And hew of his will and pleasure, All Ann In urn a nhwun fu Were doomed to the quenchless burnlna. &uu uciu iu uio itoj tiiereto. Yet never by faith's vnreason A satntller soul was tried, -And never the harsh old lesson A tenderer heart belled. f And after the painful service On that pleasant Sabbath day, He walked with his little daughter. Through the apple bloom of May. Sweet In the fresh green meadows, Sparrow and blackbird song: Above him their tinted petals The blossoming orchards hong. Around on the wonderful glory, The minister looked and smiled: "How good Is the Lord who gives us These gifts from his hand, my child." "Behold In the bloom f apples And the violets isrthe sward A hint of the old lost beauty . r Of the garden of the Lord." - Then op spake the little maiden, Treading on snow and pink, , "Ob, father; these pretty blossoms Are very wicked, 1 think. "Had there been no Garden of Eden, There never had been a fall, And If never a tree had blossomed God would have loved us aU." "Hush, chad," the father answered, "By his decree man fell, His ways are in clouds and darkness, But he doeth aU things well. "And whether by his ordaining To us cometh good or 111, Joy or pain, tbe light or shadow, We must fear and love Him still." "O, I fear Him." said the daughter, "And I try to love Him, too, But I wish he was good and gentle, Kind and loving as you." The minister groaned In spirit, As the tremulous lips of pain, And wide wet eyes uplifted, Questioned his own in vain. Bowing his head he pondered The words ot the little one; Had he erred in his life-long teaching, Had he wrong to his master done ? To what grim and dreadful idol Had he lent the holiest name? Did his own heart, loving and human, The God of his worship shame? And, lo! from the bloom and greenness From the tender skies above, And the face of his little daughter He read a lesson of love. No more as the cleudy terror Of Sinai's mount of law. But as Christ in the Syrian lilies The vision of God he saw. And as whenMn the clefts of Horeb, Of old was his nresence known, The dread ineffable gloty Was Infinite goodness alone. Thereafter his hearers noted In his prayers a tender strain, And never tbe gospel of hatred Burned on his lips again. And the scoffing tongue was prayerful, And the blinded eyes found sight, And hearts, as flint aforetime, Grew soft in his warmth and light. PHILADELPHIA REFOnM. inayor Kinsr Tells a Delegation of Temperance lTIeii that He will En force tbe Sunday Law. . a delegation ot nity Dusiness men who favor the enforcement of the Sun day liquor law presented a petition to Mayor ung yesterday, asking him to have the saloons closed on the Sabbath The delegation was composed of such well-known gentlemen as L. Love, j.x. jeieia ana I'ninp j. uarrett made brief speeches on the same subject, and a petition with 4.000 signers who be lieve it best to close the drinking places on sunaay was exnioitea. Mayor King in reply said : "The May or is simply an executive officer or over- Beer tor tne enforcement of the law He will, however, enforce all the laws he finds upon the statute books, this one in regard to the Sunday liquor traf- nc among otners. Tnere is no law vio lated with more impunity than this one. I caanot but be sensible of it. The dai ly papers convey it in such characters that he who runs may read. The large and intelligent gathering of gentlemen who are gathered here, the large num Deror gentlemen connected with the press show the great interest that is taken in this movement must be push ed as much as by any other means. 1 will do all in my power to aid you. I will enforce the law. There are no of ficers here now who are kept here for political duties ; they are simply kept here to perform their duty in maintain ing the law. I have been in office now, I think, but two Sabbaths. I gave or ders to the Chief of Police to have the law strictly enforced on Sundays, and here ports to me that he has done so ; that he himself superintended the work and visited a great many locali ties and found the saloons closed. I mean to continue the work. I teU you, gentlemen, . I shall hot allomlhis matter to pass unnoticed. I shall eoa tinue tcthe oest of my ability to en force the law. .My.offieers must;not enter a saloon except to preserve the peace, but the saloon's must be closed on Sunday. A Duel In Clarendon, S. c. Clarendon Enterprise. One evening last week our communi ty was startled by the intelligence that a duel had been fought within the very limits of the town. Upon inquiry.it was ascertained that Messrs Flowers and Allsbrooks had some differences. Two friends learned this and, deter mining to have some fun at their ex pense, persauded the latter to send a challenge to the other for mortal combat. The challenge was accepted, these two youne srentlemen managing 10 insinuate tnemseives in the position of seconds. All preliminaries having been arranged, the balls were extracted from some pistol catndges and black ened cork substituted ; with these the pistols - were loaded. The appointed time brought all parties on the field of combat. At the word "hre one pistol went on, uoing no uauiage, or course . i. i Mr. iowers- snappea. Alter some consultation, the seconds decided that Mr, Flowers should have a second shot. Whereupon he raised the pistol above his head, with the magnanimity of a truly brave man, and, with the w&rds 'nere goes, again snapped his pistol. The question was put to each: "Are you satisfied V" This having been an swered in tne amrmative, one of the seconds gave the somewhat arbitrary oraer : -.aavance Hair-way ana shafce nanas. xmpiicib oueaience was ren dered. The whole affair was extreme ly farcical. Mr. Allsbrooks knew that it was only a jokb, but Mr. Flowers did not suspect the fact.
