The juveniles will be assisted to night by the "0. 13. Club," who appear in costume. Capt. F. A. McNinch's face where he was bitten by Wm. Horah is almost healed up. Only the skin was torn. Mr. Ab. Elliott made the second exhibit to The Observer of fine gar den strawberries yesterday. The Cowpens celebration wound up last night with a, ball, which was piven at the Merchants' Hotel, in Spar tanburg. A meeting of the young men will be held in the armory of the Hornets' Nest Riflemen, at 8 o clock to-night, for the purpose of forming a gun club. All interested are invited to attend. The deportment and soldierly car riage of the Carolina Military Institute cadets at Spartanburg, day before yes terday, was favorably commented upon on all hands. Mr. George Finch, of Jhis city, has been appointed agent for the sale of Hon. Jeff. Davis's book in the counties of Lincoln, Cleaveland, Catawba and 13urke. Mr. Henry Williams, formerly of this city, who has been stjrving as city cotton weigher in Salisbury during the last season, has been re-elected for an other year by the Salisbury board of al dermen. We acknowledge the receipt of an invitation to a ball, to be given at the Grand Central Hotel, in Durham, N. C, on the evening of May 20th, in honor of the new county of Durham. Mr. W. W. McDiarmid, editor of the Lumberton Robesonian, shed upon us the light of his genial countenance yesterday. He is one of those clever bellows we are always glad to meet. Dr. Theodore Whitfield will deliver an address before the Preacher's Asso ciation in the Second Presbyterian church to-night. The Methodist church bell will ring for the service. It is rumored that a change in the schedule of trains on the Richmond & Danville, Air-Line, and Charlotte, Co lumbia & Augusta railroads, will take place on the 15th inst. Posters have been put up in the city inviting recruits for the service of Uncle Sam. Twenty-three dollars a month is the compensation offered privates with an open field for promo tion, i Judge Wm. M. Shipp returned home yesterday morning for a few days of rest from his judicial labors. He will resume his circuit at Newbern, Mon day, aud will hold a three weeks' ses sion there. The Mutual Building and Loan Association has succeeded so well that the organization of another asso ciation is now talked of. A number of shares have been spoken for already, it is understood. The Young Men's Christian Asso ciation has decided to hold their Sab bath evening meetiags in the different churches of the city during the sum mer months, commencing on next Sun day evening at the First Presbyterian church. The committee of arrangements for the 20th of May met yesterday even ing and prepared a programme. The speaker and chief marshal for the occa sion were selected and invited to serve. The programme will be published Sun--day morning. The board of medical examiners of the State of North Carolina, will meet in Asheville, on Monday, May 30th. Without a license from this board, it id understood, no physician can collect fees by law, who commenced practic ing in this State after the 15th of April, Mil). -The register of. deeds is in receipt of the new public school law, passed by the Legislature at the last session, for -distribution among county school com , mitteeniei , and others interested. It i rjxe3tii-paVaf- the county superinten dent of public sckools at $3 per day for every day he is engaged in the perform ance of actual serviee. It has been about four months sins the Charlotte graded school case was argued in the supreme Court and fctill no decision has been rendered by the justices, It is daily becoming of more importance that the decision should be known, as the city tax col lector is ready to make out his books, and he is ignorant under the present status how much to apportion, A tew days after the municipal elections held on the first Monday in May, The Observer said the election at Matthews' Station had been carried by the "dry" ticket. We have since learned that the question of prohibi tion did not enter into the contest, and that D.M. Fesperman, who was spoken of as the "wet candidate, by inference, is one of- the leading prohibitionists in Providence township. We take pleas ure in making the amende honorable. Standing; Committees. , The mayor has appointed the follow ing standing committees in the new board of aldermen to overlook the af fairs of the several deoartments under the supervision of the city government ior two years next ensuing: Street Committee--R, M. Dodge, manager ef the tel ephone exchange of this city, last Mon day evening appeared before a meet ing of the fire department and presented the subject of the adoption of a telephonic fire alarm for the city, giving a detailed account of its work ings, and its estimated cost. The de partment, it is said, fully endorsed the views of Mr. Dodge, and the result was the appointment of a committee of fire men to present the matter to the board of aldermen for its consideration. The board meets Monday evening, and there can be but little doubt that action will be taken on the matter. The exchange has recently added six new names to the list of subscribers, and In proportion as the number in creases the mutual benefit to be derived from the telephone will also increase. At the Rehearsal. The Pirates of Penzance was re hearsed in the opera house for the first time last night. The cast entire, when grouped together on the stage, makes an imposing one. The young lady cho rus is especially fine, and their vivacity and aptness for the stage-play is some thing remarkable. For a piece of nat ural acting, tbeir start when Frede rick catches them with one shoe off, excels anything in a professional way, probably, ever seen, and will alone be worth the price of tickets. Their shrieks, also, when seized by the pi rates, is very effective, though the lady manager says they really look too glad to properly carry out the illusion in this part. The gingerly manner in which the pirates seize them should be overcome, as it probably will be by a little practice. But seriously, the Pirates will be a grand success. The leading characters haye been wisely cast, both male and female, and the beautiful music of the opera, which is better appreciated the