ab ricate a delicate protection for a chair and then when it is in place an edict is promptly issued forbidding any man sitting in that chair, through fear of spoiling the tidy. It s the best chair protector that possibly could be jlesir ed. She was talking on the cars, and she said : "The meanest people are those who peep out of windows to see what their neighbors are doing. Now, this morning i was looking through the blinds of my window, and what do you suppose I saw that mean Mrs Jones doing t Why, she was peeping through her blinds to see if I saw her the mean woman !" A very ugly woman of Laeven worth obtained a very handsome man for a husband ; but her success was not a source of happiness. She repeatedly heard people s expressions of wonder that so attractive a mau had married so unattractive a woman, and finally be came furious by angry.throwing crock ery and furniture at his fine head, and eventually giving him legal grounds for divorce. Of all the love affairs in the world, none can surpass the true love of a big boy for his mother. It is a love noble and honorable in the highest degree to both. I do not mean merely dutiful affection. I mean a love which makes a boy gallant and courteous to his mother, saying to everybody plainly that he is fairly in love with her. Next to the love of her husband, nothing so crowns awoman'slife with honor as this second love, this devotion of the son to her. And I never yet knew a boy to "turn out" bad who began by falling in love witn his mother. the Atrium. '. Mr. McGeoch is not only still ia the deal, but will continue there prob ably through May. It was reported to day that McGeoch had already begun to look the ground over with a view to a big wheat deal in July. His recent successful operations have placed him in the very front rank of the great mar ket manipulators of the country, and he is in danger of becoming more fa mous than Jim Keene was a year ago. Facta About ITorth Carolina, Wilmington Star. We have published the fact already, but it will bear repeating, this time edi torially. North Carolina makes a bet ter average to the acre than any South ern State in the production of cotton. Now remember that Then again re member this fact: that North Carolina raises the finest tobacco in America, se cures the highest prices and gets less credit abroad than any other State in the Union. Nort Carolina makes more money to the acre, or to the mule, or to the hand in tobacco-raising than any other State. . Be sure -to remember that. North Carolina makes more rice of a first-rate quality to the acre than any other State. Facts are facts, and the above are facts. T w INDORSED BY PHYSICIANS, CLERGYMEN, AND THE AFFLICTED EVERYWHERE. New York Herald. A bill which has just been introduc ed in the Massachusetts Legislature looking to a regulation of the liquor tratnc is an exception to the crude and ill-conceived measures proposed in per haps a majority of the States. The bill in question provides that before a sa loon is opened for the sale of liquor the consent of a majority of the property owners in the vicinity snail he obtain ed. Under the present system in that State the possession of a license practi cally confers the right to set up an es tablishment of this kind anywhere, and there can be no question that in a. great many cases private property is thereby materially injured. A liquor saloon partakes of the character of a nuisance in most places ; m the immediate vi cinity of private residences it is a posi tive one. Such a law in this city would, be a great protection to property own-: ers who are now completely at the mercy of the licensing authorities. While in some instances a statute of this character might pactically amount in its operation to a sort of local prohi bition the rights of property in a: con flict of -the kind should not be com pletely ignored, The-, present law dis criminates entirely in favor, of outclass the liquor deaiers-rand'- aginst'tfte o wners of. property. an Outlaw J?a ylnff ft5000. t .Turn Loone.