oftener it is heard, will not suffer in their hands. Kmignts TcDiplarOrganizatiuu of a State Grand Commaudery. By authority of a warrant from M.E. Grand Master Benjamin Dean, of Bos ton, Mass., a meeting of the Knights Templar was called to organize a State Grand Commandery in Wilmington last Tuesday night. The Sla) says: The meeting being almost prelimin ary very little business was transacted besides the election of officers for the ensuing term, which was as follows: Right Eminent Grand Commander H. II. Munson, of Wilmington. V. E. Deputy Grand Commander Lee W. Battle, of Durham. E. Grand Generalissimo George II. King, of -Charlotte. E. Grand Captain-General S. S. Eve rett, of Wilmington. E. Grand Treasurer William Simp son, of Raleigh. E. Grand Recorder J. . Munds, of Wilmington. - -'- The Monumental ; Association Iteor ganized Tho Ladies to give a Ba zaar. Tho meeting of the Ladies Monu mental Association in the parlor of the Central Hotel day before yesterday was fully attended and proved a very en thusiastic one. Mrs. Judge Osborne, tho president of the association, tendered her resig nation, and the resignations of the other officers, and the association was reorganized by the election of the following officers: ; President, Mrs. Robert Gibbon ; Vice Presidents, Mrs. Theo. Whitfield; Mrs. J. W. Wadsworth, Mrs. S. Witt kowsky, Mrs. II. O Jones, Mrs. J. L. Chambers, Mrs. John G. Young, Mr3. S. M. Howell; Secretary Mrs. Jno. Wilkes; Treasurer, Mrs. II. Watts. Methods for raising funds were then discussed, and it was resolved to have a bazaar on Thursday and Fri day nights, May 2Gtli and 27th for this purpose. A resolution was also adopted that each member should endeavor to inter est the ladies of Mtcklenburg in this cause of sacred memory, and to solicit their sympathy, aud co-operation by the organization of similar associations in the several townships in the county, for the purpose of raising for the ac complishment say the ladies, "of this cherished though long-deferred hope that pleads in silent eloquence from the green mounds of our heroes fur this tribute from their grateful country women." The meeting then adjourned to be called at the discretion of the presi dent through The Obsekvef. Some Tliingv That are Not and Some Thai are True of the Cowpeni Cele bration The reports which unaccountably reached this city day before yesterday, representing tnat tue cowpens ceiebra tion was marked with considerable disorder, were not merely exagerated, but were entirely without foundation. The contrary of this was really the case. The occasion was remarsaoiy free from any feature of rowdyism tor such a eathenng. The soldiers in par ticular seemed to pride themselves up on their good behavior, and not a single intoxicated man in uniform was seen during the day. And as to their storming the bar-rooms taxing the wnisKey ana telling the owners to charge it to the centennial, this i3 rank perversion of the truth. The fact is. Borne or the Dar keepers raised drinks to 15 cents and continued to take in the money as fast as thev could deal it out without much regard as to whether they gave the usual measure or not. Tnese in com mon with the hotel keepers seemed to think !hf ir "fortune- was at the Hood and they would be liable to being ac counted simple if they - did not nassivelv -float with the tide that is to say they greedily pocketed all 4,' the ' money tnat came ; in their war ; andrt did not yseem to care whether the depositors a received tar equivalent or not. On the tables at the hotels, barbecued beef and pork were the principal dishes, cold water and dry break making up the rest, and these continued to circulate unreplenished from breakfast to dinner, and from dinner to supper, until they were picked bare to the bones. It is moderately es timated that one hotel during the day took in $1,500, with an actual gross ex penditure of less than $50. The waiters, beside, were green hands, utterly igno rant of the business. Complaint about these things was universal and the oc casion may not ultimately redound to the profit of the Spartanburg' hotelists. College Commencements. A joint stock comoany having bought these two contiguous properties to be known under the old title ot "Bockbrigde alum Springs," will open it to the public on June 1st, under the supervision of Mr. William Frazler, who was before the war, and for lour years after the war. In charge of the original alum springs. We think the public will find him the right man In the right place. J. FRED. EFFINGER, President Rockbridge Alum Springs Co. After twelve years' absence, I return to this post of duty. It is hardly necessary to dilate to the Southern public upon the virtues and value of this mineral water. It has Id the last half century made a record of cures In chronic diseases which for variety and aggravation of the cases brought under Its influence Is unapproached by any known mineral water In this country. The professional tesUmony to this effect is distinguished and unim peachable. But it Is of the preparations now being made by the new proprietors for the proper entertainment of the public I would say a few words. A great work of expurgation and renovation Is now going on at the old Alum Springs, Including a thorough system of drainage, a new and abun dant water supply of pure freestone from the mountain, repainting and new roofing, a very large introduction of new furniture, and in general a thorough overhauling of the entire premises. The elegance of the new "Jordan Alum," Its spacious and commodious "Grand Hotel" and cot tages, and the beauty of Its grounds, are widely known to the springs-going public. My aim and earnest effort shall be to keep this now combined establishment in a manner to give satisfaction to all reasonable guests. An excellent livery Is engaged, under a contract imposing a reasonable tarin 01 charges, au tne customary diversions are provided for, such as band and ball room music, bowling and billiards, and all that; but I do not "bank" much on these things. My main efforts shall be directed, with the aid of an efficient staff, to make the patrons of the place comfortable and "at home," and re gain, If possible, for this attractive summer resort its old popularity and prestige.
